Silent Stan, Stand Up And Speak Out

It’s been just over a week since Cesc Fabregas’ departure for Barcelona, and now this afternoon, we’ve been told that Samir Nasri is on the brink of securing a lucrative move to Manchester City.

Everyone knows what tomorrow’s headlines will include. The usual, apocalyptic-like phrases such as “meltdown“, “the end” and “it’s over” will smother the backpages of every tabloid in the country.

Some segments of the media will also start to intensify their demands for Wenger to be sacked.

There’s no doubt that portions of the media have always identified Arsene Wenger as the “problem” of Arsenal Football Club – despite being a man who has totally revolutionized the club to such a massive extent, since his arrival in 1996.

I appreciate things seem bad at the moment. We’ve lost multiple players this summer, and the squad is looking pretty bare, and with just over a week left of the transfer window, time is certainly running out.

Arsene Wenger is an incredibly intelligent man. You’d have to be an idiot to reject a statement like that.  But as mangers go, his footballing brain is second to none. Some will argue that his patient style of play is frustrating at times, but for me, the idea itself is the perfect way to play football.

With his admirable vision of how to run a football club, he was able to overcome the financial advantage possessed by Manchester United which had been created by thorough and heavy investment. Since the Premier League begun in 1992, he is one of few managers that has been able to prevent the total domination of Manchester United, by winning 3 Premier League titles.

Jose Mourinho has always been labelled as “the special one”, ever since his arrival at Stamford Bridge in 2004. However, I will always remain adamant that he wouldn’t have been able to succeed in English football, without relying on the vast millions he took from the pockets of Roman Abramovic.

Without the sudden influx of these ‘clueless sugar daddies’ who have come in and to an extent, have ruined football (I may be talking to the older generations here), Arsene Wenger would have gone on and won a lot more – in the right way as well.

He would have won leagues, rather than buying them – like Manchester City will soon do.

With our move from Highbury to The Emirates, a trophy drought was always inevitable. But even so, this so-called “devastating” trophy drought has put Wenger’s position in doubt for some people – much to the delight of certain bitter individuals in the global spotlight, who want him out so the Arsenal decline can begin.

Do I expect some people to call for Wenger’s head over the next few weeks? Yes, of course. They always have, and unless he creates another Invincibles side, they probably always will.

We cannot let the media and other forces to drive out the greatest manager we’ve ever had.

Seven years down the line, Arsene Wenger is still here. But is he still fully in control of the club, like he was in the days of The Invincibles?

Since 2004, multiple pivotal members including David Dein and the late Danny Fiszman are no longer in the boardroom. Alternatively, Stan Kroenke has come in, and currently stands as the majority shareholder of Arsenal Football Club.

Kroenke promised “to build on our rich heritage and take our club to new success” while also possessing the ambition to “run the club in a way which protects our long term future”.

Funnily enough, Silent Stan has said very little since.

Wenger has been attacked from every angle for his transfer dealings this summer, but yet, the man in charge of the club gets away scot-free.

In addition to that, the public relations department at Arsenal has been virtually non-existent.

Ivan Gazidis, as well as Stan Kroenke, are sitting together in a dark room, and are getting away with doing very little, while Arsene gets regular “attention” in the media spotlight, and is portrayed as some sort of criminal to Arsenal Football Club.

Would this happen if David Dein was still around, working closely with Arsene Wenger every day? Definitely not.

It’s got to the point that now, I’m completely fed up with the daily crucifixions that Arsene receives. He’s being completely left out to dry by the Board, who don’t want to take, or at least share, the blame.

Wenger does not run this club any more – not like he did when David Dein was around, when we were unstoppable.

Up until this summer, the club had always travelled out to the quiet Austrian town of Bad Waltersdorf for pre-season. But as soon as Stan Kroenke came in, the regular trip to Austria was immediately ruled out. A decision that has, and always will upset Arsene Wenger.

But Wenger, being the respectful man that he is, did not complain. When a new boss comes in, the last thing you do is immediately criticize his policies.

Arsene Wenger is (forced to be) loyal to Stan Kroenke. No matter how much respect Kroenke has for Wenger, he’s not going to give in to his demands, by sacrificing his own personal beliefs – even though those beliefs may include “doing sweet FA”.

It will be a very, very, very dark day for Arsenal Football Club, when Wenger calls it a day, for whatever reason.

As I was too young to properly experience George Graham at the helm, I can only admit that Wenger is the only manager that I’ve seen at Arsenal. But even then, in my opinion, there’s no doubt that he’s Arsenal’s best ever manager.

Wenger is an extremely honourable man. Unless he gets sacked, or is forced out, he will see off his contract.

If Stan Kroenke and the rest of the Board are sitting there perfectly happy, letting Arsene take the blame, no one can expect Wenger to come out and expose the Board in the public eye. As much as I’d like him to, he just wouldn’t do that.

Will David Dein return to Arsenal boardroom? I asked him at The Emirates Cup and he replied “I’m here every week”.

Dein still loves the club, but more importantly, he sees Wenger as a truly magnificent manager, which he still is. It would be great to see the pair working together again, building an even bigger and better club.

Despite his rather indirect response to me, of course, I would love if David Dein were to make a return to the executive side of Arsenal Football Club – although I do admit that the recent actions from his son does worry me a little.

The Board need to reassure the entire Arsenal community of what their intentions are – no matter how ambitious.

Silent Stan has invested a great deal into Arsenal Football Club, which makes it even more fascinating why he isn’t doing anything to push the club forward. Being the ambitious billionaire that he is, surely he wants to get a decent return at the end of the day?

I'm 20 and have been an Arsenal season ticket holder since 2006. My family has had Arsenal links since the 1920's, and the support is still going strong. I am at every home game, and also manage to get to multiple away games, when I can.

I have been writing for various blogs and websites since I was 15, but have now settled down and have become a regular writer for Arsenalinsider. I also run my own Pro Evolution Soccer blog, Only Pro Evolutions.

Arsenal is my passion. Writing is my passion. I was never good enough to play for The Arsenal, so I'll do the next best thing!

good points and a calm long term perspective that does not have the tunnel vision of the general hype. though I would disagree on one point; that Kroenke comes out. no reason to push up prizes now that the market is cooling down and emptying a bit from monopoly money. one can arague the purchase of Arshavin, but Wenger did save a lot on doing that after those clubs were out of the market for him

I’m not sure you can blame the board for Wenger’s bizarre trasnfer dealings this summer. Obviously there is money to spend, as the signings of Gervinho and Chamberlain have shown. But why is the money being invested in forward areas, when it’s patently obvious that our weaknesses lie in defense? He’s been given cash to spend, and he’s bought attackers – you can’t blame Kronke for that one!

I feel it’s too soon to judge right now - the next ten days are critical – but even so, from the position of an outsider looking in, our transfer policy this summer has seemed very peculiar indeed.

@mike Harvey – you my friend are a good man. One of the few bloggers who is actually looking at what is going on here. I cant believe the stinging criticism that Wenger is receiving from all corners including fans. He is the best manager Arsenal has ever had, will ever have and one of the greatest managers of all time.
What people cant see is the wage cap at arsenal will result in no top quality players signing for the club and until the board pull their finger out and sort this out, Arsene does not stand a chance in bringing any big players into the team.

You need to distinguish between ‘top players’ and money grabbing scumbags.  Man City are getting players by paying excessive wages.  Tevez wants to leave.  Toure would go back to Barca in a heartbeat.  If Valencia got back on track, Silva would return immediately.  It is the money that keeps them at City.

In a considerably less competitive league, we did a lot worse under
George Graham. Wenger’s never finished at less than fourth and been in
the European cup for 15 years in a row. Graham never had that consistency, and did Graham ever look like he could create an ‘Invincibles’
side??…sorry mate but your’re having a laugh. GG was a great manager for
Arsenal in a very different football world, but while his tight

The board have made their intentions known.  They and Wenger have both said publicly that money is available.  We needed a centre back and Wenger spent the money on Gervinho and Chamberlain.  Stop making excuses for his incompetence.  He can buy all the attacking midfielders in the world but we need a centre back and a proper centre forward.

Money has been spent, but in the wrong areas.  You can not blame the board for us not signing a centre back.

You might use the board to excuse his lack of ambition in the transfer market but what excuse do you have for our poor tactics.  We are naieve at the back and one dimensional in attack.

I can understand people not wanting to believe that Wenger, their hero, has run out of ideas.  I used to feel the same about George Graham.  I honestly believed that if he left the club would fall apart. Then, just when I thought Rioch was about to confirm my greatest fears, along came Arsene Wenger.  Just as Graham had run out of ideas, so has Wenger.

Stop making excuses for Wenger, there is no excuse for not signing a centre back, not drilling the defence and not having a plan B in attack.  In fact I’ll go a step further – if we do not sign Cahill, Samba or Mertesacker before the deadline he needs sacking!  The money was there, he spent it on Chamberlain.  Wenger himself identified improving the defence and adding height to the squad as a priority at the end of last season and has failed to do either!!!

I can’t disagree more. We’re negative (which I really hate) because we’re not stronge enough in the middle. We can’t play 4-4-2 at the moment because we’re not stronge enough. We played 4-4-2 when Flamini was at his last season because he was on fired and we played some of the best football in the world that year. The main reason is the stadium. The finanial criss really hit us hard. The sell of the Highbury real estate was no where near what we were hoped for. Hence the board are reluctant to spend big on both salary and transfer fee. So it all comes down to the youth program. We pay high wages for kids so they join us and we can later sell them on to make a profit, and occasionally we can promote some of the more talented player into the first team. Sounds great right? Wrong! Because we’re dealing with a bunch of stingy bastards (the board). The only look at the overall fincial figure. They see a huge wage bill so they don’t want to pay higher wage for star players. Hence we’re keep loosing important players.
When Dein was around, he fought with Wenger on all front. We were a bit more flexible then. Remeber how much we paid Henry for him to stay?
Don’t jump to conclusion so fast and lay everything on Wenger’s head. He doesn’t deserve that.
I can see how much we’ll miss him when he calls it a day.

The difference between stan and the Uzbek is simple stan wants to run a business and ensure it’s profitable but an Uzbek with billions doesn’t care.

Now in the last 5 years show me a club that has made a profit that won anything of note.

Football is not about profit it’s about winning. Barca -500 million united -800 real – about a trillion etc etc etc. German big team now all break even or profit win bugger all. Sadly arsenal are on their own as the must run as a business. Poor wenger is caught between a rock and a hard place.

When stan got effective control my hear heart sang as I knew arsenal were doomed trophy wise. All wenger salary cap rules and transfer policy is forced on the poor chap.

IF Alasair had won on he would have been able to put up some serious cash to capitalise the business/fun club. Just like Chelsea and man city are cleverly doing before fair play rules kick in. Man citeh pumping in 400 million so they can be clean(ish) by time fair play rules kick in.

But let’s face it, if united barca real and Chelsea fail fair play rules sep blatter will back track quicker than you can make a cup if tea.

So wenger the last true god and fair play person will be screwed…

Even if a billionaire pumped hundred of millions into the club, there’s still no guarantee of finishing above Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City.

Besides which, give Wenger £100 million to spend and he’d probably splash it all on completely unknown 17-year-old French wide-midfielders.

Sorry, but Gazidis just hands Wenger the money – he’s not the one who’s been wasting it all on ‘promising youngsters’ at the expense of the experience and leadership that we’re sorely lacking right now.

Gazidis isn’t the one who hired our incompetent medical staff.

Gazidis isn’t the one who’s been unable to coach a defence since the Champions League Final defeat in Paris.

Gazidis isn’t the one who handed RvP the captaincy over the more commanding Vermaelen.

Gazidis isn’t the one who’s at fault for the ill-behaved players who keep getting sent off.

        The blame lies with Wenger.

Don’t get me wrong, Stan is the better of the two. Usmanov would make it worse & i certainly don’t want to see Arsenal messed up in debt like Chelsea or even Man U.. My disappointment is Gazidis & i don’t know why a  guy who worked in MLS was hired as our CEO who as indicated has absolute no idea how to run things.. except prepare balance sheets..
Though Wenger recruits players.. managing/negotiating their contracts certainly falls on Gazidis’s hand. He has to oversee these. I don’t know if you can recall but when Abromovic took over Chel$ea.. first person he targeted & hired was Peter Kenyon from Man U. What Stan did do, fire Dein & get a guy who knows more about MLS than the Premiership.Even look at our stadium deal. We gave the naming rights to Emirates reasonably cheaper price while our fan base is no way close to that of Man U or even Liverpool.. This cost us dearly. I don’t think Arsene wanted to let both Cesc & Nasri go as they were at their prime. As Arsene stated “Arsenal cannot be called a big club if they let go of their ‘big players”‘. So there is something definitely wrong with how the board is thinking & saying it in public. I don’t think the Board backs Arsene when he was interested in buying players as long as they are young.. but only forced on him when they needed to sale.Money for transfer market is not for Wenger to worry about this is to be sorted by Gazidis & should have been made available at the end of the season & NOT AFTER SELLING OUR BEST PLAYERS.

In the end, Do i want my club to be in debt like Chel$ea NO. Do i want us to spend on big names YES!! but talented ones.. has Wenger done it… YES!! Remember Arshavin?? he was a big signing then..

But, all in all there is disappointment from all the arsenal supporters but it would be wrong for all of us to jump on Wenger’s back & demoralize the whole team.. we are going thru a bad patch & the media is making it worse.. we need to voice our support to our team & manager.. It is our voice they need the most to lift them.. C’mon Gunners!!!

Are you sure about that? How do know Wenger is not willing to spend? Did he not spend 17mil on Reyes not long ago? When he sees someone exceptional, he does spend but from what I hear, it’s the salary cap that is the problem and that went way back to the invincible days. The old farts upstair down roll with the time. They don’t seem to understand time has changed. The 100K a week era has gone but that’s what we still offering.
I’m sorry to say, no matter how much I love the club or company, if someone else came in and offer me double the salary, I would’ve signed with the other guy without thinking twice. This is out of Wenger’s hand. He doesn’t sanction the money. He chooses how to play and what player(s) we need. The money part isn’t on him.
I still think he’s the man for the job but he needs backing. He needs someone like David Dein, who would come out and speak and back his manager and talk to the players. We need a out spoken fearless leader to face the public. Right now we’re just being bullied. Bullied by the media, bullied by other clubs and other managers.

The board need to reassess the pay structure at Arsenal. I believe the main reason that we have one of the highest wage bills in the PL is due to Arsenal’s insistence on paying youngsters higher than average wages, meaning that there is little at the higher tier to pay for top class/performing players. Why would a player such as Eboue, Diaby or Bendtner want to leave the club when they are earning such good money at Arsenal? The club really have to take a look at this area if it is a key factor in attracting players to the club.

Why do you guys always think that no one else can manage this team ? It baffles me to no end that some fans think that Arsene Wenger is the only manager in the world for Arsenal. Arsenal have won the league 13 times, wenger is responsible for three of those. Yes he has had good years and really done well for Arsenal. But there is life after him, and just maybe this is the time. Forget the press etc. The results speak for themselves.

When you ask why some fans think no one else can manage this team maybe they believe very few of the better managers could manage a team on a budget, something we admittedly speculate on (no proof of a small budget) as we’re like mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed shit…by the AFC board. Nothing’s clear and that’s the problem.
We seem to air the problems willingly (Hill Wood often) but the speculation on Wenger’s budget and roles within the club are still a mystery.

We as fans should all stick together and not rise to the bait being set by the media circus, in the end if Wenger fails this season he’ll probably go/ pushed anyway. We need to get behind the team fully and not boo the players, attack the board but not via the media, give them f**k all to smear us with.
