Wenger defends Cahill bid

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is on a collision course with Bolton chairman Phil Gartside over the proposed signing of Gary Cahill.

The Gunners have tabled an offer for theEngland defender which Bolton have described as “derisory”. The bid has been reported as £6 million but Wenger insisted that figure was incorrect.

“That number is wrong,” said Wenger. “It is completely wrong. I believe every negotiation is between two parties and you only have to sell the player if you are all right with the price. In this case the information is below what has been spoken about.”

Bolton manager Owen Coyle has blasted the offer, saying “derisory doesn’t even cover it” while Gartside re-tweeted a message sent by a Trotters fan angered by the offer.

Wenger, however, was furious at Bolton’s reaction and added: “You can believe Gartside or you can believe me. It’s not right. It’s not the truth. If Gartside can say I am lying I am ready to confront him. The truth is that we never speak about our negotiations. If a club doesn’t want to sell a player it can keep him. When we sign a player we come out here and tell you and keep the price a secret.

“They do not need to sell the player, they can keep him. If you ask do I want to buy your house and you are not happy with the price you say no, that’s it. Why should you feel insulted? I don’t understand. If the player is not for sale they can keep him. I don’t understand the problem. If we want to buy the player we buy the player. I do not have to explain for how much.”

Cahill has long thought to have been a target for the London club, who are working on a number of potential signings before the transfer window closes on Wednesday.

“There was a conversation between (chairman) Phil Gartside and a representative of Arsenal,” said Coyle.

“I’m only passing this on as a third party, but the word ‘derisory’ doesn’t even cover it.

“When I make an offer for a player, I’d like to think in the right ball park, but this wasn’t even close.

“I spoke to Gary Cahill about it before the Macclesfield game, and he knows everything that’s going on.”

Cahill is in the final year of his contract and has also been linked with Manchester City this summer.

Well bolten sell to city /man/chel/liver you cannot they dont want him arsenal know this so take our offer or he is free next year. Also not england regular and in last year of contract so maybe £8-£10 mill fair price as he would be 3rd choice for us.

Cahill is not as good as Koscielny, he’s not in the same league as Vermaelen and both cost less than what Bolton have asked. Vermaelen was the captain of Ajax and wasn’t in the last year of his contract.

I agree. I dont think he is worth the ridiculous amounts that some media outlets are quoting like 20 million pounds. Are you kidding me ? I spose thats the going rate for english players these days but I think we already have good CB’s. Their are more pressing concerns like LB and CM also I think we could do with a wideplayer/striker. Come to think of it CB is one of most well covered positions. The main concerns are left back and center mid.

Unless of course the drug isn’t as good as it’s supposed to be and you feel there’s better alternatives for the huge amount the drug costs..

Agree with u guys. Cahill is not as good as it sounds. Also I’ve been very critical to Wenger for the last 8-9 months, but I’m getting fed up. These media c.nts are lying a lot. They even publish what they hear in the toilet. Animals. Leave Wenger alone (I’m not AKB). Even in his present/poorer state you are not even worth to kiss his footprint.

Cahill is as good or slightly better than Kos at least and he is used to the physical and tough English game and PL. He is Bolton’s best defender so 6/7m + add ons is not enough, they’ve been waiting for a offer all summer but now they must lower their demands because they could lose him on a free or for less in January. I don’t think they will stand in his of his ambitions if a good offer of £10-12m is made + add ons.
