Injury agony for Arsenal as Vermaelen has surgery on ankle

Thomas Vermaelen faces a lengthy period on the sidelines amidst reports tonight that he needs surgery on his dodgy ankle. Arsenal defender Vermaelen spent most of last season in the treatment room and it seems he is destined to sit out once more for a period with the news being broken on Twitter.

The social networking site is awash with the story that the Belgian international requires an op on the ankle once more and, if true, it is devastating news for the Gunners.

Of course, we await conformation at this point and we must emphasise that is this is the claim doing the rounds within the Arsenal Twitterati. No official confirmation or subsequent news media outlet has, thus far, backed these claims up. STOP PRESS: Tonight’s Mirror, via the well-sourced AFC journo John Cross, claims that TV5 underwent surgery tonight on his left ankle in Stockholm and will be out for at least two months.

With TV5 out, AW can choose from Per Mertesacker, Koscielny, Djourou, Miquel and Squillaci, while at a push, Alex Song, could sit in. But it does beg the question, and one which is growing, just how competant is our medical team?

Have you considered why this story would break in the middle of the night? I doubt it until it is confirmed by Arsenal. If it is crap, your blog is doomed.

Oh look, it turns out this article is correct.

“Twitter is your factual base now?”
Are you on Twitter? Because I am and it’s an excellent source for breaking news. Yossi tweetd that he was going to sign for us 30 mins before anyone else had news of it. Wilshere announced he’d be out for 2-3 months before anyone else posted it, Wilshere was also the first person to announce that the Arteta deal was back on, Henderson told us yesterday how the reserves felt about training with Arteta and that everyone was buzzing with how good he is, Santos announced on his Twitter that the Arsenal rumours were correct and he would have big news soon, days before he was even officially linked with us . Sky news, BBC, numerous other sports journalists and celebrities tweet their articles and news before they’re broadcast on TV, radio or even uploaded to their websites.

You can’t get more factual than than the players themselves telling us. I follow all the Arsenal players and reserves, they post some keen insight into the club and very often post videos and pics of them pulling pranks on each other in training, and things like that. Everything is posted on twitter now before it reaches anything else because it literally takes the same time as text message to post.

I’ve even gotten replies from Djourou and Craig Eastmond when I tweeted them, thanking me for wishing them well with injuries and returning.

As for Vermaelen being out it sucks big time, he is the best defender in the league by far but I think we’ll be okay if we keep Kos and Mertesacker fit. I think their contrasting styles will compliment each other very well.

cannot remember a season with major injury drama’s to our players where we are light on suitable back ups!WTF is going on here!!!?…..
For me its either we have very poor fitness people at the club (considering the number of soft tissue injuries we get year after year) OR
we have really crappy medical staff that couldn’t diagnose a cut lip!!!!

Arsenal must have Crappy Medical Staff is where my money is - Both when they give the all clear to new players we bring into the club (made of glass) AND when diagnosing and formulating treatment plans for the injured players!
How else do you explain one week at most injuries becoming season ending injuries to our players time after time?

Man you have to be really really passionate about ArsenalFC these days to stay positive!

Why are arsenal fans so against the club, Hagreaves spent the whole two seasons in clinic and only to go to Mancity. That guy in the tots, (forgot his name) goes to one game and misses the next. While for us, now Rosisky is back and running

When will these managers learn ? they are paid millions and millions to get things right, For weeks I have been saying that Arsenal need to buy 2 centre backs not just Mertsacker, Vermaelen is injury prone, so is Van Persie and so is Walcott, so now you are left with the same scenario again as the old trafford defeat, one shit centre half and one decent one again, total and utter madness by the modern manager, Ledley King is without doubt a genius to be able to play at the level he does when fit without training is just an unbelievable footballing talent, but he is about as much use as a chocolate kettle and sadly 3 of your starting 11 are the same..if we can all see that at some stage this season TV, TW, and RVP will all go missing for 6 weeks each why can’t Wenger ? he should have at the very least catered for it at the back in the transfer window with 2 decent signings in the central role..
