Arsenal’s Frimpong chooses Ghana duty over Three Lions

Emmanuel Frimpong is quoted as saying in regard to his international future: “If Ghana call me, I will ride my own bicycle from England to Ghana.” And now it seems the young Arsenal midfielder has made his decision and has has chosen Ghana over the Three Lions.

Jamie Jackson at the Guardian is reporting that Frimpong made up his mind after meeting Kwesi Nyantakyi, the Ghana Football Association president, at a London hotel following the Black Stars’ 1-0 friendly defeat to Brazil at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night.

The claim is that Nyantakyi, who has held his position for less than a week, told the Guardian: “Yesterday we met him after the game at Fulham at a hotel. He wants to play for Ghana. We have to apply to Fifa now – send them the documentation and wait. It is out of my hands how long they will take, but with my experience [of these matters] I expect no longer than three months and it will probably be shorter than that.”

It is said that Frimpong’s decision will disappoint the senior England management and the FA. Frimpong, 19, was born in Accra and came to England as a nipper.

I don’t think anger is such an issue with him, just aggression/discipline. I don’t think he’s stupid, though, so I expect him to sort that out pretty quickly. The other sides to his game are exceptional, and he looks like a quality defensive midfielder already. To be honest, I don’t think even wilshere made such an impact in his early matches with us – he was very consistent, and grew over the course of the season, but frimpong has just exploded right from the off.
I’d like to see him playing alongside song. They’re quite similar in some ways, but I’d like to see a return to the days when we would bully the midfield. Song, in particular, has a bit of creativity as well, so it wouldn’t really hurt the attack that much imo.

So we will lose him to the African Cup of Nations right in the middle of the season, along with Song and likely Gervinho.
