New Arsenal star Mertesacker found woefully lacking

Who would have thought that Swansea at home this Saturday would be such a pivotal game in the Arsenal’s Premier League campaign? Not this subscriber, that’s for sure. You see, I saw the season thus far panning out like this; Geordies away, three points, nae messin’, man.

Bin-dippers at home? Well, our home record agianst this lot is, or was, superb, so three points. Our survey said…

Mancs away: draw at best. (er, didn’t happen). So seven points from the first three skirmishes, then? Nah. A point! One sodding point. OK, yes, we have safely navigated our way into the CL group stages by sailing past Udinese but heck, our league form ain’t great.

And so to the Swans. What lies beneath in our clash with the Welsh wonders? To the team news. Mikel Arteta is champing at the bit to make his debut for God’s Own and I predict the Spaniard will have a stormer. I hear that Theo Walcott will be fit to play on Saturday despite a hamstring problem causing Fabio Capello to rest him for England’s 1-0 victory over Wales at Wembley on Tuesday. Good.

Another debutant is sure to be Per Mertersacker and, given the injury to Thomas Vermaelen – out for at least five weeks because of an ankle problem – thank the Dennis that AW signed him. Ahead of the game, he said: ”It is exciting. It is a new phase in my life and I am really looking forward to it, but I also feel nervous. It is like before the first day at school. Now I have a new challenge in a new country, a new style of play and a new language and I am ready for it.”

Worryingly, PM put in a shoddy show for Germany in their 2-2 draw with Poland in the week. A chap called Clark Whitney, supposedly a keen observer of all things Germanic soccer, said this: “On paper, new Arsenal signing Per Mertesacker has all the right qualities that the Gunners need. But while on international duty on Tuesday, he showed precisely why he is no messiah for Arsene Wenger’s ailing defence.

“In his first international match since March, Mertesacker was found woefully lacking as Germany drew 2-2 with Poland. He was indecisive and often caught out of position, his lack of pace was exposed, and he even made a few careless passes. While it is true that the former Werder Bremen man is still somewhat short of match practice, his night to forget was all too foreseeable.”

In the words of Shaggy from Scooby Doo…”yikes!”.

To other news of our next encounter: It seems Bacary Sagna is suffering from “illness” while Kieran Gibbs is back in training following a hamstring strain so the gaffer has a decision to make there with new boy Santos poised as well.

Jack Wilshere’s ankle injury is well documented and other absentees include Seb Squillaci and Abou Diaby while Gervinho and the Alex Song are serving suspensions.

A must win game.

Mertesacker was for year a regular in the German national team, and as far as I remember, that’s one of the most exciting teams on the planet since at least 2 years. At the same time, his role in that team is – what? TO DEFEND. How do you defend excitingly? The best defenders are those that are hardly noticed.
The game against Poland was a friendly, I watched it, and with trepidation, cause I’m Polish. The Poles were fighting for life, as they should do in any game, but the games against Germany are always special. Did you know we failed to net against Germany for over 30 years? This game was supposed to be our historical turning point, and it was, in a large part due to the fact that Germany approached this game as just another friendly.
Mertesacker is not Usain Bolt, granted. He tends to be sluggish. But you have to remember that Poland played a highly aggressive defence, hijacking the ball almost every minute. I’m sure if you look through the stats for the game, most German players get a poor efficient for passes. Most of the attempts made by Poland came through the left channel. You know Mertesacker is not a full-back, right? The first goal was conceded after a mass scuffle, involving 4 or 5 players from Germany and 2 Poles, and I have to say that the crucial mistake here was made by the German DM, who let Dudka pass and then failed to stop him from entering the box. The second goal was a penalty after a mad charge down the right channel. Mertesacker played the opposite part of the centre, so it’s again not his fault. Overall, he looked rather confident and was more or less composed. Plus, he came close to making it during several charges by the quicksilver Peszko.
If Clark Whitney is in any way related to Whitney Houston, tell him to cut that dope.

    “– thank the Dennis” nice…:)
And about Per, let him play for couples of matches, them judge him, don’t drop the gauntlet on one bad showing. I bet Arsenal had him scouted for many matches before signing him. And German defense is one of the best in the world.

Wow, if ever that’s a reference to an authority on the game!  Bit of a doomer article this one.  Perhaps we should start re-quoting Tony Adams: Vermaelen is the wrong type of signing for the Arsenal.

I’m wondering why you choose to quote some bloke saying bad stuff when you could have quoted plenty of well respected people saying good stuff about Per?  Time for a rethink.

No offence but since when have Americans been authorities on Soccer???

The guy clearly has an anti Arsenal agenda or something because everything I’ve seen from people who watched the game said that he’s talking crap and that Mertesacker was ok in a very much weakened german side and that the player who stood out as being poor in the German defence was Boeteng. Apart from Muller (does he get in the starting line up nowadays?) every other players for germany was second choice.

Also Per was the captain on the night.

Eldo – Since when has some twat writing a story on goal.com been news?? Its one of the least trustworthy sources of “news” in the world and mostly has copied articles from tabloids. And the writers, even the editors don’t seem to know anything about football. Its only popular because it has a load of bullshit made up gossip.

“… since when have Americans been authorities on soccer”?? I’m guessing here but I would say since America became a land that Germans, Portugese, Spaniards, Poles, Irish and yes,  even English,  call home. Our prejudices often reveal more about ourselves than we can imagine.

So the american in question who now lives in germany is actually a european who lives in America? Or you think that americans have learned from these europeans? Either way it doesn’t make sense. I know several americans living in london but I still don’t know enough about american football to write an analysis of a player in one game, despite taking quite a big interest and watching it on TV regularly.

And its not prejudice because I have listened to the opinions of many american journalists on football. I can’t think of a single american who is considered an expert on football. Simply because it hasn’t been popular for long enough and is still considered, what the 4th or 5th national sport?

By the way, what do you think it reveals about me Einstein? I would guess that whatever you’re thinking, its completely wrong.

some are just obsessed with negatives concerning Arsenal. Per mertesacker at 26 have played 76 games for Germany. Common, there is need for perspective here ! Judging him on a single game will not only amount to lack of respect to a player of his calibre but also exhibit one’s level of naivety. Garry Cahill at same age is still trying to establish himself in the very average [ if record is anything to go by ] England team. I am sure Mr Carl Eldridge would easily have paid £20 million for Cahill’s service if he were to be in charge at Arsenal Fc. Anyway, thank God that is not the case.

    http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/southafrica2010/statistics/players/distanceandspeed.html

seems that there is not to many players quicker than him.

maybe they mean turning speed rather than speed. either way I think that the same people would start going on about cahills lack of european experience, vidic’s inability to cope with pace, carvalho’s lack of height, Lucio’s lack of premier league experience etc etc etc if we signed any of them.

Yes its all about acceleration and changes of pace.

Look at Walcott. Massive top speed and can do 100m in no time but is less effective in his runs than someone like ljungberg who was not particularly quick but was super fast at changing pace and was the fastest around over the first 5 yards.

But as a centre back he can make up for his lack of pace with his quick mind, excellent tackling ability and excellent positional awareness. A partnership with Vermaelen would have been great but now he will be partnered with Koscielny for at least 2 months so we’ll see how it goes. hopefully they can forge a solid partnership with Frimmy in front of them.

Mertesacker was never any good. Werder Bremen were poor last season with him in their defence. Nevermind what the stats say – if you ask anyone who has watched him play they’ll tell you that he’s not great. People assumed that because he’s a tall German he must be a great defender…. WRONG! Cahill was the signing required & we failed to bring him in.

Everyone I’ve spoken who has seen him play has said that he is good and that he’s exactly what Arsenal need so you’re clearly talking to the wrong people! Cheer up, man up and support the team ffs.

Also I saw him in the last world cup and he looked pretty good alongside arne freiderich.

By the way last season he was partnered by none other than Mikael Silvestre until he got injured so its not as if he had good players around him last year.

I do support the team & I spend all my spare cash on games & shirts etc – but as a supporter I feel I have a right to express an opinion on new signings. Its just an opinion. It doesnt make me an Arsenal hater at all. I am frustrated at this signing for the simple reason that I passionately want Arsenal to win the league. Fans who are hailing Mertesacker as the answer to all our problems in defense have their own opinion which is fair enough, only time will tell. Im excited about all the other signings – but just have huge doubts over this perticular player. Does that make me a fake fan???

Well he is part of the team and your statement is not supporting him, so you’re not supporting the team. I wasn’t suggesting anything about you personally.

imo fans are free to criticise but all the negativity inevitably boils over to matchdays where a negative atmosphere is created in the stadium and this clearly affects the players.

I get the feeling that lots of ‘fans’ don’t mind seeing arsenal players do badly so that they can give them abuse and moan and tell everyone how clever they are that they were right. For me, whoever steps out on the pitch in an arsenal shirt deserves to be supported. It doesn’t matter how good they are or who they are. They are Arsenal players so they should get the support of Arsenal fans. I have my doubts about lots of the current squad but when they step onto the pitch they all get my full support. Even Adebayor at his worst got my full support.

I’m sure it gives these people some kind of pleasure but I get much more pleasure when we win stuff.

This guy is already being reported as feeling nervous (apprehensively of course), the last thing he needs to be readingor hearing about is that he isn’t good enough. How do you know he won’t be good enough? Are you Mystic Meg?

Rather than state your rights to criticise individuals excercise your right to support them, as a fan, THATS what being a fan is about, negative speculation creates poor performances, how many players have been great at the beginning for Arsenal then tapered off dramatically, think Denilson, Arshavin….could it be the negative aspects of booing and groans at games driving ambitions down?

Why Are so  many Arsenal “supporters” so willing to knock anything the club do.

People have been moaning for a couple of seasons about lack of investment in the team.  The club buy players and all the “supporters” can do is denigrate the quality of those players.

Mertesacker has yet to pull on an Arsenal shirt yet already he is being written off, I can recall several people on this website calling out for the club to sign the very same player.

Now all we hear is “we should have signed Cahill”, well we didn’t!  Bolton wanted too much money, maybe Cahill wanted too much money.

This is the real world!  It’s not fantasy football!  Just because a club wants a particular player it doesn’t mean they can just have him.

The transfer window is closed.  It doesn’t open until January.  The players we have got are the players who are going to play for the club, regardless of how much some “supporters” wish Arsenal had bought some different players.

Get behind the squad, get off their backs and support the club whole-heartedly, that’s what real supporters do.

Problem is some of us recall the hard times at Arsenal pre Wenger. Yes he is a stubborn b*****d and possibly a bit tactically inept….sometimes, but he has given us great memories and deserves one last chance to get it right or go, until then as you say let’s get behind them all instead of all this bitching on meaningless unassociated topics.
I don’t give a flying f**k how a player performs internationally, different manager, set up and priorities, playing for your country doesn’t cut as much as it used to.
