Arsenal take narrow 1-0 win over Premier League new-boys

Arsenal arrested their worrying run of form with a narrow 1-0 win over Premier League new-boys Swansea at the Emirates.

Andrei Arshavin scored an opportunist’s goal five minutes before the break after a mistake from Swans keeper Michel Vorm, but they failed to kill off Swansea, who rallied late on as some desperate defending and a howling miss from Danny Graham saw the hosts close out the victory.

Arsenal move out of the bottom three after their first win of the season, while Swansea slip down to 17th.

In addition to their last stand, the Swans were denied by the woodwork and some fine goalkeeping from Wojciech Szczesny.

That is not to say the Gunners did not deserve the win - Robin van Persie also hit the post and missed a few good chances, as did Aaron Ramsey and late substitute Marouane Chamakh - but it was far from convincing given the clear quality advantage over Swansa.

As expected, the new-look Arsenal side dominated possession for much of the first half, without creating too many clear-cut chances: the best opportunity fell to Ramsey in the second minute, but the Wales captain blasted wide when put clean through by an excellent through ball from new-boy Arteta, who impressed initially but faded as the match progressed.

Another Arsenal debutant was Germany defender Per Mertesacker, who largely looked composed but almost fell short when he failed to hold off Graham as Kemy Agustien swung over a superb cross: the former Werder Bremen stopper’s blushes were spared by a wonderful reflex save by Szczesny, who clawed the ball away from the inside of the post.

Those early exchanges summed up the game, as Arsenal pressed and pressed while the Jacks used their pace on the counter attack. And down the other end it was a Swansea man’s turn to pull off a last-gasp stop, this time defender Steven Caulker as he bravely hurled himself into the post to hook Theo Walcott’s low finish off the line on the quarter hour.

A 20-minute lull followed before any meaningful opportunity was created, as a wicked cross from Neil Taylor during the visitors’ best spell of pressure wrought havoc in the Gunners defence before Kieran Gibbs smacked it behind for a corner.

From that set piece Mertesacker made up for his earlier hesitance with a trademark flying block after his team-mates failed to clear their lines, and it was starting to look like Brendan Rogers’s side would give Arsenal more than a run for the money they spent on transfer deadline day.

But, from nothing, the hosts went ahead, thanks in part to a blunder from the previously impressive Vorm – and to the brilliance of Arshavin.

Vorm gathered a mis-hit Walcott cross and, in an attempt to quickly release a counter attack, he rolled the ball against the heels of full-back Angel Rangel, possibly intending to put it through his legs as he run away down the right.

Russian playmaker Arshavin – whose work-rate and quality have been questioned over the last year – had been a determined thorn in Swansea’s side all game, chasing everything down and forcing errors from defenders, and he completed his personal turnaround by showing great vision and skill to drive home a first-time left-foot finish from the acutest of angles as a hapless, helpless Vorm looked on.

Despite that blow the visitors were not disheartened, and for the remainder of the half and from the restart they saw at least as much of the ball as Arsenal – and they went very close when Scott Sinclair’s fizzing free-kick beat the flying Szczesny and bounced off the crossbar.

That seemed to wake Arsenal, who responded in kind as Van Persie hit the post after a trademark dribble inside from the left, while minutes later the Dutchman failed to keep his shot down after a clever one-two with Ramsey on the edge of the area.

Swansea were suddenly on the rack, and Arsenal introduced another new face into the equation as Yossi Benayouncame on for the tiring Arshavin, who was afforded what is now a rare ovation from the home fans.

But with Benayoun failing to get into the match, it entered another mid-half lull, with the only move of note a bizarre sequence of events that saw Bacary Sagna place a cross too close to Vorm, who completely missed the ball only for Van Persie to react far too slowly to what was an open goal, the ball bouncing away to safety as both players looked on with a shade of embarrassment.

The latter stages of the game saw Arsenal control possession, wary of giving the Welsh side a chance to hit them on the break, with chances rare: the best opportunity fell to substitute Chamakh, who played to type by heading straight at Vorm after Gibbs’s excellent cross found him free from eight yards.

Referee Stuart Atwell signalled four minutes of added time, which sparked Swansea into a renaissance of sorts. Led by substitute Mark Gower, a former Spurs trainee, they battered the hosts in injury time, with some excellent defending from Sagna keeping them twice at bay when his colleagues struggled to cope with the pressure.

Then came the show stopper as, from the resultant corner, Szczesny fapped, Caulker knocked the ball on and Graham – with the goal at his mercy – blasted over, leaving everyone of a south Welsh disposition with heads in hands.

It was a bad miss by any standards and one that has further implications for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who has his work cut out if his nervous side are to build up enough confidence to challenge for a European place, let alone the title.

Challenge for the title, challenge for a Champions League spot, this lot?   The only thing this team will be capable of challenging for is fourth from bottome with Swansea, Norwich and Blackburn.  Wenger HAS been a great manager for us, but regretably no longer.  He has no tactical awareness and his recent signings have been mediocre at best.  It happens in all walks of life and sport is no different, you can become stale by staying in a place too long, Wenger has been at Arsenal too long now.  It just isn’t working.  It is time – probably not until the end of this season – but it is time for both parties to go their seperate ways.

The whole team played nervously, understandably after the last game but let’s not write them off yet.
We’ve got Song and Gervinho coming back, Vermaelen and Wilshere also plus let’s not forget Arteta and PM made their debuts with very little time to gel into the new surroundings, and Swansea played the best football in the Championship last season.

Not doom and gloom yet for me.

gervinho will make a big difference. Frankly I think Frimpong is already better than Song and he looked much calmer yesterday and is certainly more disciplined positionally.

Wilshere and vermaelen will be out for months so for the time being we will be as we are.

the new players need to settle in quickly because arteta was probably our best out field player yesterday and gervinho has been our best out field player so far this season and I could easily envisage a starting line up with all of mertesacker, santos, arteta, park, gervinho and possibly benayoun in it. Its not the new players who have been letting us down its the old ones.

To be honest I like Song, I think he gets tarnished more than he should because often he takes one for the team when Arshavin or Gibbs/Clichy have been up the field.
It’s early days for Frimpong, he looks good already maybe a little hot headed but he looks hard as nails.

It’ll be good to see how Park fairs, I read he gives it his all and never stops.

Absolutely right. Wenger should have been moves along two seasons ago.

We are just witnessing the winding down of his era and it will be with a whimper, top 8 if we are lucky. He will be gone at end of this season and about time and so should Ivan.

Title? Don’t make me laugh. We beat Swansea through LUCK.

At least twice, Ramsey was very poor in his passing , particularly at the counter-attack with 3 Arsenal players upfront waiting.

Arteta seems to be okay and can do Cesc work while Benayoun is not good enough and I would rather see AOC. Without Cesc killing pass and Nasri X-factor shot, att is not efficient enough. hope AW would try to use 442 instead.

So worried now, really thought AW would send them out fired up, siege mentality and all that, but they came out and got a goal that was gifted to us.
Without disrespecting Swansea, what on earth are we going to do against tougher teams?

Yes a gifted goal but after immense pressure quite deserved, also one cleared off the line and RvP hit the post on a day where he was nowhere near his composed self, possibly after effects of a good international performance

Arteta and RVP created some good moves against a team with 10 behind the ball.  Sagna, Kosc, Merte were all fine in front of Szcezzer.  Frimpong – off the pace.  Rambo – off the pace and missed a near-sitter in minute 2 as well as a pass in minute 93 in a 4 v 1 (where is Pub League football when you need it?), Gibbs – immature and makes horrible 1 v 1 decisions, Theo – reverted to immature and has one move that everyone in Europe has seen for the 1,000th time and prepares to defend on the way out of the tunnel, AA is what you get – some running and lots of walking with a few defensive howlers in the cards all the time (Anyone see Frimpong dressing down AA after he went for a ball on the flank around minute 70 with a “bail out” slide and let the Swansea player open us up all the way to the by line?).

And what is going on with fitness again?  Everyone looks slow and tired?  Everything looks at 75% of full speed all the time?  Frimpong has been off on a card and was still struggling in minute 70 – I mean WTF?

Get through these next few weeks with Song and Gervinho back and Santos and Chu better matriculated into the side.  TV and Jack can’t return to the side soon enough.  UGH!

I went to the game, its looking very worrying. The players body language looked like they were going through the motions, however our keeper was excellent again.

Arteta kept it simple, Andre was livelier then usual. RVP looks like he is on his way sometime soon, as for chamakh, there was no passion at all.

Im afraid its looking like Arsene last season & he knows it & so do the players.

Agree with the last post about Wengers time being up. Today confirmed to me that the guy has no understanding of captaincy at all. When RVP came off he handed the armband to Chamakh and he had no idea who to give it to, and I think he ended up wearing it himself! It makes me cringe when he tells the media we have leaders all over the pitch. WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY THEN? I hope he considers Vermaelen for the captaincy when he returns from injury because I don’t see any natural leaders out there.

Walcott was by far the worst player on the pitch. Don’t remember him retaining possession one single time. Lack of quality coupled with a lack of passion and he should definitely be dropped.

Yeah, he looked like he was trying too hard and rushing his decisions, hopefully the new lads will settle in quickly and everyone will calm down and compose themselves.
I think that game contained massive pressure, the OT drubbing, Cesc and the twat departing, high expectancy playing the new boys all in all a satisfying average performance result.

i disagree. he didn’t look like he was trying too hard. In fact he looked like he was scared to recieve the ball for most of the time. He simply looked as though he had no idea what to do with and without the ball.

Nothing to write home about. When it takes you a freak goal to get points, then you are relying to much on luck than hard work and quality investment.I said at the begging that our finishing position is 6th.I am changing that to 7th or 8th as a can’t see us scoring or getting points even from the weakest teams……SAD!!

So how many games have we lost in the past due to a freak goal or ref decision? It’s called karma, accept it, as a gift if you like but it’ll do wonders for confidence followed by great performances.

Top 4 will be a greater challenge than normal but let’s not panic just yet.

I’ve just watched the extended highlights, on Football First, I saw a lot to applaud, yes there was some nervousness, hardly surprising given the start to the season the players have had and the introduction, from the beginning, of two new signings as well as Frimpong’s return from suspension.

I thought Arteta was terrific, his ability to pick out a telling pass was every bit as good as the departed Spaniard, so long as he can maintain his fitness I don’t think we’re going to miss him as much as everybody feared.

It seems to be the done thing to criticise Walcott but he had a good game, he was pulling defenders out of position and was unlucky not to score on a couple of occassions, pity Ramsey wasn’t a bit more composed in the opening minutes as a goal then would have settled the nerves and given a whole new complexion to the game.

If van Persie could have converted one or two chances the game would have been much more comfortable.

I reckon we’ve got the makings of a very good side, with the return of some of the injured and suspended players, Wilshire in particular, I can see this side heading quickly up the table.

    Top Four?  Most certainly!!!

True John. Also, the “gift” of a goal was taken well by Arshavin. The acute angle with not much time to place his well deserved goal.

There’s certainly a lot of positives to take from this game given the circumstances, of course this performance wouldn’t be good enough to compete at the top level but the players know that as well and will deliver.

I assume you didn’t go to the game, so did you watch the whole thing?. Because if you just watched motd then it didn’t really come across how bad we were in the final third.

It isn’t the ‘done thing’ to criticise walcott because people hardly mention how terrible he really is because he is english. I think the only thing he did well was the deflected shot that lead to the goal. If he can keep scoring regularly then it might be worth having a player who only contributes negatively for the rest of the game but I would rather see pretty much any of our other wingers playing.

Also people moan about arshavin not working hard defensively but more criminal is walcotts lack of attacking work ethic! At least arsh actually makes forward runs. The number of times robin or arsh had the ball in wide positions high up the pitch with no support and you see theo about 40 or 50 yards out jogging forward with no real thought of giving them an option is simply unacceptable.

And when we do have possession and theo is in front of the ball, he is usually standing next to a defender so that it makes it impossible for anyone to pass to him. For most of the game he looked like he was trying really hard to make sure he couldn’t recieve the ball.

Add to that he had half a pitch to run into if he could get past one defender several times and what did he do? sprint straight at the defender who tackled him easily every time. he is fast but he doesn’t know how to use his pace. Just being faster doesn’t mean you can take people on you have to use changes of pace and direction. Remember how henry used to slow down, almost to a stop, then suddenly burst past the defender? That is how its done.

Its also worrying how uninterested he looked for the whole game.

Sorry to rant so much about one player but his list of weaknesses is long. Saying all that, he is playing out of position and it would be much better for everyone if he was second choice striker, coming on after 70 minutes up front when the defenders are tired, because his only strengths are running off the ball and finishing.

We don’t yet know how good park will be but of he does well then my first choice front three would be gervinho left park middle and rvp right, and if park doesn’t do that well then it would be gervinho left rvp middle and arshavin/benayoun/rosicky right.

You’re right I didn’t go to the game, neither did I watch MotD, as it says in my post, I watched the extended highlights on Sky’s Football First, almost an hour of the game.  I probably saw more of the action, and certainly closer than many of those in the ground.  What I saw bears little relation to your criticism.

Next match against dortmund, if theo plays i’ll do “theo watch” and count the number of times he does things well and does things badly. I’ve done this before and been rather generous to him (eg playing a smple 5 yard pass gets him a point) but he still lost something like 20 – 4.

Title? Forget it. Top four? Hilarious we are already 8 points off the top four it will be top 8 if we are lucky based on this performance. Swansea could easily have won this game, we got a lucky break.

    This is last season continued.

What you are witnessing is a long, painful overdue end of Wenger’s and Ivans era — with a Frankenstein cobbled team that is psychologically damaged. Someone will have to come in and rebuild, sooner the better.
