Rejuvenated Arshavin back to his best for Arsenal

The Swansea game wasn’t the easiest to watch, I have to admit. We looked nervous at the back and uncomfortable throughout the 90 minutes; in fact we looked like a team that was still struggling to come to terms with having the absolute stuffing knocked out of us by one of our greatest rivals which was fair enough. So in light of this, it was a good job Swansea were visiting (no disrespect intended). Had it been the blue half of Manchester or one of our London compatriots, it may have been a different story altogether and our crisis would have been ever more obvious.

As a result, our wounded troops ground out an old school 1-nil result, all be it thanks to a lucky goal but a goal that could just be the stroke of luck our boys needed. Everyone knows how much of a difference a moment like that could mean to a season and it certainly feels timely given the fact that Swansea were defiant as Arsenal tried in vain to drive that goal home.

And Arsharvin, a player some sceptics have looked at as surplus to requirements, still had to draw on some magnificent skill to slot that ball home. Despite not knowing what was going through Arshavin’s mind as that ball presented itself at his feet, he showed true professionalism and a calm head to curl in the most important goal of Arsenals season so far. It made me feel dizzy just watching Arshavin keep things together knowing what was riding on that shot and especially as he has been lacking in confidence of late.

It’s true that we looked jaded and especially nervous as Swansea went close on a number of occasions but we held firm. Mertesacker and Arteta debuts went well overall. Mertesacker will need to exert his presence a little more in future games but he stayed solid and more importantly, kept a clean sheet.

Arteta played as if he had always had Arsenal blood in him; he took control of the midfield from the offset and looked at home in his role as he pushed Arsenal forward again and again. Both players had the perfect start as they adjusted to the team and will only get stronger as the season progresses and although some would think it was only against Swansea, the fact is it was never going to be the opponent that mattered but the result. Arsenal needed a win, they needed 3 points and no one was going to accept anything less.

Yes it was unconvincing but it was a result. We did expect more from them but you can’t falter the way the boys handled the game, not to mention the 60,000 expectant fans waiting for a little bit of hope and all this against a team that properly fancied their chances of an upset. After all, Swansea were desperately seeking their first Premier League goal and in truth we had presented ourselves as their best chance to date.

Not convinced anyone can sing the praises of Arshavin to be honest, he is a professional footballer on significant money and really should not be ‘getting away with’ slotting a ball in from an acute angle as ‘rejuvinated’ ..he is ordinary at best and on the wages he earns should be putting that away 9 times out of 10..a much needed victory and a nice start for a few debutants but keep it sensible, against anyone in the top 10 it would have been a certain goal thrown away in the final minutes and another depressing walk home !

Yes he should slot away from that angle but the truth is many don’t and not only Arsenal players coupled with the fact it all happened so fast he did extremely well. Rejuvinated could be used to describe that he has looked more up for it of late, whether that will continue remains to be seen.

fair comment Berg10 I am not being awkward honestly I am not but I am very much in the camp that a professional footballer should be working hard as an absolute minimum and what sets the very top footballers apart from the average is the fact they have an inner ability to do the unexpected, I would fully expect most conference forwards to have slotted that away.
Isn’t it bloody sad when you say things like ‘he has looked more up for it’ good god Lennon is no different, how on earth does anyone make it at the top level when they are capable of even dropping to such lows where fans can accuse them of not trying ? I was no genius but I did play for Hendon and Barnet as a 17 year old and was around the conference before a knee injury finished me at 26 and I got some serious bollockings for not back tracking at times, How Wenger and Redknapp continually pick players who just cannot be arsed on 80k a week is beyond me mate ..ha ha

I know that Bigsy and I agree the modern top level footballer (majority) are so far overpaid and particularly the fringe/young element at AFC that complacency rears its head too often. The amount of ridiculous money spewing from the game at top level cannot keep happening without catastrophic results or at best, (and I mean this as an alternative to massive debt) there will be a breakaway league and our two clubs won’t be invited or good enough for that matter (I’ll resist the temptation to state something nasty there) :-

Hendon and Barnet? Thought you said you played for the spuds lol.

i can’t agree with you…Rejuvinated could definitely be used to describe that goal. If other players got that ball, i don’t think they could convent that into a goal. If theo or ramsey got that ball, i doubt that we could even get a corner from it.

entitled to your view but I must disagree, most pro managers would be very upset if their player failed to score from there, any half decent player pro or amateur should be scoring from there, bloody hell most of us can score in an empty goal from a corner so that was not difficult to tuck away.

Fait point, the title doesn’t really do the article justice though. Rejuvenated is the wrong word as well but the article simply highlights a renewed confidence from one of the suspects that apparently wasn’t trying very hard before now. I think you missed the point of the article anyway, the fact is the team dug out the victory that was needed and at a time when the media and the fans were ready to crucify. Its games like these that can normally be easily lost so fair play to them.
