Why Arsenal fans must keep faith in Arsene

I take you back to the 94/95 season. Arsenal finished 12th in the Premier League. 6 points fewer, and they would have been relegated. It was a season riddled with scandal, with George Graham being sacked for accepting bribes and Paul Merson famously breaking down and admitting his cocaine and alcohol addiction.

The 95/96 season saw some positive changes. Bruce Rioch, fresh from achieving promotion with Bolton, was appointed manager and a club record signing was made, with Dennis Bergkamp arriving from Milan. The team finished in fifth, with a last gasp Bergkamp goal securing Uefa Cup football. But all was not well.

The 96/97 season began against a backdrop of turmoil. Rioch had fallen out with Ian Wright over playing position, and, more poignantly, with the board, over transfer funds. He was ultimately sacked, and the first quarter of the season saw two temporary managers appointed. The uncertainty and instability was brought to an end in October 96, when a forty-seven-year-old Arsene Wenger arrived from Japan.

In his first eight seasons at the club, he signed players such as Patrick Vieira, Marc Overmars, Emmanuel Petit, Freddie Ljundberg, Kanu, Thierry Henry, Lauren, Robert Pires, Kolo Toure, Gilberto Silva, Sol Campbell, Robin Van Persie and Jens Lehmann. The players he let go included Matthew Rose, Lee Harper, Adrian Clarke, Ian Shelly, Paul Shaw, Gavin McGowan, Jason Crowe, Michael Black and Graham Barrett.

In this time period, he won three league titles and four FA Cups and never finished outside the top two in the league. I know; that was then, this is now, and Wenger’s Arsenal have gone six seasons without winning anything. However, if it accepted that money is the most important ingredient of success in modern football, then Wenger should be doing no more than competing for a UEFA cup place each season.

Look at the average value of starting XI’s in Arsenal’s six year trophy-less period. The average cost of Arsenal’s starting XI has been around £36 million. Compare this with Chelsea’s (£119m) and Manchester United’s (£111m) and one can see it is a minor miracle that Arsenal are remotely competitive with these teams.

In fact, Arsenal’s first XI expenditure pales in significance when compared to Liverpool (£66m), who have failed to qualify for Champions League football in two of these six seasons and Spurs (£65m), who have finished below Arsenal in every one of these six seasons. Incredibly, perennial mid-table achievers Such as Aston Villa (£49m) and Newcastle (£43m) have had a greater average starting XI outlay. Financially, Wenger’s teams have no place competing at the top end of the table and it is a testament to his genius that they do.

It follows then that people criticise Wenger for his refusal to spend big. The argument goes that if he did, Arsenal would be doing more than finishing safely within the top four every year. But when analysing the occasions that Wenger has loosened the purse strings, it is clear that this is not always the answer. Wenger has spent £10 million or more on only 8 players in his time at Arsenal: Wiltord, Henry, Jeffers, Reyes, Arshavin, Hleb, Walcott and, recently, Arteta. One golden signing aside (and one too early to tell), these players have been poor to middling.

People forget that Wenger’s best signings tend to arrive for small fees. Scoring goals has not been a problem for Arsenal during their barren run – with 70 league goals on average per season. The problem is that they have conceded an average of ten goals more, per season, than the eventual champions. Wenger is frequently criticised for his apparent stubborn refusal to address this. The most commonly cited course of action has being the employment of a defensive coach of vast experience. Robbie Savage recently described Wenger’s failure to bring in “a Keown or an Adams” as “brainless”.

But when you consider that Wenger’s coaching staff is comprised largely of experienced defenders (Wenger, Rice, Primorac, Banfield), this argument becomes redundant. It is the quality of defenders that have been signed in the last six seasons that is the problem: Players such as Traore, Sivestre, Koscielny and Squilacci have come in to replace the likes of Lauren, Campbell, Cole and Toure. But this cannot be blamed solely on Wenger.

The man himself recently hinted that he is not entirely in control of transfers: “We have 20 people working on it. I am not the only one”, he snapped, suggesting certain transfers have not occurred as he might have liked. Since David Dein has left, there has been a shift in the way transfers and contracts are managed and it is clear that Wenger has found this frustrating. His ability to spot a top player has not changed, but those responsible for trying to sign and keep these top players, has.

In October 96, Arsene Wenger arrived at an unstable club that had never qualified for the Champions League, that averaged an attendance of 35,000, and that played Glenn Helder. He has turned Arsenal into a bone-fide super-club, worth £1.2 billion, that have, under every season of his guidance, qualified for elite European football. He has been integral in the process of moving to a perennially sold out 60,000 seater stadium, and has signed some of the best players the English league has ever seen. And let’s remember that Sir Alex Ferguson once went 6 seasons at United with just an FA Cup to his name. The patience invested in him bore fruit, so let’s do the same with Wenger.

Great article. Nice positivity on an Arsenal blog for once. Totally agree aswell. No other manager in the world could have come close to achieving what Wenger has done on the budget he has had.
I don’t agree a manager should be employed solely on past glories. But were Wenger to be sacked now then we would plummet down the table. Nobody can get as much out of players as he can (though perhaps on a par with Sir A on this one) and nobody could bring in the players that he does on his budget, or keep as many of them for so long on his budget.
Of course he has made some mistakes, who doesn’t? but he more than makes up for this with the overall stability and success he has brought to the club. He has a good few years left in him yet.

I accept your main points, however Arsene main success came with a defence that he inherited. Further his failure to address this problem was not lack of funds, a quality defender,
£15 mil + wages for a 4 year deal is an investment. Therer is no excuse. Indeed currently, The keeper & Jack wilshires introduction were not intentional but due to injuries to others.

The climate has changed, where Arsenal Fans are asked to pay the HIGHEST PRICES IN WORLD Football, to see youngesters serving their apprentiship in the first team instead of being fed into the seem slowly as used to be the case.

This is no longer Sustainable, & despite what the club would like you to think, there is no waiting list, indeed an additional13,000 tickets have been made available to red members & even these do not sell-out.

I hate Ferguson, however his success rate is undeniable, indeed although he has spent more, on analysis, his spend per trophy is well within their earnings capacity.

No one has ever asked Arsene to spend beyond the clubs means but to add 1 or 2 top quality players every season.

This seasons spending was panic buys and even goes against Arsenes player age policy.

The Kiity now holds approx £80 million + £100 milion cash + remaing property sales of £50-£30 million, would you trust him  with this cash?

Arsene must adapt now or like George Graham, his time is well & Truly over.

A succinct and absolutely bang on article. I am not a Wenger disciple, however, his efforts have been first class and with just one or two better quality defensive signings we would have won a pot or two since 2005. And it is worth mentioning that although there have been some poor defensive signings, both Sagna and Vermaelen would walk into virtually every CL team.

And how much exactly is the budget?

How do we know that it is the board who are not giving Wenger the money available. Certainly in 09/10 there was £56 million that wasn’t spent. I know Arsenal PLC has to survive but considering it is basically a not for profit business, it is strange that we make that much profit a year.

Wenger has had our faith, support and money for the last 6 years and has done nothing with it. tactically inept, lack of inspiration, average signings, letting our best players go, rubbish medical team and you want more of this ?!?!?!
time has unfortunately caught up with Arsene and whilst im appreciative of the trophies, stadium and football we played those times have long gone.

its very easy to say “name someone” but we had never heard of Wenger before he came so there will always be new men to come in. would you of had AvB at Chelsea even though you never heard of him. how about the Braga coach or Paul Lambert? or what about the Dortmund coach – led them to a very credible league championship. you see there are plenty of credible coaches but until you get your head out of the sand and dont be afraid of change then you will not accept any coach. change can be good

Unai Emery would probably be my first choice at the moment.

The drawbacks are that I don’t know if he speaks english and that he probably won’t leave Valenica.

Jurgen Klopp is clearly a talented manager

Van Basten and joachim loew would also be worth considering but are unlikely to want the job.

Alternatively we could give Dennis a few seasons of managing Ajax (he probably will do eventually) and see how he does.

We probably can attract big name managers financially considering the current manager is the best paid person at the club earning over £6,000,000,000 a year or roughly 120k per week. Not surprising to see he is at the very top of his strict wage structure.

Strange I thought Arsenal were ahead of their times, new stadium, free flowing football, manageable debt, Youth Academy, that attracts some of the worlds best youth players.

The only thing that has changed in the last 6 years are the Billionaire Club owners that have totally destroyed football.  You can’t compete against them unless you want to lose £100 millions per season.

Same old discussion surrounding the mythical man, boring boring nosense, as a rival fan just answer me one bloody question ?
when George Graham was winning titles it was not about playing attractive football it was about winning trophies !, now suddenly it is about football and winning nothing is fine..you lot don’t half make yourself look daft at times…have an ethos and follow it through thick and thin but dont try eating the cake and the cherry because people lose respect for you very quickly…for the record Wenger should go there are plenty who could replace him who are doing great jobs elsewhere but until they are faced with the challenge who knows how they will shape up ..Ancellotti, Blanc, Moyes, Hiddiink, Mourinho, all fit the bill, gone are the days of the spectacled genius being ahead of everyone else, the vieira’s, Henry’s etc are no longer a rarity, they are at Chelsea, United, City, Spurs and everywhere else now, nothing rare about signing a Ramires, nothing rare about signing a Walker..move him on and fast and let the tears flow for his daft followers..

I definitely see envy there. Mourinho and probably Ancelotti, great as they are but are they as great in the Prem league without sugar daddy, maybe the others could do as well or better but still a gamble.

BTW, what genius’s have Spuds got? Sorry, not being unkind and yes you’ve had a better start than us but I’m not ready to throw in the towel.

On a footnote, Bentley (who once stated he was a spuds fan at AFC) and got his dream move now regrets it, grass….greener and all that, the facts speak for themselves, jufge us at the end of the season, I’m confident of finishing above you, not on current form of course but there’s a long way to go.

SOME supporters Bigsy, not all. I’ve supported the club for 40 years, seen some tight victories and classy ones and given a choice would prefer to win “looking good” but realistically you take what you can get.

Winning is pleasurable but winning with a flare is exciting throughout the game as well as the glory of the victory. Given a choice I’d rather watch an Arsenal team that play attacking football than a defensive element. Of course, I don’t want to see the leaky defence we have endured for some time but don’t want a total bus parking outfit hitting on the break once or twice a game.

To be fair to Bruce Rioch, he did leave the club in a better situation.  In context, I don’t think Rioch gets enough credit.  Yes, he was only in charge for one season and I’m sure if he’d been there longer he would have most likely sold Rose, Harper, Clarke, etc sooner or later anyway but players such as Merson had made marked improvements under him.  And yes, he fell out with Ian Wright but let’s be honest, Wrighty wasn’t the easiest person to get on with from the sounds of things.  A lot of other managers would have most likely had the same problem, same goes with having issues with the transfer budget.  But all managers have cycles in the same way players do- by the time Graham was dismissed it was clear judging by the club’s league position and the state of the squad that he was out of ideas.  Rioch may not have been the man to ultimately take the club forward but he did what he could with the time that he had.

Look, forget all the name calling crap and just try to have an adult debate.  Wenger HAS been good for Arsenal – no question about it.  But all his achievments are rooted firmly in the past, and that’s an undeniable fact.  Now, all the time we were getting into the Champions League everybody seemed fine with not winning anything.  But that’s not going to happen this year, so how long should we tolerate Wenger for?  The good football has gone, at the moment we look a totally disjointed side with no heart or passion.  yes that was a good result on Saturday but does anyone really believe that will propell us to the title?  Spurs are up on Sunday and I don’t think we’ll get a result there.  They are a much better balanced team than us at the moment.  If we do turn them over then I will gladly hold my hands up and say I was wrong.  I just can’t see it happening.  People have pointed out that when Wenger does spend big (over ten million) those buys have proved to have been poor.  But then isn’t that more to do with the manager’s lack of judgement rather than the price tag?  I mean, who in their right mind would have ever paid ten million pounds for Francis Jeffers…Fergie?  Things are wrong at Arsenal, from top to bottom.  How do you solve them?  God only knows.  But one thing is for sure, you cannot find an anwser by pretending a problem does’nt exist. Yes the board have much to anwser for.  But if a lack of funding is an issue all Wenger has to do is stand up and say ‘back me or sack me’.  He says nothing.  And I would like to know why.

How soon we forget after a couple of iffy wins.

What your argument cannot explain or excuse is Wengers inability to win the Carling cup against birmingham of all people. And worse his failure to pull us out of relegation form after the Carling cup, with us losing to lesser and less wealthy teams as we still are. You can’t blame the billionaires clubs for that.

Job one for a great manager is to get a team out of a funk. He failed at a time when we still had the league to play for and we still had Fabregas. Our relegation form continues and we lose against teams who have no way near our resources or international bench.

I can understand us losing against Chelsea. Man U and City who spend big . You can’t excuse losses to the likes of West Brom. Your analysis completely fails.

You skate over our record of most goals conceded from set pieces that is a record a team of our stature should never have and also cannot be explained or excused. Wenger failed to fix that also-of course we need a defensive coach, just watch the Olympiakos game. A nervy sketchy win with plenty of non marking in the box.

He has failed and most managers would be long gone. You are living in the past and finding reasons for blind belief ignoring key facts. That can get us in a lot of trouble.

Prediction: we will finish 6th/7th and win no trophies. Van Persie will leave (why stay?) Wenger will have no choice but resign in May.

How do you justify or excuse that? You can’t.
