Usmanov shares bid may spark power struggle at Arsenal

Alisher Usmanov wants to increase his Arsenal shareholding in move that could spark a boardroom power struggle at the Emirates.

The Daily Mail claims that the Uzbeki billionaire , the club’s second biggest shareholder, is trying to increase his stake to 30 per cent. He owns just over 29 percent but will write to the club’s smaller shareholders this week, offering to buy shares at £14,500 each.

And the paper points out that reaching the 30 per cent threshold would make Usmanov eligible for the Premier League’s owners and directors test and passing that would clear the way for him to secure a seat on the  board. But whether Usmanov – who is rated as the 35th richest person in the world – would be offered a place on the Gunners’ top table remains to be seen.

The paper adds that Stan Kroenke will be quizzed by Gooners when he attends the club’s Annual General Meeting on October 27.

Meanwhile, the Expres says Arsenal will attempt to open contract talks with their top players in November amid fears rival clubs are already eyeing moves for the likes of striker Robin van Persie in January.

And the Mirror claims and Arsenal are interested in Plymouth’s 16-year-old winger Matt Lecointe, who is rated as “the next Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain”.
Another report claims Arsenal are facing competition for Lille midfielder Eden Hazard from Real Madrid, according to the Belgian’s agent.

this may be the start of the best news we could have. By all accounts this guy is big into the FOOTBALL club..not as appears kroenke is,just interested in making more money.
As for the fans that like this way at the moment with the excitement that the self-sustaining model obviously gives them, lets hope they wont be too disappointed if there was a sudden cash injection that meant we could keep outr best players and buy world class players as well. Of course that depends on if and how usamanov works with the board….but it gives me a lift just considering the possibility.

its a stated aim of usmanov for arsenal to pay dividends to the shareholders, so why does anyone think he is not in it for the money, thank god kroenke has stuck with the rule of previous boards and put all profits back into the club and not out to shareholders.

My biggest question is…does Uzmanov watch our matches?/ ie; is he a fan?  Stan is obviously not and to him its just another investment…..If Uz is a fan too then I hope he will suceed and Stan will sell him a lot of his shares. This way we may get a board that is interested in the team as well as the share price!

if you follow the news uzmanov is not at all happy with the state of our club’s current form and i feel for football clubs to do well you need an owner that is passionate about his club winning silverware and care about the belief and also felling of the fans of the club which i think is what is lacking at arsenal. I feel that this man can bring this to arsenal, reunite the fan and supporters and not what we have now sitting at the head of affairs. the truth is that arsenal need a mixture of the two making profit and winning silverware.

      Dinamo Moscow is his”first love”.

Who knows what he feels after that but I suspect the feeling is similar to the way many people in England quite like Barca because they play nice football and win stuff (but without the winning in our case).

So no he probably isn’t a fan, but really that doesn’t matter.

I read that about 3 years ago mate and since then there have been many arguments about whether its true or not. It’s the same story with the rest of the allegations surrounding him.

But it still doesn’t matter who he “follows” because as I said he “supports” Dinamo Moscow.  I watch barca matches because I admire the way they play but I am most certainly not a fan.

He is at least a football fan. As in football, not soccer as Kroenke would know it. In my book this means Usmanov understands what Arsenal Fans are feeling and have a better idea about what we want. He’ll know about the players throughout Europe, he’ll know the real differences between clubs and he’ll understand the impact of Derby loses because Moscow will have a Derby match too. Kroenke is the owner, what he does is down to him. He doesn’t have to understand anything other than profits if that’s his thing, does he?

From a football perspective, Usmanov will be a “football fan” … Kroenke will be a business man.

I warn some of you who now join the greedy ‘can’t beat them join them’ wagon that I have some very very good Chelsea pals who have seen titles, and now the double and would give their right arm to have it back to how it was, be very very careful what you wish for here, Arsenal FC has been the model club for as long as I have been alive and won trophies doing things the correct way, with morals, good business and most importantly the thing that has always got up my nose as a rival fan with TRADITION !..finding yourselves being shut out of the emirates and watching japanese tourists clicking away from the front 6 rows and getting shoved to the back of the ticket queue is not funny when you have built up a bond with a club and got it to where it is now…careful people, you are not football fans like Man City or Chelsea who have craved success since day 1 and had nothing in 100 years..you are a club who has had everything they have and more..this really could ruin Arsenal FC as you know it, by going down the dirty grubby oil rich route !
temptation is of course there, but I would not swap anything we have at Spurs and the way things are progressing to be a Chelsea fan right now…no way and I would advise you lot to have a similar view !

You are correct my friend.  Newmarket has had to change with the times with the old owners dying off and new overseas investors (?).  Ferguson, Michael Owen or Redknapp are not real horse-racing people.  Channon is and Michael Owen may be?

As for Mr A B Usmanov, he is in the Russian fencing and his wife, Mrs Viner, is in charge of the Russian Gymnastics.  Mrs Viner’s motto is, I love you, I’ll kiss you and I’ll kill you!  In other words not quite the Olympian ideal.  That is why I would like the Russian Gymnasts to have the facilities of London Colney available to them for the London Olympics.  I can see the sparks fly between Mr Wenger and Mrs Viner.

Renaming London Colney into a nice Russian name should be worth £100 millions over 10 years at the very least.

Mr A B Usmanov’s own media sources are silent and I would not rely upon anything written in the Dail Mail or The Mail on Sunday.

so chelsea fans want to be back in mid-table do they?……also there is no comparison between the 2 clubs..arsenal earn more money than chelsea anyway so the cash injection form a sponsor isnt too significant for us as it is for chelsea.
In other words we could handle a modest 100 million investment in our team. That investment would probably secure champs league which earns us part of the money back! simples!!!
At the moment this club is being run tighter than scrooge on a tight day!….absurd attention to pennies!…as is commonly said penny-wise pound foolish!

The point I am making is it depends on your love of a football club, yours is clearly about success as it appears in the first line ‘mid table’.. to me when I walk to WHL with my boy it is still the same place where I walked hand in hand with my father, my forehead behind trapped between someones arse and a wall, with the odd shout of ‘hotdogs, hamburgers’ and not realising I had stepped in Horse shit until it was too late, the click of the turnstiles and walking up the stairs to get into my seat and to be honest the result was rather unimportant , it was a ritual and to this day I still sit there thinking about friends and family who are no longer with us..spurs is more than results..it is a pilgrimage to the rightful home, if you want to throw away your chances of reliving that each week it is up to you..but by the sounds of it you wouldn’t have a clue what I am going on about..only true fans would know that feeling !..results are meaningless in the bigger scale of things.

Not sure how many people think of football as a religion… It’s quite difficult to feel that way unless you actually go to the stadium I think. highbury was my church. Emirates? Not there yet but I still get to worship the same idols. I’ve always found that religion and obsession with football is a closer analogy than most people realise.

like all the russian oligarchs he is in it for an ego trip.

Getting 30% will change nothing because he has already been out manouevered by Kroenke who succeeded in getting the board on side years ago.

Everything at the club is in kroenke’s hands and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

Not sure why this is a story now considering he’s been hoovering up shares from small shareholders for about 2 years now. Maybe he should approach Rangers FC…

The reason this is a story: If Usmanov can get over 30% he will gain the right to look at the books, the accounts, all the wages of all the staff and the wage structure itsxelf. He will have the right to see all the revenue from every commercial venture and most importantly the transfer money.

This will mean he can tell us what is REALLY going on behind the scenes. He doesn’t have to pander to Wenger or Kronke, so he’ll tell it how it is. This is why it’s news.

When the excuses are made by the club, Usmanov can add his input and let us see the REAL reasons. This will let everyone see the root of the problems.

I feel quite excited about it. Either we’ve been lied to for years or we’ll discover the club is being run in the best way it can. The only way we’ll find out is if Usmanov gets over 30%.  He is working his way through the register and this raises a smile, if only for the way it can potentially shake things up.

If we were relegated in May, I would still love my club and never support another. The politics behind the scenes amuse me. I’m grateful to Wenger for what he’s achieved, but the only reason I want him to stay is because his leaving would change nothing besides for the worse – plus I can’t think of a single person who could replace him. He’ll be gone one day. So will Ferguson at United. Things change and sometimes for the better, sometimes not. As an Arsenal fan, I’m used to disappointment … and I’m used to seeing change … I’m just waiting for it.

I hope he ends up owning the club. Usmanov has one thing on his mind: glory!

That’s what the fans and players want, that’s what the Emirates needs. His pockets will help out the clubs already healthy finances nicely. If he takes charge, then Dein’s back in the mix and Arsenal will steer itself in the right direction off-field for the first time since he left. Players will come, so will results, and the club will lift.

It’s not like anything good has happened since what’s-his-face came into the frame anyway. It’s time for the big man to take over and outdo Abramovich as the King of London Football! A football club is something you love and are fanatical about way above winning anything,
Look the point I am making quite clearly I feel but will simplify it further is this..

You sign up for a quick get rich scheme route to the top of the prem and Arsenal FC may just never be the same club again…

On the contrary, no one is suggesting that you start loving a club because they are winning. But part of supporting a club is sharing in its success, feeling miserable when they lose and willing them to do well. If you aretelling me that we should never aspire to achieve, then I would disagree with you.

If lineage was a measure of success then we will be half way
back to feudalism and a society where what you are is determined by who your
great grand dad was. Our previous successes were sources of celebration and
much happiness. But you seem to imply that our blip was just a season long. We
have not won anything for the past 6 years and what’s more, we have gone
            backwards even further.

As things stand now, we seem to be on a hiding to nothing.
Sure we are developing youth. If any of these young men shows any kind of
promise, they will be off to pastures green before you can say ‘please stay’.
Just look at Nas and Fab. This means that we will continue to have a high
turnover of exceptional players, with only the average and not so average
players here for the long term.

All valid points, answer me one question..when Arsenal were winning titles under George Graham were Arsenal the highest paid team and the number 1 choice of players moving to this country ? I think you will find it was Liverpool, Man United and even Everton back then…Arsenal won the league on team spirit and organisation…with home grown talent…if things are failing it is not all down to cash most of it is down to Wenger…you may not have the most gifted players these days but I guarantee a better tactician would have you much tougher to beat and quite a force…team spirit is everything and wenger is incapable of making that happen these days…he only succeeded with the invincibles because they were all french and he got a side together of mates..that you and I could have made a success with..you don’t need to drill and repeat passing movements to Pires and Henry on a daily basis..

I would agree that the manager shares in the blame for our current situation. He has become an accountant rather than a football manager. But this is also in part down to the board. They have co-opted him into the role.

Did we reallly truely become the number one destination for foreign players? ….may be French players for the simple reason that AW is French, but not players of other nationalities? If this is the case, why are we haemorrhage exceptional players every year .. even French players?

Oops! I dodged your original question. We did not pay the highest wages when Graham was winning for us. At the same time, one must admit that the disparity in what the players get paid today has widened significantly and any any club with deep pockets are able to attract elite players.

you honestly leave your home to see your team hoping that they lose? If no is
the answer, then to some degree, you too are a glory supporter. Equally, you do
not leave to support another club just because your team has lost. Rather,  you try to pin point the problem with your
