Van Persie saves the day

Arsenal moved into the top half of the Premier League table for the first time since the opening day of the season with a nervy 2-1 win over Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium.

Robin van Persie scored after just 29 seconds to give Arsenal the lead, but Sebastian Larssonlevelled for the visitors just after the half-hour mark with a trademark free-kick.

Van Persie then struck in the final 10 minutes with a free-kick of his own to seal a vital win for the Gunners that lifts them up to 10th.

Sunderland’s fourth league defeat of the season keeps them out of the relegation zone on goal difference alone, but there was a long period in which they looked good value for a point.

For the first half an hour, the Gunners played perhaps their football of the season as they terrorised the hapless Black Cats. Led by captain Van Persie, who looked in fearsome form, Arsenal had free rein on their own patch.

The first 30 second appeared the set the tone.Tomas Rosicky put his weighted pass into the path of Gervinho, who surged forward before squaring a pass across the edge of the box for Van Persie. The Dutchman turned the ball on to his right foot and fired a clinical low finish past Simon Mignolet. It was Van Persie’s sixth goal in 11 Arsenal appearances this season, and the quickest Premier League strike of the season so far, beating Anthony Pilkington’s strike after 49 seconds for Norwich on Saturday.

Van Persie was simply unplayable for a Sunderland defence devoid of organisation or leadership. He almost doubled Arsenal’s lead in sublime fashion when his chip came back off the far post after an exquisite turn past Kieran Richardson.

Sunderland were being run ragged, but they were given a flash of hope when Stephane Sessegnon – operating as a lone front man with no recognised striker in the visitor’s starting line-up – beat the offside trap down the left. The Benin midfielder cut a pass back into the box, but Alex Song tracked back to intercept.

Still, that was enough to remind both sides that the gap was just a single goal, and Larsson wiped that deficit just minutes later with a dead-ball strike that was impressive even by the Swede’s own high standards.

As Arsenal reacted to that equaliser by retreating within themselves, a buoyant Sunderland could have taken the lead. Larsson nudged Carl Jenkinson off the ball with ease and sent Sessegnon free to put in a cross, only for Wojciech Szczesny to block Lee Cattermole’s close-range header. Young midfielder Jack Colback then spurned a chance to open his Sunderland account just before the break when he volleyed Larsson’s cross over the bar.

A niggly start to the second half saw referee Howard Webb show several yellow cards, while Arsene Wenger replaced left-back Kieron Gibbs with Andre Santos just five minutes after the restart.

The highly influential Rosicky send Van Persie free inside the area, and the striker’s shot at the near post was blocked by Mignolet’s boot with Gervinho waiting for the cross.

Andrei Arshavin came off the bench and almost scored a sublime goal when he slalomed through three Sunderland defenders only to fire a low shot just wide of the far post.

It was up to Van Persie to settle the affair for the Gunners with 83 minutes on the clock. The Dutchman placed the ball for a free-kick by the right-hand corner of the penalty area, and he curled his shot over the wall and inside the near post for his 23rd goal in 25 Premier League appearances in 2011.

Sunderland kept the Arsenal defenders honest in the closing stages, in particular substitute Ji Dong-Won who had the ball in the back of the net but was offside when he did so.

Arsenal’s next fixture is Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Marseille, while Sunderland face a visit to Bolton next Saturday in what already looks to be a key clash in the relegation battle.

How lucky is it that you lot have Van Persie ? jesus christ talk about save you..I honestly thought Arsenal were the worst I have seen them this season today..Jenkinson is just apalling and this was Sunderland for christ sake who Norwich City battered 2 weeks ago…Redknapp once again demonstrated that he is clueless and after spending all summer fighting to keep Modric he plays him out wide just to accomodate fat arse VDV, and then afterwards admits it was a mistake again, well that is 2 games Harry that you have weakened us..once playing VDV out wide against Arsenal and now Modric there against Newcastle..grow some testicles and pick our best team for once..what the hell are both our managers playing it ?

My boy is 9 and he reckons Jenkinson became a Gooner because he walks his dog on the same park as Wenger, and I think he may have a point..apalling and I shouldn’t be moaning really Newcastle is never an easy place to go but both teams in Nth London need new managers..I just hope we get Ancelloti before you do !…13 points from a possible 15 and RTK knows I am waiting for the fixtures we discussed to come to an end..:-)

How is it unlucky to have Van Persie? We’re still a top club and that was definitely not a bad performance. We dominated ffs and whilst possession isn’t good enough to win a game it’s certainly harder for the other team if they aint got the ball!!!

For the record Jenkinson, who was thrust into first team action a lot sooner I imagine than Wenger had planned had a better day with some promising attacks, his confidence was definitely higher yeaterday. Now why is he covering for Sagna, ah yes because he was taken out of the game by that freak Ekotto who wasn’t even watching the ball when he assaulted Sagna.

You are watching a different team mate to me, Steve Bruce is on the verge of the sack and they were forcing sczezny into point blank saves at the Emirates and very much in the game until the 82nd minute..
How Jenkinson found his way into the team is irrelevant he is deemed good enough because he is in the squad and if you think giving the ball away on the half way line continuously is good defending then you are wrong, I also witnessed him run into the opposing half and not once did he find a red shirt from a cross in fact I cannot recall one beating the first defender..
Without Van Persie you would be bottom 3 FACT.

Shit lucky to win that yesterday given the humpteen chances a poor side like Sunderland created, just being honest if you think that performance is good enough to beat Stoke this weekend then you are wrong !

I must have watched a different game then. Of course you can always find the negatives if that’s what you’re looking for but the positives are there, same as the stats, yeah they never lie but again you find what ever it is you’re looking for.

How many point blank saves did Szczesny make? I expect him to have to earn his crust now and again, NO team goes 90 minutes+ without a few hairy moments.

Look I know we’re not great at the moment and there’s room for improvement but I’m sick of the total negativity. United were struggling a few years ago and Fergie’s name was being called rotten by some of their supporters AND the media of course but they turned it around and so will we.

As for Stoke I definitely and honestly believe we can win that one, not blind faith either.

I’m not falling out over it we clearly have differtent views on the game so that is fine, I did not see as many positives as you at all to be honest, a win was the positive, I thought Arsenal gave the ball away continually, I thought defensively they were awful and would have been punished if Sunderland had a forward and were not a team which has won 1 in their last 20 odd games..again you were unfortunate enough to lose a player injured, and the usual culprits skulked around the pitch without doing any damage to the oppostion, walcott , rosicky etc, Van Persie is looking good but how long can he keep performing on his own ? this is now  a very hostile test in Marseille for some average players who are not exactly on form.
I am critical when it needs to be regardless of that being Spurs or Arsenal I have never been one to fudge over rubbish performances, because we all know decent teams punish those errors that you were making yesterday..

            sorry just being honest !

I don’t doubt your honesty, we obviously view AFC from a different perspective, I am a fan for forty years still totally in love with the club so I will tolerate more than a clinical perspective that I believe you have, no offence intended but realistically as much as you are a fair “opponent” with good balanced judgement you do not love the club.

What does annoy me is the injuries we get, imagine if Sagna, Vermaelen and Wilshere were on the pitch Saturday and yes that is the problem with our lack of quality in depth, hopefully that will right itself soon, though not soon enough.

All very fair points mate, you have had some rotten luck with injuries but the re occuring ones must have been there in each individuals history be it elsewhere in Vermaelens and RVP’s case and perhaps Jack is just bad luck I don’t know too much about his injury record as a kid, But someone at the club I am assuming has cocked up if these injuries have been re-occuring throughout there time prior to joining Arsenal..and we are just as guilty of it ..what idiot signs Woodgate for christ sake ?

I’m getting really fed up with DISQUS, it keeps refusing my user name and password.  When I try to change either it won’t let me.

I’m going to find a different Arsenal website and post my comments there.

I was at the match again today, and I have to say it was squeaky bum time…. You know Arsenal play well for 25 – 30 Minutes and then take their usual break because they think they are the Arsenal of old that can win 4, 5 or 6 nil……..

Im not sure what it is but we always have a period in the game when we give stupid fouls away and then concede.

We have only one match winner at the moment, and that is RVP…… We need something else / another approach…. It isnt a surprise that since the start of 2011 RVP has scored the most goals of any player…

We have to keep RVP, and add other serious threats…. As for the post for the Spurs chap, it looks as if Newcastle will be up there aswell this season.

Rosicky is always injured and showed poor form at the start of season. Ramsey too has been poor the last couple of games but don’t forget was out a long time with a horrific injury.

Van Persie saves the day god help us if he gets injured. A weak bottom aide Without a real striker Sunderland still managed to score two one being offside.

For large parts of this we made them look pretty good.
    Not convincing.

Yes, we are relying on RVP but most teams tend to rely on or have a top striker, as for stating Dunderland scored two that’s desperation in attempting to further demean this team.

For me, for large parts of the game WE looked good.

Convincing, no but the result stands. Better than looking good and losing (as we have) is to win unconvincingly whilst improving.
