Wenger sounds fed up

If a lack of confidence is a problem with this current Arsenal team it’s easy to see why, going from Wenger’s latest comments to the French media.

Back in the days when there were few cooler than Wenger and he came out with his ‘prettiest wife’ comments, he unsurprisingly seemed better able to command respect from those around him. The media, who have turned on him in recent years, used to love him. Whether this is his own making or not is for another day.

It is understandably draining having to deal with questions of crisis from the media in every interview these days, and certainly over the summer when half the squad wanted to leave. But it sounds to me like Wenger needs to show everyone who’s boss again. He has allowed himself to be bullied for too long by the press over here and could do with making a stand not too dissimilar from Fergie, who didn’t speak to the BBC for something like six years; now the media fear the United boss, and would not dare treat him in the same way.

And the same goes to being bullied by the players. Frankly, it’s not Wenger’s problem if Cesc Fabregas’ dream is to play for Barcelona. While the Nasri situation was difficult due to the fact that we would obviously lose him for free in a year’s time, Fabregas had years remaining on his contract and should not have been allowed to force a move. Wenger could learn from Harry Redknapp here, who absolutely maintained from the beginning of this summer that Luka Modric would not be sold, even though the player himself made it perfectly clear he wanted to move to Chelsea. Modric is still a Spurs player now and his desire to leave has not affected his performances. Why? Because he has a manager who would not tollerate it.

However, I have to give him a hard time on some points. He does himself no favours when he claims players leave Arsenal for Man City for financial reasons only:

“Frankly, if you compare what Manchester City have won in the past and what Arsenal have won, then you don’t go to Manchester City to win titles. Players go to Manchester City because they pay much better than Arsenal.”

Talking about history in the sense of hundreds of years is a ridiculous point to make. The fact is, City finished above us last season and actually won a trophy, which hasn’t happened here since 2005. How he can claim you’d choose Arsenal over Man City for the prospect of winning trophies is beyond me. A look at the current league table would back that up as well. Nasri has swapped 10th place for 1st place.

The money of Chelsea wasn’t exactly a problem back when Arsenal were winning trophies every season. When Abrhamovic first bought the Blues they showed some interest in the likes of Vieira and Henry, but there was no way they were going to get them because Arsenal were title favourites. In fact if you look at Chelsea’s first few signings in the Abrhamovic era, they were all big fish in small ponds kinds of players: Damien Duff from Blackburn, Wayne Bridge from Southampton, Joe Cole from relegated West Ham, Geremi from Middlesbrough and Adrian Mutu from Parma. Big names didn’t go to Stamford Bridge until some silverware was won.

Robin van Persie is the star of this current Arsenal side, and Wenger needs to start showing a bit more ambition if he wants to keep him. Money will only be a factor in the sense that it will need to be spent on players who can provide the Dutchman with more assists than the brainless Theo Walcott.

I'm 23-years-old and currently living in Bristol, studying to be a journalist. I've been hooked on Arsenal since I was about 10, and as much as I sometimes wish I could stop, I can't give them up. Favourite player of all time would have to be Patrick Vieira for the sheer passion with which he played the game.

Exactly the comment I made on an earlier post well done for putting it right and being honest about the stupid comment he made regarding City and Success.

However it was translated makes no difference, at the end of the day money buys success, I know you stated it earlier as did I recently but football is getting to be less in my importance strangely more so since city became rich.

Historically Arsenal are superior to city and Wenger is right about Nasri, how could they be more attractive without big money, nobody knows who’ll be up there at the end of the season, it’s a fair assumption that Utd will be there but before their sugar daddy experience it was unlikely city would too so in a roundabout way he’s right.

    Mark Brus,

Is your sole purpose in writing for Arsenal Insider to denigrate the manager?

If you can find nothing constructive to say, and you haven’t so far, then I suggest you stick to music.

im sorry but this whole artcile is ridiculous… you make no valid points your just choosing parts of the interview to castrate wenger…. one season does not turn man city in to us… yes they have money but no history.. if arsenal and man city had the same finances would nasri have left.. no cesc always was going even if we offered him 300,000 a week he is spanish he is from barca.. you dont deserve to write on this site

wenger said players join man city for the money… that is the truth.. with nasri we would have been stronger, he completely wanted more money thats the only reason he left.. why go to a club knowing you will play 50% less games and not be as important to the team.. its all about money, nasri has lost so much respect in english football

Might I politely suggest that Wenger knows more about the real reasons behind the Nasri departure than outsiders?

    You silly little boy!

Where is the comment about “hundreds of years”?  How many league title have ManCiteh won?   How many FA Cups have ManCiteh won?  Have ManCiteh ever won a European trophy?  If any one is making tired comments it is you, dumbbo!

Now if you had asked why the increase in the number of employees in The Arsenal has increased, you would be making a fair comment.  The Property side of the business is just about to dwindle to zilch!  Why the increase of 28 in the Admin staff?  Maternity/Paternity leave?  Or Empire building by Ivan Gazidis.

As for Ferguson, his family were taking their “entitlement transfer fees” from Manure before the club became ManIOU.  Obviously smarter than ‘arry Redknapp was with the Redknapp offshore transfer account!

British is best racist, I would like think British should be best at the game we bloody invented at every single level, despite cooking many a curry and having a real knowledge on them I would still have to have half an ear cocked if a woman from Delhi was explaining to me how they make theirs, I hope this gives you an indication of how I like to live my life and what matters ! ha ha

Personally I don’t bloody care about who went to Man C, what I care about is the lack of funds to buy replacements and the fact we should have had our finger on the button ready this summer. We didn’t and now we’re paying the price. And I will emphasise the fact that for many seasons we have been told the funds were there when they obviously were not! Looks like we will have to get used to being a mid-table team besause Arsenal will not change the wage structure like the top echelon are doing. Not that i’m saying it’s right to “keep up with the Jones’s”. We just gotta keep up with the rest of them…

this season its man city to abuse..seasons before it was chelsea…..i suggest those that sneer down at city are like the kids that sneer at the lad thats got the best bike and make excuses as to why they wouldnt ride it,
Nasri left because of an absolutely transparent lack of ambition by wenger primarily. Money is only a factor..RVP has made comments that he isnt happy with the duds he has to carry to scrape results. RVP is arsenal through and through..if he wants to leave you can rest assured it isnt money as wenger conveniently blames for the potential exodus.
Wengers’ spin is so predictable…comparing man citys trophy cabinet now!…wait a few years and then compare wenger!
WENGER OUT…he is clearly deluded and out-of-touch

Spot on, mate.  I’m sick of the ‘money’ excuse, it’s Wenger’s get of jail card time and time again.  You can build a decent team   without trying to compete financially with City.  Of course we can’t compete with them for the top players, trying to do so would be finacial suicide, Wenger’s right there.  But there are better players out there than Djourou, Rosicky, Mertasacker, Chamak, Diaby (when he’s fit) and the like.  I have to agree that Wenger’s had his day.  He’s been a fantastic manager for us but now he seems to have lost his drive.  I think he needs a new challange.  If he stood down at the end of the season I think it would be good for him and the club.  And I’d like to see Anchiloti and Wilkins take over.

        Aren’t you contradicting yourself?
You rightly say that a decent team can be built on a lesser budget than city, then you say there are better players out there than Rosicky, Mertesacker etc but surely then you are looking at the na$ri type who cost a lot more, that type would benefit us more obviously but at what cost.

We have to be run financially secure but at the same time we need success and despite rumours to the contrary I believe Wenger is aware of this and not ignoring it as is reported continually and yes I agree he has his flaws I just hope he is addressing them but not publicly which is why he often gets slated.

You’ve made a lot of sense from a nonsense situation brought on by My Wenger.

He philosophises too much that he sometimes confuses falsehood or make-believe with reality! Get a grip Mr Wenger and do again what you used to do best for which you were given the greatest respect from all those who would now rubbish everything you say or do!!

Give this kid a break some of you, he writes from the heart of a lad who only knows success at Arsenal, that gives him an entirely different mentality and concept of Arsenal FC, you can trawl through all the history books you like but unless you have traipsed home after watching toilet like Willie Young, and supported your team through some dark times you cannot possibly have a similar mind set as us older ones (nearly 40 ouch) ..Arsenal like it or not have a large quantity of fans at the core age of following football, 20 – 30 who only know success, go easy on the lad it does make a huge difference, my old man is nearly 60 now and he assures me Jimmy Greaves was a better finisher than anything he has seen in the last 50 years in world football, so we all have our history that we can draw on for comforts when things are bad, and to some fans of Arsenal this is bad ! my boy is nearly 10 and he cannot work out why we have such a rivalry he thinks you are crap and trust me that is bliss to hear after all of the years I have suffered..ha ha

Surely RVP’s goal against Sunderland has to be the fastest prem goal of all time doesn’t it ? ..noone could possibly have scored a goal faster than that..from Bermondsey to Bradford it must be the quickest ..surely it must !

I think these are mis-quotes or at least mis-translations.

The quotes are completely out of character for Wenger who is always on message as far as his propaganda goes, despite how ridiculous some of it sounds, he is still very consistent.
