Ramsey gets late winner for Arsenal

Aaron Ramsey struck two minutes into added time to give Arsenal an important 1-0 win at Marseille’s Stade Velodrome that puts them in control of Champions League Group F.

After a largely dispiriting 90 minutes in which both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances, substitute Ramsey controlled an accidental flick-on from Gervinho and placed his shot low past Steve Mandanda to give Arsene Wenger’s side a fifth win in six games in all competitions.

The result sees Arsenal go top of the group on seven points, while Marseille – who have won only once in 10 league games this season – drop to second with six points. Arsenal may now only need to win one of their final three games to progress to the knockout stages.

The Gunners – looking to shake off their own poor start to the domestic season – were somewhat ragged in the first half at Stade Velodrome, with Alex Song demonstrating as much after only four minutes when he was caught in possession by Andre Ayew and then chopped down Loic Remy to earn himself a booking.

In a game of few chances, referee Damir Skomina ducked a number of big decisions. After 14 minutes, though, he was perhaps correct to avoid giving the home side a penalty when the ball struck Carl Jenkinson on the side, despite Marseille’s players appealing for a penalty, so vehemently in Ayew’s case that he was booked.

Marseille could have conceded a spot-kick of their own when Souleymane Diawara leapt to meet a corner from Mikel Arteta and saw the ball strike his arm. When it popped up into the air and Benoit Cheyrou failed to clear, Robin van Persie’s looping header was then cleared off the line by Diawara.

Arsenal were struggling to find fluency in the final third, as they have done for much of a testing season, and when Andre Santos exchanged passes with Van Persie and then Tomas Rosicky, the Czech midfielder failed to find the Brazilian as he threatened to break through on goal.

Marseille had a touch more guile in the shape of their front three of Ayew, Mathieu Valbuena and Remy, and the third of the trio did superbly well after 31 minutes to keep the ball in play, nutmeg Per Mertesacker and see his shot deflect off Jenkinson and wide of the far post.

Lucho Gonzalez, a transfer target for Arsenal in August, then got his toe to a clever cross from Valbuena but the half ended with another talking point for the match officials as Santos, already booked for a bodycheck on Valbuena, committed a blatant handball but was not booked.

Arsenal lost Jenkinson to injury just after the hour mark as he was replaced by Johan Djourou. With Kieran Gibbs andBacary Sagna already on the sidelines, the blow left Arsenal’s full-back ranks even further depleted.

Whether due to selection issues or general incompetence, the Gunners have struggled for consistency at the back all season and looked vulnerable once again when a dinked cross from Remy fell to Gonzalez. Mertesacker helped ensure he was unable to get a shot away before Song almost gifted Marseille a goal with some sloppy play as he attempted to run the ball clear.

Arsenal enjoyed a rare chance in an insipid second half on 64 minutes. Walcott nipped in ahead of Nicolas N’Koulou as the defender slipped, but he recovered with a desperate challenge that did enough to prevent Walcott from beating Mandanda from close range.

With the game apparently petering out to a disappointing 0-0 draw, Van Persie suddenly sprung to life as he collected a pass from Gervinho and forced Mandanda into a block at his near post.

But as Marseille employed a rather negative approach despite their home advantage, the Stade Velodrome was silenced with seconds remaining of the tie when a cross from Djourou was turned into the path of Ramsey, who converted for his second goal in two games.

Though far from their best, Arsenal kept a clean sheet for the first time in 18 Champions League away fixtures and took top spot in the group with an important win.

Well Done I thought it was a victory you just about deserved, a dreadful game against an awful team that wouldn’t have threatened my sons under 11′s but a win is a win, I would like a few of you honest Gooners to give me an opinion because this is how I see it, Last night Walcott, Arshavin, were there usual waste of time selves, Rosicky was not as bad as recent games and actually put a shift in, but I think you have a real issue now on your hands because Koscielny despite his errors this season is actually starting to shape up and with Vermaelen returning, Mr Mertsacker would not get anywhere near my starting 11 if I was the gaffer, I think he is awful and at times a very poor side turned him inside out and made him look second rate, (a bad bad signing in my view) and then Santos, this guy is so casual and careless he will cost you 10 goals a season he makes Atouba look solid, and I am not sure Arteta will ever be regarded as a good signing, so In a nutshell I am saying I think it was pretty conclusive that Wenger was panic buying, and it would take a decent and concise explanation to make me see otherwise, I am sure it is bloody obvious I am right to even the most ardent Gooner !

However saying that, you do appear to be turning the corner although I am not sure the level of opposition has been that good and the next 2 league games will expose any flaws in this mini revival.

Bigsy most of what you said was accurate though harsh on Mertesacker, not saying he looks really good and he was turned once or twice but also made a few good blocks/tackles, maybe he needs a bit more time as often foreigners do, the exceptions like Chamakh, Arshavin who seem to fit in immediately fizzle out so I’m not unduly worried about Per YET.

I thought Arteta stood out quite well actually last night making some good tackles of his own, sure he’s not Fabregas and probably was a bit of a panic buy but could yet improve even more as he is experienced in the EPL.

Don’t forget as well this was the same team that forced a draw with ManUre and probably like us are having a mare of a start but are full of quality players not hitting the high notes presently, btw I thought their defence was pretty good and this made us THE AWAY TEAM look poorer than we’d like.

        Just an honest opinion.

Like you they lost their best 2 players in the summer so the Man United draw is not strictly on form Berg10 but I didn’t give you much chance last night to be fair and fair play for getting the result.

Yes I think if you google the statements of Mertsecker and Arteta they were completely surprised to be contacted and had therefore not been on the radar earlier in the transfer window. Wenger calls Per ans says something to the effect “perhaps you cam be my guy”…And then Arteta not having time for a physical etc.

So Unbelievably, it looks like Wenger was satisfied with his squad — someone (Kroenke?) told him to get cracking after 8-2.

It may also mean other, better players — Mata — told us to get lost they want no part of a sinking ship.

Bigsy! agree everything you said above, hope Wenger swallows his pride, admits is mistakes and signs couple of real quality players in January. Injury free RVP this season is on top of his game and his movements were superb last night. If only we had Fab, Nasri and Wilshere to feed him that final ball.  Right now without this players, we look just like another mid table team, a far cry from being compared to Barcelona only few months back!

Thought Jenkinson did well last night and with time will get better, Also brings in that tough English fighting mentality that has been missing from the team for last few years.

RVP has been class he is such a good player he really is, Jenkinson surprised me last night he did play very well,I am not sure about him if I am honest he has given the ball away in some stupid areas, but his confidence is growing now as expected with a little run of games and yes maybe it is just him coming to terms with the game at that level, he looks a bit of a pansy though ! always down getting treatment..ha ha

It was a deserved win, Arsenal played with only ten men right from the kick-off.  There was somebody wandering around the pitch with a number 23 on his back but he took little or no part in the proceedings.

I have just checked on Arsenal.com and apparently the number 23 was somebody called Arshavin, what he was on the pitch for I have no idea.

Bigsy has made some valid comments, although his Tottenham bias is so ingrained that they have to be taken with a largish pinch of salt.

Mertesacker was poor only in that he deserves our pity for having to play with a bewildering number of fellow defenders in ever changing combinations.  Last night’s finishing back four was yet another that had never previously played together.  The only thing that we can feel pleased about is that the ever awful Squillaci has not yet made an appearance, it’s time he was shipped out preferably, to the other end of Seven Sisters Road.

As a goodwill gesture I will now pose a little debate of my own for anyone who cares to step up and have a view, we all agree Arshavin, Schevchenko, Rebrov and Pavyluchenko all scored for fun in Europe and have failed miserably in the prem, it is nothing to do with Climate, Physical side of our game (russians are built like brick shit houses) or The pace as they have torn us apart elsewhere for their respective clubs and for Ukraine / Russia..the only player I can call on to show a glimmer of promise from those shores is  Kanchelskis…and he was hit and miss too…what is the problem with coming to England from Russia ? surely it is a step up financially and for your freedom ? or is it a coincidence that both partnered each other and are hopeless on their own ? How Weird ?

They know that a bad game for Russia could mean a long holiday in a Siberian Gulag.

I thought Kancheskis was more hit and miss the Missus.

It is obvious that The Arsenal are still playing training ground exercises in the competetive matches.  To say both sides were poor, is poor judgement in my view.  The difference between the two sides was obvious, the French midfield drove their side on.  The Arsenal midfield on the other hand are still getting to know each other.

Both Roy Keane and Gareth Southgate were top internationalists, have  their coaching badges  to qualify as managers but have proven so far to be at best so-so.  WHO has the coaching badges to qualify as managers in the English Premier League among the myopic and unqualified detractors in this blogosphere?  If Keane and Southgate failed to do the business, why are YOU so certain that YOU know the game better than Arshavin and Walcott?

The Arsenal generally kept the team shape, which is the first rule in any team sport.  Jimmy Greaves stood out as a prime example as a non-team player, but Hurst was a team player.  Berg10 has a better idea than JIN whilst Bigsy should keep to the horses

And the view of 2 poor sides being poor judgement totally contradicts that of Andy Townsend who has far more experience than all of us, so I will continue to write what I see and you carry on writing what you believe, as you have lot have said for years the league table does not lie and both teams are someway down the table of their respective leagues..anyone for a waffle ?

You don’t need coaching badges to appreciate good football or to have an opinion.  Neither do you need coaching badges to recognise poor play or tactics.

I doubt if Herbert Chapman had ever heard of a coaching badge and he didn’t do too bad.

Your examples of Keane and Southgate are hardly ringing endorsements for the FA’s much vaunted badges or they wouldn’t be earning their corn under an umbrella on the touchline talking drivel to the hard done by customers of Sky Sports.

You can’t draw many conclusions from this game between two struggling teams with terrible starts in a half empty stadium. We were anaemic at best.

The real test will be Stoke rugby team. Ramsey has to get that monkey off his back and it’s going to be tough all around. Can we rise to the challenge?

Your comments depend on whether you believe playing at home is a positive advantage, based on that and if so surely we did remarkably well to keep a clean sheet especially as our recent form defensively has been dismal, also as JiN has pointed out earlier the personnel are changing continuously.

If playing at home is deemed to hold no advantage then yes we were poor but I happen to believe it is a positive and therefore the team deserve some recognition.

On the Stoke game, true it’s a stiff test but they play tonight against Maccabi Tel Aviv that will undoubtedly put an extra strain on them and as we have so many years of experience playing in Europe mid week that should give us an edge, admittedly they make several changes but not 11.
