Wenger hints at resting Arsenal skipper Van Persie

Arsene Wenger may rest Robin van Persie for the Premier League clash at the Emirates against Stoke tomorrow.

The Daily Mail this morning claims that even if AW decides to play the skipper it is only a matter of time before he is benched. The papwewr reports that Van Persie is in the midst of an amazing goal-scoring streak after hitting 27 goals in 35 games. But adds he has played in 41 matches in 2011.

AW said: “It is always a difficult decision to make to rest Van Persie, but I will have to do it. We will assess everybody on Saturday morning, then I make the decision for Sunday. I will have to rotate a little bit. Robin’s scored 27 goals in 35 games so you always have that dilemma. But as well you know, you cannot continue like that.”

Wenger says Van Persie is the top striker in England. He added: “Is Robin the best in the Premier League? This season? Certainly, yes.  The last six months, certainly his most efficient. You like Robin because he’s not a typical goal-scorer. When you see him player it never comes to your mind that this guy is a goal-scorer. 

“And then you look at the record and think he’s not only a good player, he’s as well a top class goal-scorer.  For all the other goal-scorers you do the opposite. You think they do not contribute too much to the game but they score the goals. For him it’s the opposite.”
