RTK Blog: RvP smashes Arsenal’s argument for a Self Sufficiency Model

On Arsenal’s official website, there is a Robin van Persie fest. Accolades are pouring in to acknowledge his great run of form and as usual Arsene Wenger is taking the credit for this performance. here are his comments to the media

“Robin has scored 28 in 27 games and still people tell me he is not a centre forward,” Wenger said. “How many goals does a centre forward have to score?

“We are a team that goes forward a lot and players spend a lot of time in the final third.

“His movement is exceptional and his confidence is so high that he takes advantages of all situations. I believe that the captaincy has helped too.”

Listen this is a great day to be a Gooner and if we beat Marseille tomorrow at the Emirates, then the afterglow will last long as will our current unbeaten run. Perhaps the most enjoyable thing about Saturday’s 5-3 victory over Chelsea, was the absolute joy and happiness being expressed by all Gooners. This Arsene Wenger is what UNITY is about. This is more than saying “I told you so” when you are proved right, It is meaning that fans are easily united in success, the challenge is to create that Unity in adversity. RvP was the man of the match easily with his hatrick, but his all round game was intelligent and breath taking. This was not RvP just playing lead striker as AW’s words seem to indicate. This was RvP playing in the hole behind Theo, and Gervinho, then playing lead striker with Theo and Gervinho on the flanks and this was RvP playing midfielder next to Rambo and Arteta. In short, Robin played as he was needed where he was needed and this was partly due to AW but more often than not due to the player himself.

So how can this Unity be maintained? Simple really, and that is for the Club to accept that world class players will deliver and we cannot do without them. It also means that as a club we must now stop selling our best players, and in fact build around them by adding more world class not less. Robin has delayed signing his contract for very good reason, for it would appear that the Arsenal Board and AW do not want to break the wages structure and in so doing they wish to maintain the Self Financing model. Well the only thing that is being financed by this model are Stan Kroenke’s share portfolio and not the eligibility to next year’s Champions League, because what is clear is that UEFA will be powerless to prevent the likes of Real Madrid, and Manchester City having their own way. This is because of the way in which they have used massive funds to further their own interest, way in excess of any new revenue streams thus blatantly infringing the spirit of the FFP rules in my opinion. Chelsea will again run at a loss, but will they knocked out of the Champions League? No way in hell, because UEFA have failed to act against the Spanish league’s blatant unfairness and so have set the precedent for the Court of Arbitration in Switzerland to kick any attempt at holding clubs to account immediately into the long grass for the lawyers to profit from.

What is clear, is that loop holes exist to enable teams to get around the Fair play rules, and it is only down to the clubs to have the gall to exploit them. Arsenal Football Club appears to have double standards, where the requirement and fairness of applying Corporate governance is taken upon a case by case basis in a rather arbitrary manner. It appears from the outside that it is take, take, take, by the Board and give, give, give by the fans. Even the new commercial deals seem heavily weighted upon the requirement of the fan base to spend, spend, spend. I can see no evidence that Stan Kroenke has any intention of putting his own money at risk, neither are there plans to allow anyone to inject equity into the club’s coffers. Yet if Robin van Persie is to be retained, Arsene Wenger and the Board will have to come up with a salary deal that will make RvP the highest paid Arsenal player ever. Frankly who would begrudge our Dutch captain that? He has more than earned it in my view. I have taken the same stance over AW’s position at the club. He should be allowed the right to stay because of his contribution to Arsenal’s heritage, so I will not call for him to be fired. I believe that the very same man who’s stubborness and mis-placed loyalties led us into this mess, is actually the best man to lead us out of it.

Let me explain how. Arsene Wenger can attract high quality players like Eden Hazard and Gary Cahill, but the club appears unwilling to pay the wages demanded by the current spiralling wage inflationary climate. However as I said in earlier blogs, we have the highest paid CEO in the premier league, so clearly we are prepared to spend the money if we want to as a Club. The club will lose £25 million next season for Champions League if we fail to finish in the top four. To pay Robin a 150K per week deal would cost the club £8 million a year, the first three years paid for by qualifying for next season’s Champions League. The interest on the Stadium Loan is around £20 million a year which can easily be paid for by the stadium income of £3 million per game before broadcasting revenues which makes £57 million. The current wage bill would only increase by £4 million a year. If The Board is worried about this, then I suggest the following. Ivan Gazidis use his bonus to fund part of RvP salary, and we stop paying inflated salaries to the youth and squad players who fail to come up with the goods. We should also run high level efficiency savings to reduce the £50million costs that we incur in order to to run a stadium. Perhaps a few less Diamond lounge improvements and more Player squad improvements Ivan? Any new renewed player contract must now be judged upon that player’s return, not upon the market differentials related to Robin van Persie’s new contract. We did it for Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas, and in turn we must do it for Robin van Persie. So as well as smashing scoring records, Robin van Persie has smashed Arsenal’s argument for having a  Self Sustaining Finance Model, but will they heed the call?

Ok I wasn't born and bred a Gooner, but after being in the wilderness, I saw the light and beat a track for Highbury. I have been a season ticket holder for over a decade, and now a life member of the Arsenal Supporter's trust. I hate the Scum and Man U with a passion. Formerly FTK I am co-owner of Arsenalinsider and it's chief blog writer, I can be found having a rant about all things Arsenal, and believe me, you had better listen...

I don’t get it, we spend money we don’t have in a vain attempt to outspend an oil baron (or prince) and the best argument for this is that the guy we DIDN’T pay big money for is awesome? Ok, I’m being slightly facetious, I can see the argument for our owner to pump a little more wealth in and I think we’d see a slight benefit to it too but changing our MO just when it’s starting to look like it might come good (or at the very least, keep us in the right area) seems strange to me.

Of course, we will increase our spending as we renegotiate more of our limiting financial deals and pay off more of our debt, I also think that we’ll see less money spent on the squad players as we improve, so I agree with you on that point but squeezing a little more blood out of a stone isn’t going to help you when there’s someone drawing from an engorged elephant, we need to spend our money more smartly, not just spend more.

Surely this is all about keeping the player though, let’s face it like or not you have never had so much competition for the remaining 2 champ league slots with Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs all being right there, I still maintain Liverpool are weaker but you must not fail in this quest or everything goes tits up in one summer..it really does !

Sure, I think we should offer RvP pretty much whatever he wants, Henry was one of the best paid players in the Premiership and while RvP doesn’t quite have the same style he’s certainly replicating the goals so if he wants 150k, I think we should be willing to pay it to him but if he’s expecting us to shell out 100m in order to get in a few more ‘world class’ players when we have guys like Vermalen/Sagna/Rambo/Wilshere, who are all putting in fantastic performances this season (aside from Jack but I think everyone knows what he can do by now), that could only be bettered by the top names that we simply can’t afford, then he’s gonna be disappointed. Everyone else in the team though, they’ll get paid commensurate to what they do for the team and what they can give to the squad, both now and in the near future.

As I have said before noone at Sheffield Wednesday moaned when Di Canio and Carbone were earning twice what they were, so players do know who is the best they are not daft..your point regarding bringing people in with him is certainly tricky I agree, the problem is and forgive me for this is not a dig it is a fact, you have been at such a height under wengers reign that Arsenal FC is seen as a club in decline, without rubbing it in Man City and Spurs are very much on the up because their starting points were lower, and that is a fantastic tool when in transfer talks..look at Modric …what does he feel now compared to 3 months ago ? they are on the slide no doubt about it at Chelsea..

Why do you think I am having a laugh ?, look at the signs Berg10 and be reasonable, we all sat back and watched Arsenal become a superforce and we saw how it started to happen, that was by being consistent and not losing silly games, Spurs are 19 from 21 points this season in our last 7 games that includes Arsenal and Liverpool (our rivals for top 4) and is the best in the league on form with Man City, unbeaten at home in the prem in london derbies in 4 years and lost 8 times last season, and finished just outside 4th in the final 3 weeks, that is not the old spurs is it ..now providing Harry gets us to beat crap like Wigan at home where we stumbled last season trying to cope with champ league and prem league we will be fine, all ifs and buts but had we beaten Blackpool, Wigan and Wolves last year we would have finished 3 rd anyway and this year we are now not even risking first team players in the wally europa league..yes berg10 I truly believe we have a serious chance and we are a good side mate with 6 dangerous attack minded players, I do think Kaboul and Ekotto are risks but we have played United and City and I don’t see much else challenging us when it matters..with respect you and liverpool failed against us so far, and you know as well as i do that Arsenal fans used to relax if Spurs got off to a good start because you knew we would slip up ..that won’t happen this year you can see that already ! Fulham sunday is a worry then it is crap like west brom and Villa at home..I just don’t see us losing 8 games this season at all.given the fact noone has beaten us outside of the top 2 so far..and that my friend is top 4 material…right now bring united and chelsea to the lane and we win ..

yes I do because Levy is one ruthless Mother F**ker even you lot acknowledge that fact, he will do whatever it takes his treatment, of west ham in the olympic stadium was farcical but it was done purely to a) deny them ownership b) to get Haringey to back us and it worked both ways..I think we also have to accept players talk, in fact we know they do, and I doubt too many at Spurs will be saying Modric has got things wrong after this weekend…if he wanted money (be fair modric is a good player) Inter or AC would beat our salary, I truly believe it is about success and location and Chelsea are just not that good with an ageing side and I am convinced the wrong man in charge..if Mourinho came back then we would lose him no doubt about it, I think players want to work with managers more than a club and Villas Boas just does not cut it IMO.

RTK, Ramsey was the best player on the pitch on Saturday. puts Scott Parker in the shade. 22, the welsh captain and an absolute rising star. Arteta, Song and Ramsey are now becoming such an effective unit, all on the same wavelength and it will take us onwards and upwards. Wilshere is not being missed thanks to Ramsey. Every team needs a good spine. Are there many better at the moment than Sczesny, Kos, Ramsey and RvP? I think not.

Song’s role is often overlooked, he’s always seen as the guy as who gives away free kicks when more often than not it’s covering for some lazy git (like arshavin) who fails to track back puts pressure on Gibbs, Santos formerly Clichy and Song is left to cover and take one for the team. Of course, he’s human and some poor tackles are simply poor tackles but his offensive game has improved a lot this season, could it be he Arteta and Ramsey have a better understanding?

Changing the flattish distribution curve of our wage structure to enable big bucks players to be protected would be a good idea. I thinkk there are 2 arguments here, one on wages, the other on player recruitment.

Wenger’s correct on both. He underspends on acquisition – by acquiring bargains and talented players young, adds value to them, and then either wins with them or sells them for a profit. Normally… Then he overpays on younger, unproven players’ contracts, making them harder to poach. The risk here is finding buyers for the overpaid starlets who don’t make the grade… Denilson, Bendtner, etc.

But when it works – RvP , cesc, TH14, PV4, marc Overmars, Anelka… What other strategy is open to him? The money is never enough…

, Jeffers, Reyes, the Beast, these are ‘made’ players.

But wait, overpaying on Lassagna Diarra didn’t work, and who was it who almost refused to give one DB10 another year’s contract? Invincibles anyone???
AW has caused the problem and it has been added to by Ivan Gazidis employing a cast of thousands or 240+ extra admin jobs last time I looked.
We need to recruit world class talent to our squad, sometimes we have to invest wisely, currently we are getting positions in the PL at the end of the season with the third highest wage bill.. a good return for this money?

sure we have some dead weight, sure we all want world class players etc etc….but after an abysmal start to the season, wenger and the team have picked themselves up (without much help from the likes of you and the media) and it looks like they might have turned this season around. credit goes to everyone at the club! if your still having a little whine after beating chelsea at the brigde and scoring five goals, your are obviously deluded and just see what you already think you know.  UNITY, mate, is about not being a whining little biatch.

RTK you really, really must be on something illegal?

KSE have, are or will putting up the money buy the shares from those who have promised to sell.

Where on earth did the 240 admin staff come from?  That side has gone up from 196 to 220 in the last Accounts.   Why?  The property side of the business almost finished!

Other operating costs are £55 millions which includes The Emirates, London Colney, Hale End Academy and ancillary facilities for the Reserves and Ladies.  Ignoring the Ladies are we, after their great success!   Looking at Manure (no ladies, no separate Academy ?) their other operating costs are on a par.  Looking at that lot that Bigsy used to play for, a smaller stadium, no Academy, no Reserve team and no Ladies are on a par pro-rata in my humble opinion!

With Red  & White having prime access to a newly acquired interest in Disney television and Yahoo, plus ooddles and oodles of roubles and such like; why is Mr Gazidis not tapping into this El Dorado?

As regards the remuneration of RVP, he is the longest serving member of the First Team, captain and of course his last major contract.  As  Darren Dein is RVP’s agent, in view of the 50% Income Tax I would suggest that the contract be back-loaded in the event that the top rate in The Netherlands is much lower.  OR the British Government lowers the Top Rate of 50%.  What is the point of front=loading the Contract if the top rate of Tax is 50%?   It is in the interests of Arsenal Holdings and RVP himself that the contract is back-loaded.  Fabregas is not losing any money because of the lower top rate in Spain, I do not know about any extra tax in Catalonia.

Contracts for the top players in their last major contract is NOT as simple as many people would have us believe.

Bigsy should keep to horses and tell it as it is, whiter than white or blacker than black.  Whie is good and black is bad and do-gooders wonder why there is prejudice among the small-minded.
