Early struggle has been a lesson for us all

It’s not often I take much from Arsene Wenger’s quotes, but something stuck with me in his post-match interview on Saturday.

After a comprehensive 3-0 win over West Brom continued Arsenal’s recent revival, the boss said: “When you see where we came from and how much we have suffered that is a good lesson for us to keep working hard. Not so long ago people were asking me whether or not I thought we would be fighting relegation, so let’s continue to work hard and not forget that.”

Relegation and Arsenal don’t quite go together, but at the start of the season it genuinely didn’t seem so crazy. I think for the players this has been a real wake-up call, and for the fans as well. Those of us, including yours truly, who have complained relentlessly about 3rd or 4th being an underachievement are perhaps now seeing how well Wenger has done to keep us up there despite spending a fraction of the kind of money our rivals can enjoy, and that includes Spurs and Liverpool who have continiously finished below us, never mind Chelsea and the Manchester clubs.

This season, more than ever, we have, on paper, seriously downgraded our team; losing players of the quality of Fabregas and Nasri is not something a lot of clubs could cope with, and yet the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Aaron Ramsey and especially Robin van Persie have taken their game to another level, and although we have all questioned Wenger’s motivational skills on many occasion, his record for getting supposedly inferior players to replace their big name departees is incredible. Let’s not forget that our former club captain and chief playmaker Cesc Fabregas was trusted with replacing Patrick Vieira at just the age of 18. Not many of us thought that was the best idea at the time either. So write off the likes of Song and Ramsey at your peril, and don’t forget we have yet to see the immensely promising Jack Wilshere so far this campaign.

Being crucified for losing a cup final and stuttering to 4th place last season is one thing, but being given the nasty reminder that football does not respect history or reputation with our early struggles this season might turn out to be one of the best things to happen to this group of players. Just because you wear the famous cannon on your chest, doesn’t mean you’re immune to 8-2 defeats, and doesn’t mean you don’t have to seriously up your performance to maintain the standards expected at this club.

It’s good to see that Wenger has used this to motivate his players. Perhaps it was a timely wake-up call for him as well.

I'm 23-years-old and currently living in Bristol, studying to be a journalist. I've been hooked on Arsenal since I was about 10, and as much as I sometimes wish I could stop, I can't give them up. Favourite player of all time would have to be Patrick Vieira for the sheer passion with which he played the game.

put the champagne on ice until

a, you have played Man City
b, you have managed to put a run together without RVP

who is coking out the champagne whether we loose to Mancity or not one game doesnt define a whole season. As for RVP he is our captain and why the hell would want to leave him out maybe if he is injured. Every team struggles without their best players.

Thankyou Mckara. Don’t we pay RVP’s salary? I dont understand why we should be looking forward to putting a run together without him. Is that how you think about your business? You look forward to delivering results without your best formers whom you’ve hired and are paid to deliver results? You sound like a Man City/Chelski fan and no, that’s not a compliment

Bigsy, change the ferking record about playing the mercenaries, the season doesn’t revolve about meeting/beating them.

As for RvP getting injured as you stated earlier, if it does happen we’ll cope, for the simple reason our squad was hastily reformed, I don’t care why, that’s of no consequence now, what’s important is that we’ve coped while settling newcomers in so I’m happy there’s better days ahead as they continue to gel together. Not so long ago you and a few fans ridiculed Jenkinson and a few games later he’s the dogs wotsits.

Perhaps you’re getting jittery as you’re seeing it too, Ha Ha!!

Try putting a run together without Modric…cuz if you expect Parker and VDV to run the middle you will be sadly mistaken

For Arsene Wenger to refer to “how much we have suffered” is a little bit over the top IMO. For example, those who have lost young loved ones suffer, NOT football teams. I’m reminded of a particularly stupid remark by a one-time Liverpool Manager that “Football was more important than life or death”.
Whether we like it or not, football is nothing more or less than a game.

Nicky needs a life he really does. Read Wenger’s comments within context for Christ’s sake. Why do people have to relate everything to loss of life and starving children around the world. How is that within context. The man is talking within context and yes within his context, Arsenal did suffer early on. As a life long gooner, I truly believe the average IQ of our fan base is at the lowest I have ever seen. With clowns like Myles Palmer, who has a gaggle of followers for his silly line of reasoning bereft of logic, it is no wonder every tom, dick and harry considers himself an authority on player-management and talent acquisition. Bloody annoying

Great comment Jaksparrow. Many arsenal fans are genuinely embarrassing. No clue about football. I cringe with some of the comments I see. A lot of fans have been driven away from the blogs because of it. The regulars on here, arsenal fans anyway, are a good bunch who know their stuff.

Well I went to the north london derby in December 2000 and left my Mrs in the latter stages of childbirth, because she was sick of watching me pace up and down moaning about missing the match, so I rushed down from Norwich, so it is certainly more important than Life, as for death I am not sure ..

Mark, are you serious that relegation was a worry for you? Thankfully some of us never even considered it and I’m so glad you’ve finally seen how good Wenger has been to keep us up there on so little for so long but to be fair you were still in primary school when he came to the club.

Morons like Jaksparrow remind me of the Mother watching her soldier son in a passing-out parade. “Look at that”, she said “Our Jack’s the only one in step”.
On second thoughts, I should really spell out the meaning of that tale in words of one syllable, otherwise they will never understand it.

But we are the only team to suffer at the hands of Blackburn and that is cringeworthy. We could be five point better of if Wenger didnt drag his feet all over the place.
