Arsenal First English Club Through To Knockout Stages

A Robin van Persie brace secured Arsenal’s progression from Champions League Group F with a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium.

After a frenetic first half which produced little, Van Persie gave his side a 49th minute lead with a clinical header after fine work out wide from the inspired Alex Song, before the Arsenal captain doubled his tally from close range four minutes from time.

Shinji Kagawa pulled a consolation goal back for Dortmund in stoppage time, but it was an entirely efficient victory for the hosts as they sealed their place in the last 16 of the competition by topping Group F.

Arsene Wenger named an unchanged starting line-up as his side attempted to secure their passage through to the knockout stages withLaurent Koscielny continuing at right-back while the returning Abou Diaby was handed a spot on the substitutes’ bench.

Starlet Mario Goetze, a reported £30 million target for the Gunners, started for the Germans, who needed a win to realistically keep alive their slim hopes of making the second round, and the midfielder was at the forefront of everything in what was a frantic opening.

Arsenal were forced to play on the break for much of the early stages, and Theo Walcottnearly punished the visitors as he surged through on goal to latch on to Aaron Ramsey’s pinpoint through ball, but Roman Weidenfellerwas swiftly off his line and made an impeccable challenge.

Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp had to make two enforced changes in the opening half hour as Sven Bender clashed with Thomas Vermaelen in innocuous fashion and had to be replaced by Moritz Leitner, while Goetze could not shake off an early knock with Ivan Perisic his replacement.

The visitors missed the dynamism of the two midfielders as Arsenal began to dictate much of the play, albeit without being able to muster more than one shot in the first half as the match as a whole lacked a cutting edge.

Aaron Ramsey was typically inventive in the midfield while Walcott posed a threat from the right, but Weidenfeller was frequently on hand to alleviate any danger in the Dortmund half as his side pressed incessantly.

Arsenal made a sluggish start to the second half as first Per Mertesacker was almost caught dallying on the ball by Perisic, before a slick one-two between Kagawa and Robert Lewandowski saw the Japanese midfielder fly through on goal, only for Wojciech Szczesny to make a fine stop with his legs at his near post.

But just seconds later, Arsenal went in front: Song distinguished himself as he jinked his way past two challenges out on the left and dinked a pinpoint delivery to the back post, where Van Persie was on hand to head past Weidenfeller with a clinical finish. It was his 16th Champions League goal for the Gunners.

Gervinho really ought to have doubled Arsenal’s lead on the hour mark as he stole in behind the Dortmund back four to latch on to Ramsey’s precise through ball, but he never looked convincing and dallied long enough to allow Mats Hummels to make a timely last-ditch challenge.

Lucas Barrios was introduced to further bolster Dortmund’s attacking options midway through the second half as Klopp made his final substitution, but Arsenal defended stoutly to restrict the visitors to speculative efforts.

Van Persie capped yet another match-winning display with a close range finish after Vermaelen had expertly flicked on Arteta’s inswinging corner, and his 38th goal in 41 games for the calendar year ensured his side all three points.

Kagawa pulled a goal back for the intrepid visitors in the final minute of play following an aberration from the hosts at the back, but it was nothing more than a mere consolation for the German side as Arsenal were left to celebrate becoming the first English team to seal their place in the last 16 this season.

Alex Song was immense last night. Has shown he is much more than a defensive midfielder. We have a midfield trio now who can all do everything. Plus Wilshere and Diaby also. Good times.

That was the first time this season that Wenger was able to field an unchanged starting eleven.  This team is now a TEAM, not a group dominated by a couple of over-inflated egos.

A good, and very important win, achieved through hard work, togetherness and defensive solidity.

Koscielny gave everything playing in an unfamiliar position he was able to close out the left side of the Borrusia attack and get forward on occasions to support Walcott.  By the time he was subbed he looked absolutely knackered.

At last we have a ‘keeper in who the defenders have confidence, Sczesny is our best since Seaman, less erratic than “mad” Jens.

Vermaelen and the BFG were excellent and Santos just keeps on getting better.

Outstanding poaching by Prince Robin but MotM goes to Alex Song he had a monster game.

    Through to the knock-out stages…again!

Onwards and upwards for the “Mighty Gunners”

Doing what we have done for 12 years consecutively is fantastic. Doing it for one season and then claiming your team is the best and everyone will want to play for you now is laughable and very much the opinion of the low life’s down the road. To come through a tough group with a game to spare is testament to a team which is growing. Mention for Santos also. He is making the position his own now and looks like another shrewd AW purchase.

Great performance but I’m sure we’re going to be told that we were lucky in the first half with the German pressure bestowed on us. Frankly, I prefer to think we played to a plan where we didn’tt panic, defended as a unit and our efforts were rewarded.

The current back four just get better and better and even when Santos was up the pitch Theo was making the tackle in his unfamiliar LB role and to think this team is improving all the time.

I don’t think you were lucky Berg10, you were not lucky at all, but I have to be honest and say Dortmund missed 3 or 4 sitters in the first leg in the first 10 minutes, they were far from convincing last night with some of their finishing, and whilst I accept you appear to have turned the corner , which you have ! no doubt about that, I still don’t think you have played a team who have quality forwards to put you under pressure and take those chances, the last one was Chelsea and they got three,

Stoke are in shit street and tumbling like a waterfall, Sunderland (no decent forwards) , Bolton (struggling) West Brom (not great forwards) Norwich (poor again)  ..Spurs have had a lucky run of fixtures too make no mistake so I am being consistent but you have not played anyone with a decent front line for a while now, and it coincides with all of you talking about this new fresh look to the defence..let’s wait and see if you come through this weekend where they have a couple in Dembele with movement, Johnson with movement, and even the turd Zamora has a bit to his game, if you can do that and then the Man City game in the cup I will be the first to say you are back ! I promise I will, but even the most ardent of gooners would recognise their is an element of truth in what I have written there..and I have kept it fair too !

I would say all teams rue missed opportunities, god knows how many we’ve missed, that aside I do believe that often not enough credit is given to the opposing team applying pressure and negating the situation.

The team we played last evening beat Bayern on the weekend so a more than competent team was put against us, Chelsea scored 3 but we scored 5.

Ah yes, the next game is always the one that will give us the accreditation, come on we’re doing the business, often it’s been the minnows, underdogs or call them what you like that we lose to and how often has their GK had MOTM when playing us.

Of course there’s always the chance of a slip up, I’m saying we’ve come through a bad patch looking more accomplished, not up there with AFC teams from a few years ago maybe but from a true fans perspective things are on the up and I won’t dis my team for the effort.

Citeh have shown their vulnerability and AW will scrutinise the italian job and exploit the weakness’s.

I am not questioning your goals scored only the conceded column, you will be far more used to this situation than me having followed a team which has won the title on numerous occasions, but I keep looking at the teams in the prem and both of our fixtures and in truth I don’t see that many teams who do have a decent forward, I had a glance at your fixtures earlier and our own, when you look at prems gone by this is possibly the worst for forwards I can recall, even sides like West Ham had a Di Canio, Newcastle a Shearer, Sunderland a Phillips or a Quinn, Chelsea had a Drogba on fire in recent years, I actually am going to slit my own throat here with this comment, but I think this is the worst prem I have seen in years..Villa, Qpr, West Brom, Swansea, Everton,Sunderland, Wolves, Wigan, Saha is probably the best of the rest outside the top 5 along with Bent..It is poor and probably why Spurs are 3rd ..ha ha

I think you need to counter that with teams maybe playing more defensively now. But I do agree that the top goalscorers don’t seem to be there at the moment. If you look at the lower half of the league, the teams are going for the workhorse strikers, Long, Doyle, Morison, Graham, Best etc. Not many out and out strikers any more as I just don’t think they would get enough service.

Some full back or DM will always score a wonder goal against us, it’s happened on so many occasions (Danny Rose?), look at Vermaelen in his first season, he’s one who will weigh in with the odd goal soon too.

Sunderland have got Bendtner….he’s the greatest, ask him, Klasnic is up with VDV and Agbonlahor is up there with greedybayor

Berg10, that will be Steven Howard and the other anti Arsenal brigade. This team were the German champions last year and have just beaten Bayern Munich on their own patch. They are a very good side and were always going to get chances. Was at the game and we defended well. From the front also, with Gervinho, Theo and RVP helping out. Ramsey, Song and Arteta played well again in midfield and the defence for the most part looked solid. Even Per! The allegedly useless BFG.

Well at least you were spared the agony of the doom monger droning of Alan Smith, bring back Andy Gray!

Yeah, it doesn’t matter to me what conclusions the media and so called experts aim at us, I like what I’m seeing and am old enough(sadly) to realise it’s not perfect , there’s always room for improvement but that was a class performance last night particularly when we consider the awful start we had.
Song has taken some flak for a while with some gooners wanting him sold, particularly when he goes forward, no doubt they’ll all come on here declaring they got it wrong….yeah right!! I’ve admired the guy for some time, he’s quite unique as he looks cumbersome and that’s why some of our fans dislike him as the perception is looking awkward = poor technique, on the contrary he displays some dazzling footwork as well as timely tackles, most free kicks he gives away are covering for a team mate and bad reffing cos he looks clumsy. Top man.

I will watch the re-run tonight, just to make sure the notes I made were accurate. Will turn the sound down on your advice. Song is very good at shielding the ball with his strength, which sucks in 2 or 3 players and the he releases the ball and we can break. He sometimes gets it wrong and it looks bad, but just wish fans would see why he does it. Arteta has helped him hugely by filling in for him and Ramsey is the new Duracell bunny. Funny isn’t it that Wilshere is not as big a miss now. If him and Diaby get fit, that is 5 top class midfielders to choose from.

Please not Andy Gray!  No, no, no not Andy Gray.

I think all the commentators and pundits are crap, Smith, Neville, Townsend, I never watch MotD as I can’t stand Hansen and Shearer while that Liverpool muppet is the worst.

I watch with the sound turned down low, take a bathroom break at half-time and switch off at the end of the match.  I don’t need to listen to the blatherings of the has-beens and neverwozzers to appreciate what I have seen with my own eyes.

I wish that Sky. ITV and BBC would give us a crowd noise only option, not just football but tennis, rugby and to a lesser extent cricket.  The only sport where  commentary is necessary is Horse Racing, bring back Raymond Glendenning.

No, Neville’s got the most boring, monotone voice on the box, add to that the horrible Manchester accent and his undying love for Old Rednose and his team of egotistical money grabbers and there you have the very worst combination to comment on anything to do with the Mighty Arsenal.
