Praise for Arsenal’s defence is a tad premature

The in-thing at the moment, aside from rightly praising Robin van Persie for being a goalscoring machine, is to praise our new-found solidity at the back. While results have been good recently, I’d say it’s more down to the form of our attack than any miracles happening in defence.

Looking at our form since the defeat at Spurs, we’ve only actually managed three clean sheets in ten games, hardly awe-inspiring, but victories have covered this up. Along the way we’ve conceded a number of ridiculous goals to Stoke, the first two at Chelsea, and one in each of our last three games; these have not been great goals by the opposition, but gifts from Arsenal, not too dissimilar to what we’ve seen in recent years.

At home to Fulham, with our attack slightly off-form, we were finally punished for our poor defending. We got away with a draw, but it’s still a poor result at home to a team 15th in the table with a terrible away record, and should serve as a bit of a wake-up call: don’t get carried away with a mild improvement in our defence, some core problems with concentration and overplaying still definitely remain.

Having said that, we are playing without a proper right-back at the moment, and are managing better as a unit than the more-fancied and more expensive backlines of Chelsea and United, who lack proper midfields, and in Chelsea’s case, play suicidal tactics that don’t suit their players at all. Even if we’re not at our best, we’re looking good enough to close the gap on those two. Despite losing key players over the summer and missing a few through injury and introducing a host of new names, we have somehow managed to look like one of the more settled sides in the top seven, which Wenger must take great credit for.

It will be interesting to see who plays tomorrow and how they will fare against Man City, but I don’t think there’s any need to put too much emphasis on this game. A win would be great, but we probably don’t have the squad to be competing in four competitions this season. While in recent seasons the need for a trophy has been great, considering how we started this campaign, we now just need to make the top four and any silverware would be a bonus. As far as I’m concerned, the priority for tomorrow is to rest key players in preparation for the weekend.

I'm 23-years-old and currently living in Bristol, studying to be a journalist. I've been hooked on Arsenal since I was about 10, and as much as I sometimes wish I could stop, I can't give them up. Favourite player of all time would have to be Patrick Vieira for the sheer passion with which he played the game.

Last season 3 extra games were played due to replays.  This led to the perhaps the disintegration of The Arsenal, as the season took its toll.  The second team being unable to beat Ipswich, Leeds and Leyton Orient, the latter two in the FA Cup,

I would sugges that the Premier League team is kept completely and totally out of two English Cups.  IF the Reserves are unable to win the games first time, then bring in the quality of players who can do the job.  Banfield has very few games to manage so I would put Banfield in charge of the English Cups, to earn his unearned salary!

The backlash from the media, and the fans if we lose, would be huge and probably not worth it.  We would be accused of not taking the cups seriously and it would be true.

Also the domestic cups are our best chance of winning a trophy

Both goals in the last week were the result of trying to play out of defence when it needed to be booted away.  Song against Dortmund, then all the focus is on Tommy V scoring that own goa v Fulhaml, but the chance was created by again the ball not being cleared away.  This comes from the manager though, possession is all, so we’ll continue to concede like this.

Another commentator though settling for no trophies and top 4.  Ironically the terrible start has ended up actually taking pressure off Wenger.

I  feel that Wenger has to prioritize the Cups and EPL. So in my mind we need to focus on the following in this order:

    1) EPL top 4  ………  Best first team only, with AOC,Park,Ryo and Frimpong available
    2) CL progression ……. Best first team only plus experience….Benyoun, Arshavin, Diaby, Djourou etc.
3)FA Cup…….. Best youth and experienced team with AOC,Park,Miguel,Ryo, Frimpong, Arshavin, Benayoun, Djourou, Fabianski, Mannone, Chamakh
4)CC …..  Best youth team with a smattering of first team: Benayoun,Arshavin, Diaby, Fabianski, Chamakh

With that lineup we give RVP, Gervinho, Walcott, Arteta, Ramsey and Song the rest they’ll need to perform in the EPL and CL.

Never thought I`d say “it`s more important to beat Wigan than get past City in the Carling Cup”. Having said that the youngsters could make me eat humble pie.

This is a match where hero`s are born.

Premier League is everything to you guys now especially with key players having their heads turned in recent seasons and a new crop being pursued right now.

I think you must exploit Chelsea this season and get beyond them as soon as possible, because hand on heart I don’t think we are for catching now if you slip up against Man City in the league you will be relying on us to lose more games than we have in the last 2 seasons and that won’t happen..Chelsea is your target not the Carling Cup.

Oh come on Bigsy, you know full well that the Spuds are going to implode at any moment.  It will take just one or two defeats and half your players will drop their heads and realise just how lucky they have been this season to catch teams on very bad days.

Fifth or six is your true position and that’s where you will be at the end of the season.  More years in the Europa League wilderness beckon as does a cell door for the Twitchy the Tax Dodger.

On a completely different subject, does anyone have any idea when the FA and police are going to finish their investigations into the Terry and Suarez racism allegations, how long can it take to look at a bit of TV footage and decide who said what?  The words “long grass” and “kick it into” come to mind.

Firstly let me back your response up with facts if you choose to overlook them then that is up to you but they will be my reasons as to why I believe we finish top 4, last term Spurs really struggled with the coming to terms of Champions League football and prem fixtures at weekends, it took it’s toll on us and we lost some silly games to sides like Wigan, Blackpool, etc..if we had have won those games we would have been top 3 anyway JIN, now to hear Wenger come out with the same reason last weekend for a below par performance made me realise just what an affect it does have on a club, given the fact Man City, and United struggled too…now this season Spurs have no such distractions in the same way City didn’t last season, we are playing kids in the Europa shitty cup and resting first teamers for the prem, we defeated West Brom all be it a touch fortunately without our 2 best players and I think you are wrong to make such comments I really do, the facts on last years figures in the prem tell you that you are already half way to losing as many games as you did in the entire 2010 -2011 campaign and we have strengthened so I just don’t see us losing 8 games like last year, I just don’t and more precisely I don’t see you going the remainder of the season without throwing away silly games like last weekend, so it is not so much about how much better we are at all it is also about how you won’t keep the pace because of your own fragility at times JIN, perfectly fair in my book and a well accurate summary..as for Terry and Suarez I think the FA know they have some serious hot water to swim in, they have been very vocal about how that doesn’t happen on these shores and wallop..sand ..head ..bury !

Take RVP out of our attack, we struggle for goals, really struggle for goals.  The defence & goalkeeper has to take a lot credit for our current form because it must not be easy to defend one goal leads virtually every game.
