Why do Arsenal fans leave Emirates so early?

I’m starting to think I’m missing out on something. Is there a big party that everyone goes to? Something exciting on the telly? Or perhaps it’s a free goodie bag for the first 10,000 on to the tube?

It’s an age old moan but I am going to go on about it again. Just what is people’s (I’m refusing to call them fans) excuse for leaving Arsenal games at the Emirates early? Yet again on Saturday towards the end of the match against Fulham streams of people were leaving as the game was reaching its climax. And it wasn’t just a few hundred it’s thousands.

I’m pretty lucky, I took the decision to not get my season ticket next to the fantastic chaps from Sussex that I enjoy a pre match ale with every week. I went for the much maligned singing section organised by REDaction. Ticket on my own, but have made many new friends around me, singing, standing, swearing, mass bundles when goals go in, all good natured banter and eagerness from everyone to learn the words to any new song that crops up.

I accept not everyone wants to enjoy games in that fashion, and apart from one or two other isolated spots everyone else pretty much sits down, but for heaven’s sake, you are there to cheer the team on, not turn your back. Players and managers talk about the 12th man, and how a crowd can suck a goal in for them.

So instead of leaving the game early and complaining about how bad Arshavin played back in the pub before the match has even finished, give the players a “come on you reds” or something and help the team turn one point into three. I could just about understand it if we were getting stuffed 5-0 at home but not when the game is tantalisingly poised at one apiece.

We pay some of the highest prices in the world to watch our team, and with fans all over the world some of us are in the lucky position to be able to watch the team live on a regular basis. So why would you want to leave the game before it’s finished? You can practically make out the cannon on the far side of the pitch before the 4th official has put his board up for added on time.

Maybe we should get the club to dig out the old scoreboard that used to hang off the side of the East Stand at Highbury with the clapping hands and “come on Arsenal” scrolling across, so people remember that they are there to cheer on the team and not just send a volley of abuse towards the player and manager each time the team doesn’t win.

Why not lock fans in until the final whistle blows? Or shut all the train stations from 10 mins before the end of the game until 15 mins after game has finished? The Nobhead fans in front of me arrive 10 mins late and leave 10 mins early. May as well not bother.

This is such a bloody important issue you bring up. I truly feel if we learnt to be a bit more vocal and supportive we could turn draws into wins. We must take responsibility for the loss as well as the players if we don’t show up, or did you think the words “12th man” was for nothing.

Excellent article.  I have travelled to England on occasions that i can get tickets to then highbury and now the Emirates.  So you so lucky to be able to watch live week in and week out.  i watch old games sometimes from highbury days and listen to how the crowd made it such an intimidating place to play.  I wish the Emirates and the fans could find their voice and unite behind their team like in days gone past

I gave up my ticket last year for 2 reasons…..firstly cost….secondly because i was so irritated with the poor support . Supporters who sit thro whole game & do not add to the singing , then leave 10 mins before end of game. Turn up next game & whinge about the last game etc. Its a great stadium, but with 50% corporate/day trippers, we will never have the support the club deserve. Some supporters need to take a look at themselves !!!

They can’t be real Arsenal fans.  Perhaps they are the type who only support Arsenal when they are winning.

I stopped going to the Emirates as the atmosphere is dire, one time I was shouting and singing when another (fan) told me “can’t you sit down and shut up?”.  That was the last straw, it is a better atmosphere in the pubs and you get a bit of banter with fans of other teams too!!

I’m sorry but you aint a gooner.  Your just the type of plastic fanatic you are describing.  The real reason people leave early is becasue a huge majority travel long distances to the grove, if you arrive at The Arsenal tube 10 minutes after 90 mins then your stuck in the line for the tube for over an hour, add this to the 2 hrs plus and you dont get home to well late.  It takes me an hour and 15 minutes to get there and over 2 1/2 hours to travel back home to Guildford.  Some mates drive from Birmingham on most occassions they get home sooner then I!!!

Try walking to Finsbury Park via Hornsey Road (past the Tollington pub)  - I did that after Fulham on Saturday and walked straight onto the tube.  In fact I was supping a cider in the bar at Paddington (30 min tube journey from Finsbury Park) by 8.20pm when I had only walked out of the ground at 7.30pm.

I get home to dartford in roughly 2hours after clapping the team off. I much prefer away days. Real fans! Not total bellends like u

Football’s changed. Average age in the grounds is much higher & the older gent/lady doesn’t want to spend 90 minutes jumping around and as people say, taking 2 hours to get home on the tubes. If you don’t like it (I know caused by high ticket prices for a start) then speak to the nice people on the pitch & get them to lower their wage demands. Also as an earlier poster says, there is a lot of corporate & day trippers. That is just the way it is to fill a 60k stadium week in, week out. I love all these people who say ‘if I could get tickets….’, there are hundreds of spares knocking about.

You have all failed to mention the real reason it happens, Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United, 3 clubs where success has driven true fans from the club and created a new super breed of “look at me i’m wealthy and a winner, anyone want to do business at the ground with me” Chelsea is full of Japanese, look for yourselves when they are on TV, the first 3 rows everywhere are Japanese, outcome – no atmosphere…United are full of corporate prawn sandwich brigade as Roy Keane infamously said ..result – no atmosphere….Arsenal..now paying 300 thousand a year for a season ticket, very few true fans can afford it..result – no atmosphere…..You only need to walk into a national sports chain and see if your shirt is hanging up..if it is you are Fu*ked….give it 18 months and every man and his dog will be wearing City shirts…there is nothing unique about following the old big 4, everyone does ..I am happy following shit that is noisy shit , loyal shit and happy shit !

Yeah, all you say of the top 4 is true, success is attractive and the clubs with the higher percentage of “loyal” fans are the most unsuccessful clubs.

This doesn’t mean they have more loyal fans than the top 4….just a higher percentage of the total fanbase.

  • Jack the lad

What a load of drivel! Are you saying my 70 year old dad’s not a real fan because after 50 years he’s quietened down? Rubbish.

I used to sit (well, stand actually) on the lower tier of the north bank, and I used to enjoy the noise. Now I’m up in the club level it’s quieter, but I’m quieter too. Partly it’s because I’ve got a better view and partly because it’s quiet enough for me to hold a conversation with my brother about tactics and performances. This means I’m not a real fan because I’m not belting out chants for 90 mins? Jog on mate!

People have been wondering why the emirates has become the library. It’s pretty obvious really. 1) high ticket prices; this doesn’t mean that we’re all posh plonkers, but it does mean it’s drastically pushed up the average age of fans in the stadium. 2) Wenger has brought cultured football to arsenal, educated us all, and now we are far more cultured fans.

As for early departures (I have to confess that forthe first time ever I’ve been leaving early, only because my brother has got an asbo tag and is on curfew, lol) it’s not normally that bad and is only really noticeable when it’s a poor game, which you should blame the players for, not the supporters.

There is something that can be done to improve this though; we gave £5 mill to London underground to improve holloway road tube, but instead of spending the money, the basically close the station for matches. This creates a huge problem for most fans because most use the tube, which means they are all being funnelled onto the Gillespie road.

So stop whinging at fans and start having a go at london underground!

That is a fair point, why does Holloway Road have to be closed, a few years back I walked all the way to Caledonian Road, got a tube back to Manor House and ended up throwing a wobbly and got a mate to pick me up at 11 o’clock at night, I would have been far better off wandering back to Manor House to start with if I knew it was out of action..bloody ridiculous !

As for the early departures, I guess we will have to agree to disagree.  It is bad, it’s nearly every bloody game as well….funny how when we beat Barcelona at home last season everyone suddenly was able to stay in the ground till the final whistle.

@ Stuart; have you forgotten what you wrote?

” so people remember that they are there to cheer on the team”

” you are there to cheer the team on”

Listen I hate seeing people leave early, I think it’s disrespectful to both the team, and those that can’t afford to go. Beside that I actually enjoy filing my way down the Gillespie road on my way to finsbury park. But the truth is it can add about 40 min to your journey.

The frustrating thing is that there is lots that could be done, like keeping holloway road open or putting on a shuttle bus to major overground stations. The truth is, once we’re out the gate and not spending any money they don’t give a s#!t about us.

They could easily get the ball rolling by doing a couple of matchday surveys (which people would fill in if they though it might shorten their journey). This would tell them where fans are headed and what route they take, allowing them to plan contingency routes for the most congested ones.

        Will this happen though?…

I got an email last week from the Premier League, asking to answer all sorts of questions about my “match day experience, ranging from what I thought of prices and how I get to games so it is being asked.

You state that you willingly add 40 mins onto your journey just because you like that route?  I prefer to use that route too, but if I need to get home quickly I’ll use the route via Hornsey Road because as you state it saves about 40 minutes.  No brainer.

There is also Highbury & Islington tube station to use as well as Arsenal & Finsbury Park stations.

Why not suggest to the club about doing a survey about how they get to games?  I agree it’s not good, but I think people make it out to be worse than it actually is.

I will agree that it’s disrespectful and also a waste of a ticket if someone is only watching 75% of the game.

Funnily enough I’m starting to think that when you do leave at full time you actually get onto the tube a lot quicker because a lot of people have already gone home, so in fact it’s plausible that people leaving early are being held up more than the people who stay to the end.

Another tube station access would be the answer. There were surveys done by the Club several times in first couple of seasons at new stadium- to what effect?

Totally agree with you but for me this is only the tip of the iceberg. What about all the prats who come into the ground 5 minutes after kick off then head off 5 minutes before half time presumably to the bar then return 5 minutes into the second half before finally calling it a day 5 or 10 minutes from the end.Its absolutely frustrating to be constantly up and down letting them in or out and beyond belief that they bother to spend quite a lot of money just to go through the motions of being there. When the game is over I look forward to spending hours in the pub discussing the game but would not remotely think of missing any of the action just for a drink. Why thay don’t just stay in the pub all afternoon or evening is beyond me.

Totally agree. It’s beyond me why there is a mass exodus on 88 mins; especially when, like Fulham Sat, the team is going hammer & tongs to try & get a last minute winner. I’m sure the players would like a stadium packed full of Gooners roaring them on until the bitter end instead of seeing the stands empty out of the corner of their eye. How would the ‘early leavers’ like it if the team just gave up with 5 mins to go?
Needless to say, me & my mob stay til the last; clap our players off (& sometimes the opposition if deserved) and more often than not nowadays boo the officials (Mike Bloody Dean) and avoid the queue for the tube by going in the pub for a couple or three after.

Early leavers are a massive embarassment to the club, to the players and to real fans.  Whenever the issue is raised you hear these early leaver-types coming out with all their sob stories about why they absolutely have to leave early or the world will stop turning- truth is you sound like a bunch of bleating X Factor contestants with your silly little sob stories.  The distance they travel is one of the excuses.  Growing up in Devon (about 200 miles away) didn’t make me leave early whenever I got to see them play and the same goes for any of my friends who supported London clubs.  Then you also hear the part-timers moan about a packed tube, which infuriates me as these morons don’t seem to grasp that our ground has by far and away the best public transport access in the country, if not the continent yet they still leave early.

I think it’s ridiculous spending all that money on a ticket and then leaving early. Perfect example of this was the Liverpool game at the start of the season. We we’re only one nil down and people were leaving in bulk, surely these last moments are a. when the team needs us most b. when the lions share of the action happens.
The atmosphere of late has been getting better. I sit in the upper tier and I must say that at times the quiet has been a joke, at one point I stood up as the stand up if you hate the spuds chant was ringing round the ground to find I was the only one within 500 seats doing so. I actually felt awkward standing up!
Regardless of the reasons our fans are a joke at times and it pains me to see supporters sitting there slagging off our players then leaving early.
Not sure what the solution is but it’s def a problem :(

Stuart, I may sometimes leave a little early due to the congestion of getting out of the stadium on mid week games as I do not get home till 2am.But at least I know who we were playing on saturday and it was not Fulham it was QPR. I have had a season ticket since 1962.when there were gentleman and gentlewomen only seated in the west stand upper and not louts like there are today.no swearing was tollerated but we all cheered all the same. The reason its so  quiet at the Emerates is because the game we play is not direct and can be very boreing with just midfield play.and no action in the goal area.we have been spoilt during the early 2000s.
