Arsenal’s Resurgence Continues

Arsenal’s Premier League resurgence continued as a comfortable 4-0 victory over Wigan at the DW Stadium saw them move into fifth place in the table.

Mikel Arteta, Thomas Vermaelen, Gervinhoand, inevitably, Robin van Persie all found themselves on the scoresheet as the Gunners registered a sixth victory in their past seven league games to draw level with Newcastle United.

Wigan, who move bottom of the table following Blackburn’s victory over Swansea, offered little threat as Arsene Wenger oversaw the kind of accomplished victory that used to be so commonplace for Arsenal, but has been rather absent over the past 12 months.

Indeed, it was Arsenal’s biggest away victory since the opening day of the 2009-10 season when they defeated Everton 6-1 at Goodison Park.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez, a proud Catalan, took his cue from Barcelona when deploying Wigan in a rather amorphous and unexpected 4-6-0 formation, with Jordi Gomez operating in the Lionel Messi ‘false nine’ role.

It was the Spaniard who enjoyed the first chance of the match, though Messi would no doubt have done rather better when Wojciech Szczesny palmed a cross from David Jones into the path of Gomez, who had the goal at his mercy but fired his shot against Andre Santos.

The real impact of Wigan’s tactical manoeuvring, far from ushering in a Barcelona-esque performance, was to leave them rather toothless in attack and it was Arsenal who enjoyed by far the greater weight of chances in the first half.

Gary Caldwell had almost scored an own goal when making a mess of an attempted clearance from a Theo Walcottcross before Arsenal did take control of the match with two goals in the space of a minute.

It was Arteta who struck the first blow when, on 28 minutes, he found a pocket of space 25 yards from goal and unleashed a swerving effort that flew past Ali Al Habsi, who should have done better in the Wigan goal as the ball flew through his fingers.

After the restart, Arsenal quickly won a corner and Vermaelen met Van Persie’s deep delivery at the back post as he leaped above Caldwell to steer a precise header inside the far post and out of the reach of Al Habsi.

Having been at fault for the first goal and helpless for the second, Al Habsi then displayed the kind of form that has seen him become Wigan’s best player in a dismal campaign when extending his left arm to make a fine save to deny Van Persie, who had shot first-time from Gervinho’s square pass.

If Gomez was playing with little success dropping off the front from a central position, then his opposite number, Van Persie, was revelling in the chance to operate from withdrawn positions despite his role as a lone striker.

The Dutchman loves to drop deep to collect the ball and on the stroke of half-time he came into his own half to take possession before releasing Gervinho with a beautiful ball through the centre of the pitch. The Ivorian rounded Al Habsi but ran the ball far too wide and lost possession.

Arsenal perhaps should have had the chance to extend their lead just five minutes into the second half. Ramsey took possession of a loose ball and drove into the box before being clearly pulled back by Steve Gohouri. The midfielder, though, was denied a penalty by Mark Clattenburg.

The visiting side only had to wait until the 62nd minute for their third goal though. Van Persie exchanged passes with Alex Song before cutting inside his man and lashing a shot at goal. Al Habsi could only parry the effort into the path of Gervinho, who tapped in for his third Premier League goal of the season.

The goal was a combination of a lengthy passing move and Arsenal were clearly enjoying themselves on a slick surface at the DW Stadium. They constructed another fluid attack on 64 minutes but, unusually, when finding time and space in the box to apply the finishing touch, Van Persie skewed his shot wide of the post.

On 78 minutes he would not be denied though. Walcott skipped away from Caldwell and then retained possession as the Wigan skipper put in a desperate challenge in a failed attempt to nick the ball away.

Walcott waited for Van Persie to drop into a pocket of space and the Dutchman swept the ball home for the fourth and final goal, and his 14th of the season in the Premier League.

Great performance. Very professional. Defended well and looked a threat in attack. Walcott had a quiet game overall but set up RVP yet again. I wouldnt swap our front 3 for anyone elses at present. They are terrorising defences. Ramsey would have made Speed proud yesterday. Another mature, controlled performance. £5m for an 18 year old who has everything. So glad we didnt sign Parker. He cant play in a technical team like ours and would have hindered our free flowing football.

Considering previous visits to the north west this could have been a tricky game for Arsenal.  This present side is just too professional to allow that sort of thing to happen now.

Early pressure by Wigan was easily absorbed as everybody pressed hard when the home side had the ball.

There is a greater variety to Arsenal’s play these days, consequently they are much less predictable….Stop press…Stop Press.  Arsenal at home to Leeds in the FA Cup….than when everything had to be channelled through the Homesick Spaniard and Na£ri ran in circles.

Another Vermaelen goal from a corner, a wicked Arteta shot from outside the box, a tap in for Gervinho and a great finish by van Persie after a stylish run and lay-back by Walcott.

An excellent all round performance, three more points, clean sheet and improving goal difference.

    Onwards and upwards!

    C’mon The Gunners!!!

I have said all along that the form in the prem this season is as accurate as I have ever seen it, I didn’t think Liverpool would get anything at Fulham last night, Liverpool remain one of the worst teams we have played this season, and Fulham was a tough place for us to get 3 points, The form is rock solid and right now the way you are playing you would spank Liverpool too, Chelsea will miss out on the top 4 not Spurs  or Arsenal..I hand on heart think we will slip up at Stoke this weekend, I don’t think we are equipped with the tools to go there and get 3 points, not the way they bombard you at every opportunity with park football throw ins and brutal thuggery, however this is my game which I am banking on City doing us a favour in the next few weeks when they give us them back by beating you again, anything we get this weekend is icing on the cake in my opinion, because Chelsea will slip even further behind us all next monday and then they come to the lane where they will struggle big time as they have done in recent seasons when they were good never mind this term..nth london will be challenging the mancs all the way.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. You should beat Stoke this weekend if you are as great as you say you are. Liverpool drew 1-1 with City at home. That is 4 goals better than you did. So if your theory is correct that a teamis better because of their own result against that team, then Liverpool are better than you. Twat.

Look let’s just draw a line under it all, I recognise the signs I have been there for 40 years people, it is pointless wasting your time trying to comment on things this season, I have done it all myself for years, no point getting excited and telling everyone what you are going to do on the back of beating Norwich and Wigan, we all saw the slip up against Fulham just like Spurs used to do after trapping off, the league table don’t lie and you don’t beat us when you play us either, (just like we didn’t you lot when we thought we had cracked it) been there and done that, I know it is frustrating but it is just the way it is, we are better than you and deal with it, no point being in the champ league for years on end if it is just a piss about to claim you are a big side, that is wengers fault he has brainwashed you all that 4th is great, meanwhile we have sneaked up on the rails whilst he lay sleeping at the bottom of the tree like a mad Hare, 4th is not good enough for a club like Arsenal, the fans know it, the board know it and so do the reams of players leaving each season..keep chasing ! don’t try hanging on to our coat tails, you aint pulling us down with you ! away and gone..just like you used to say to us…soon be 7 years !

Look mate, maybe the table doesn’t lie but at the moment mathematically there’s several teams in contention and forget all the chatter that we beat….you lost to….that’s bookie talk. You’re fortunate that Chelski are dipping, Liverpool too, we had a poor start but most of the problems seem to have been addressed and manU have had better starts but generally get better after Xmas so possibly your resurgence after so many failed years will be short lived.
Your envy of us in the Champs Lge. shows “just a piss about etc” but that’s achievement mate, something yours couldn’t do, the fact we never achieved the ultimate was only testament to the great teams we were up against.

Is a Spurs fans mentality. They have had so many false dawns in the last 50 years that they will overhype anything that looks like success. They still see us as the benchmark. It is all about how the do against us, where they finish in the league against us. It is the mentality of an inferior small minded football club.
