How will London do in the Champions League?

The Twittersphere was alive last night with the scoreline London 2-0 Manchester, as both City and, more spectacularly, United failed to join Arsenal and Chelsea for the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League.

The response from dejected mancs has been that this scoreline is of little relevance; the red and blue halves of Manchester still make up the top two in the Premier League, and the Londoners don’t really have a chance of conquering Europe anyway.

I’m not from London so I’m not interested in London pride or anything like that, but I would suggest that our friends from up North wouldn’t be so quick to write either ourselves or Chelsea just yet.

After all, with a look at the competition, I’d argue that ahead of us are only super favourites Real Madrid and Barcelona, who would be the pick of the bunch even with United and City still in the competition. I can’t see too many other teams posing a real challenge for the trophy this year.

Of course there are AC Milan and Bayern Munich, who both have pedigry in this competition, but neither side are what they were and they play in lower quality, less competitive leagues.

Elsewhere, Napoli have obviously impressed and are blessed with some great attacking talent. They would be a stern test for Arsenal or Chelsea in the next round, but not an insurmountable one. Also from Serie A we have Inter Milan, who are struggling in 15th place in Italy and are being managed by Claudio Ranieri. Enough said?

It has to be said, though, that the two clubs from the capital are both in something of a transition just now, and a lot will depend on how they change things in January. The likes of Drogba, Anelka, Kalou and Alex are all likely to be leaving Stamford Bridge, while gooners will be hoping to see the likes of Chamakh and Arshavin traded in for more potent attacker to challenge Gervinho and Walcott and provide backup for van Persie. However the clubs spend their money in January will have a big say on their Champions League futures.

As they are now, both won harder groups than the one in which United finished 3rd, so should not be scoffed at. Arsenal in particular look more experienced and more solid than in any season in living memory, and I truly feel have the potential to cause a bit of a shock this year; questionable league form often seems to bring the best out of us in the welcome distraction of Europe.

Two major competitors are out of the way, that’s for sure.

I'm 23-years-old and currently living in Bristol, studying to be a journalist. I've been hooked on Arsenal since I was about 10, and as much as I sometimes wish I could stop, I can't give them up. Favourite player of all time would have to be Patrick Vieira for the sheer passion with which he played the game.

Same as always, end up getting knocked out to Madrid, Barca, Inter, Bayern or possibly AC..so all a waste of time and a waste of 5 months..like it is every bloody season, let’s hope this farcical tournament goes back to the best champions or best 2 in each league on a knockout asap, sitting through dross for 4 months is boring and pintless..when the tough get going the english die away moaning about platini and unfair decisions like always..RVP nou camp after taking a royal spanking complete with Cesc back heel to his beloved Barca

Arsenal have never lost to any italian sides . and from last two seasons it was against barcelona. But this year i think we can cope with any sides.

Wow, can I borrow that crystal ball?

For someone who professes to love watching the game it must be pretty boring knowing the outcome, I prefer my way where we always have a chance with nothing guaranteed, not even Barca even ifthough I know it would be extremely tough.

Don’t need a crystal ball to know when you have one of the worst goals against in the prem ad still struggle to beat sides like Fulham that at least 5 teams are better than you ..bloody obvious to me..how the hell are you equipped to cope with Ronaldo at Madrid with that side ? you struggled to mark him when he was at United and you had a decent team..don’t need a crystal ball just a brain !

I think you underestimate the strength of Dortmund, I’m not saying the Bundesliga is as tough as the prem but their apetite outweighed the technicalities and they pushed us hard which took a lot out of us, this contributed to the visible fatigue in the Fulham game., I’m sure I recall Ronnie having a quiet game(s) against us, I don’t fear RM at all, you’ll undoubtedly call me biased for that but  with a strong enough line up , so that depends on availability that is not a gimme.

Berg 10 this rant by the way is nothing to do with Arsenal, I just feel the champ league is crap, it has killed the world cup now, it has killed football in general, and I mean that from the heart, gone are the days of watching maradona and getting a buzz from it, I see messi every week all season boring !..I know spurs need to get into it to kep our better players but the comp in it’s current format is shite, Arsenal deserve a place at the top table of course they do, but beating a poor german side champions or not they are poor, a weak greek team, and they were, is just a waste of time as UEFA try and spin more dough, I am more than happy to sit back and watch Arsenal go into every year as champions even if it means spurs finish 3 rd and miss out..the champions league is one drawn out load of tosh..and the europa has become a laughing stock taking the same format..i loved the uefa cup and the cup winners cup..yes times change but this is just over hyped nonsense..and only 2 clubs can win it..barca and madrid ..pointless !

OK. Let’s agree to disagree on the strength of the Germans, as said above they gave us everything they had so it was tough but we overcame, the Greeks…yes, weak but we were in the enviable position of being able to rest most of the 1st choice and especially avoiding injuries, the line up was an untested one at best with many get the experience, when you consider the rested players, some of whom will have to compete with Jack W, Bacary, possibly Gibbsy for a starting berth have done very well since being allowed to settle in and the point being that realistically we used some 3rd/4th choice selection for that game.

I’ll agree that the European format and to some degree the EPL is focused on finace as opposed to the fan aspect of modern football but it’s all we have and can’t see it changing for quite some time.

less competitive leagues ? Napoli would destroy you lot over 2 legs..where has all this arrogance come from ? did you watch 3 of your first team back 4 performing like muppets the other night ? why are AC Milan now worse than Fulham ? utter nonsense

I am disappointed that the other 2 biggest clubs in england along with us and Chelsea are out. Would rather the best teams be in it. All we could do was do our job and qualify. Which we did with a game to spare. Only one of our first choice back 5 played on Tuesday so that explains the lack of cohesion. But it was a meaningless game and therefore players weren’t up for it.

If we were at home and the game mattered, there is no way even a second string should lose to a Greek side.

We beat Milan in the San Siro so other than Barca and Madrid, everyone else is beatable. Looking forward to the draw next week for the greatest comp in club football, knowing we are in it.
