It’s vital Arsenal boost squad in window, Arsene

Losing to Fulham to start 2012 hurt but it has hopefully served as a wakeup call for Arsene Wenger that his side cannot continue to challenge for the top four without recognised fullbacks. The regulars are out injured and have been for a considerable time. Kieran Gibbs, Andre Santos and Carl Jenkinson are on the treatment table for the foreseeable future so now the January transfer window is open, Wenger must invest.

The reliable Bacary Sagna returning to training is a huge boost for the Gunners, having lost the French full back in October after breaking his ankle against Spurs, but he isn’t expected to play for three weeks. Thomas Vermaelen is out for a couple of weeks and the underperforming Johan Djourou is now suspended following his dismissal at Craven Cottage. The defensive situation is looking bleak for Wenger, so what are the current options? Well Laurent Koscielny has filled in at right back before but is drastically improving in the middle and deserves his chance instead of the woeful Mertesacker once Vermaelen returns.

Micquel is a talented youngster but suits a central role and must be used as back up to gain experience whereas Sebastian Squillaci must be offloaded in January after some horrifying performances. That leaves no cover for Wenger on the right and Coquelin coped well at Fulham at fullback but is clearly a central midfielder.

If Arsenal are serious about challenging for silverware this campaign and qualifying for the Champions League, then a strong back line must be established before we lose more ground on the front runners. A proposed loan deal isn’t sufficient due to lack of options but in Wenger’s defence there isn’t a plethora of quality fullbacks out there to sign in the current market. Purchases were left far too late in the summer and panic buying must be avoided. For instance Wayne Bridge has been rumoured as a possible signing but he struggled at West Ham on loan last season and is lacking match fitness.

Yes the former England left back has experience but he has clearly lost his pace and his motivations for football are questioned when he has stayed on the sidelines for Man City for so long without trying to engineer a move away from the Eithad Stadium. Stealing Gary Cahill from under Chelsea’s nose would be an astute move as Koscielny could cover on the right until Jenkinson returns to compete with Sagna. Alex from Chelsea and Raul Albiol from Real Madrid could fit a similar purpose as they are capable of playing in numerous positions at the back.

Otherwise Leighton Baines from Everton is a stand out target. Everton need money to invest in their squad and the left back has been in fine form in recent seasons, earning England caps along the way. The combination of Sagna and Baines on the flanks would be one of the best in the Premiership but will Wenger have the will to spend big to shore up his defence? Let’s hope so.

Just a thought and what would you guys do in his position ?

It is blatantly obvious Chelsea lack creativity and width, this is undeniably the reason Torres is failing to score goals at Spurs or Arsenal he would bag up, I have never been an admirer of Benayoun I must be honest but he does play in the pocket and could unlock a few goals for Torres, so why doesn’t AVB recall him, what a stupid situation that Benayoun could upset the 4th spot which his parent club are going for, and yes the same applies to the glamour puss we have up front who doesn’t know shit from crisps..Benayoun ? are you expecting a recall ? I would wouldn’t you ?

Simple reason why Benayoun can’t be recalled, he is on a season long loan.  Like in so many of your inane posts, Bigsy, you fail to grasp the essential truths.  Instead you continue to spout the fevered outpourings of your delusional imagination.

Obviously your expectations have been over-stimulated by the fact that your beloved Spuds have reached the previously almost unheard of height of THIRD in the table.  Yes THIRD.  Remind me, when were the Spuds last in such an elevated position.

Keep taking the medication, it will help sustain your illusions, at least untill your sorry apology for a Premiership side implode and start the inevitable downward slide back to it’s customary mid-table mediocrity and obscurity.

Best of luck to Michael ONeil on his appointment as Northern Ireland Manager, it must be lovely to get a job where the fans are not particularly passionate, nothing much is expected of you, and they are quite happy to finish close without winning..a bit like the Arsenal managers job you might say !

Talking of managers, you brought the subject up after all, how many have you had at the Spuds since Wenger was appointed?  Just where did they get you?  Who is your pick for Old ‘Arry’s replacement when he gets banged up for his tax fiddles?

yeah perhaps he may if he wants glamour but then chelsea indicates he didn’t back then, so I think he will want to look at on field talent and money to spend, and with respect Arsenal don’t have the appearance of being up on spurs on either in the last 18 months..as for capello he has done himself no favpours with the England job but his CV at club level is the best anywhere in world football..

Take away Modric and Bale and to some extent VDV…and….?? The rest are ordinary.

Based on the last 18 months as you put it we had at the time, RVP,Cesc, na$ri, Jack, TV as top players the rest are no better/worse than yours.
As for HAVING the money to spend we have more but have chosen not to spend, that said if AW did leave who knows how the club would react with a Mourhino type.

I agree but no manager not even Mancini can accomodate and allow for 6 changes, that is seriously disruptive to the squad, they will need time to settle and Cahill is useless, so amazed you include him, slow as arse holes and ball watches, Podolski seems to have come from nowhere, but not all that to be honest, you should sign pavyluchenko, he has ability and would fit in well with you lot, he scores goals and would thrive in a side like yours, he is just not good enough to get into ours ..ha ha

As long as you stick around when the bubble bursts, as said above you’ve been fortunate with injuries, we haven’t faired much worse than last season on results with two first choice and second choice full backs out for long periods, our young playmaker Jackie boy, that’s without considering Cesc and na$ri disruption, we’re only 3 points worse off for the same period last season.

Right an honest from the heart down right decent and fair account of how I see things, do you concur ?
Arsenal as with all clubs have always had a few deadwood players, I note a few of you are mentioning a clear out, christ I follow spurs I know all about deadwood we have benn littered with it for years from Vega to Atouba, but although I can point to the odd Carter, Allinson or even a Morrow, it is the first time in my 40 years I have seen so much at Arsenal in one squad, as you guys have listed, Sqeelacchi, Bendtner, Chamakh, Arshavin, Djorou,Almunia, borderline like Walcott, Gervinho (still settling to a degree) what really is going on ? it is about as far from being Arsenal as I can ever remember, yes Wenger likes bringing youth through but why is he not playing Oxo over Theo ? Arteta is doing a good job but he is no Arsenal player is he lets be honest, how the hell has this happened, I tried to have a conversation with a few of my yiddy friends about this the other day, but you cant get a reasonable view from them they won’t even accept someone is a decent player , so all a bit pointless, so what one of you boys is prepared to actually accept the baton and give an honest from the heart account as to why in the late 80′s you carried 1 or 2 , 6 years ago you carried noone now people like Jenkinson are being touted as the new Lee Dixon..he bloody isn’t he and he is not Arsenal quality either..???

I think all credit to the barcodes defence but shrek’s looked a shadow of his former self for some time. Is it tactical or financial?  I hate fergie but tactically he’s one of the best around so maybe complacency has subconciously set in to some degree, he’s obviously very high strung visibly.

Firstly and I know this is a big statement but I think Fergie is finished, when he ruled with an iron fist 15 years ago he was idolised by kids he brought through, those he brought in like Staam and Keane soon learnt you don’t mess and the dressing room was his, I think now he is dealing with a different type of mentality and fair play to Wenger and The Twicth for this because they always get players playing for them out of respect not fear !..he is done with I really feel that..as for Rooney, no i wouldn’t turn him down of course not, but all this biggest club in world nonsense all the time, if they are rooney doesn’t fit the bill !

I think the club as a whole are not functioning as well since the Glazers moved in.
The only trouble with players doing it out of respect is when they are riding on the name of the club and think they’ve “done it” and their game falls off, I can think of a few candidates inat AFC on a barrowfull of cash and certainly not pulling their weight imo.
I watched barcodes battling last night and Fulham against us, the latter looked fitter/stronger than us and possibly this is down to the gruelling fixtures over Xmas.

I think the term “biggest club in the world” is over stated, they are huge in their popularity as an icon club, as for ability no I agree, total nonsense.

Having a right old argument with a Manc fan on Facebook, I think Wenger is a better manager than Fergie and all Fergie does it rape and pillage other teams players, we all know the Neville era, but how long can he dine on that, he poached Berba, Keane, Staam, Sheringham, Carrick, Cole, Cantona, Yorke, Ferdinand, Rooney to a degree, and has paid top dollar for most of them, he seldom takes a chance on kids it is a myth, Paul Pogba is one of the best young talents about and Fergie is on the verge of losing him, he allowed Gerrad Pique arguably in the top 4 defenders in the world to leave as a17 year old, would Wenger ? no chance, and in fairness..Spurs took a chance on Walker, Kaboul, Bale, Lennon, Ekotto, Dawson, Huddlestone, Livermore, Modric, Arsenal are just the best at young kids under the Wenger reign and spend minimal money without being off the pace, Fergie spends 40 million on everyone and nicks talent, that is not a good manager/ coach imo, he buys the finished product and often with disastrous consequences, De Gea , Djemba Djemba, Taaibi..am I wrong ? Fergie aint all that he has just spent all he could on the finsihed article..perhaps why they are 800 million in debt then !

Don’t think he’s been too bad, but know what you mean. It’s amazing that the media always accuse Blackburn of buying the league in ’95 but forget to remind us that  Fergie bought Andy Cole for £6 million, a British transfer record, during the same season.

The difference is Fergie has won trophies in the last couple of years, where as Wenger has not won a trophy in 7 years. Trophies make a manager. All Arsenal is atm is a training ground for Man City. Makes sense because our chief executive Gazidis is a Man City supporter. Arsenal has become a business, nothing more. Arsene is just their puppet to train up youngsters and sell them for millions to make profit.
