Henry saves Wenger from further embarrassment

From the outside looking in, everything seems to be fine in Gunner land. King Henry comes back to save the day with a late winner against Leeds in a 1-0 victory and Arsenal hosts Aston Villa in the next round of the FA Cup.

However, after reading between the lines, I wasn’t too thrilled with Arsene Wenger’s pre-game “motivational speech” to the fans, players, owners, and sponsors. I realize that football’s changed over the last few decades and there’s a lot of negativity attached to it these days, but has it really come to the point where managers are setting their team up to fail even before kickoff?

In my eyes Wenger disrespected the FA Cup and everybody involved with the competition before the match against Leeds by telling the press that it isn’t really that important. He said it’s a “bonus” and is played for “enjoyment” since it’s a compulsory tournament. He basically wrote the Cup off before the players laced up their boots and had many fans wondering why they should spend their hard-earned money on tickets or tune in to watch the game on television.

I’m sure one of the last things club owners and sponsors want to hear before a game is that the world’s oldest cup competition isn’t important. What message does this send to the players and fans? It’s basically a pre-arranged excuse for coming up short on the pitch and gives the players a reason to put in a sub-par performance. If the manager doesn’t care about the game and competition then why should they? It’s sad enough that football managers feel this way about domestic cups, but they should be keeping all negative thoughts to themselves as they don’t do anybody any good.

Wenger said the real goal for the Gunners this and every other season is to qualify for the Champions League. But why, isn’t it the objective of football teams to try and win every game they play? Why pick and choose the matches you’re going to put an effort into winning and those you can’t be bothered with? After winning nothing for six years Arsenal fans want to see some silverware, no matter what competition it’s won in.

Qualifying for the Champions League pads the team’s bank account but other than a few extra games and higher ticket prices I’m not really sure what it offers the fans. When Arsenal does make it to Europe, like they usually do, all I hear is Wenger moan about the fixture list. But he’s not the only one. I remember Alex Ferguson coming out the day before a Champions League game in Turkey or somewhere a few years ago and saying how the team would be happy to go home with a 0-0 draw.

If I’ve just flown to the continent to support United and spent a few thousand quid doing it I’m definitely going to ask myself what’s the point? These types of statements are harmful to a club since the players may easily adopt the same attitude. Why can’t football managers and players display true enthusiasm and passion for the game like the fans do? These guys use whatever they can for convenience sake. If their team’s playing poorly in the Champions League they suddenly say the Premier League is their priority and if they’re struggling in the league they announce to the world they’re concentrating on the Champions League.

It’s easy to see why some of the older football fans are becoming jaded with the modern game and modern-day players and managers. I’ve noticed Wenger always has his finger cocked and loaded when it’s time to point the blame. He has a bad habit of blaming everybody else for the team’s shortcomings. He goes on about the referees, the schedule, the weather, and whatever’s convenient on the day. Not once have I heard him take responsibility himself. Have you ever heard Wenger say he picked the wrong starting 11 or admit he made poor substitutions? I haven’t.

Anyway, everybody’s happy for another day and Wenger can thank Henry for saving him the embarrassment of being prematurely knocked out of another competition. But if Arsenal supporters are happy to settle for an empty trophy case and mediocrity, then that’s exactly what we’re going to get. I think the fans deserve a lot more than just qualifying for the Champions League. We’ve done it for 14 years straight now and haven’t won that either. There should be a lot more to this game than just money.

From Peterborough, just about 60 minutes from Arsenal's ground. I remember going to Highbury when growing up and after my Uncle's stepson Mark Heeley joined the Gunners from Peterborough when he was just 17 back in the 1970s. Currently cover sports (mainly football, boxing, and ice hockey) for various sites and magazines. Still see most of the games when in Canada. In fact, they get more EPL matches there than in Britain.

Very short sighted article. Firstly, Leeds were always good for a shock result. They knocked United out in the third round a few seasons back!

Money makes the world go round…especially football. Its big business and we all have to understand that no matter how painful it is.

I think you are looking at the negative in AW’s comments. I think mid week champs league football is essential for the fans and most would agree.

If you were true arsenal you would have simply enjoyed ‘The Return of the King’!

Absolutely stupid post. Compared to the Champions League and Premiership, the FA cup is small fry. It is a chance for teams like Leeds and even worse hackers to have a few minutes of fame and perhaps maim some EPL player on the way. (usually without penalty like the guy who shoulder charged Arsharvin face right under the refs nose last night)

Henry saved Wenger from nothing. He came because he was asked to by Wenger, and went on when Wenger told him to and did the job Wenger asked him to do. Full Stop! The fact that he was Henry made it special for everyone. Well except you obviously….sports writer in Canada….well that would be about right.

When you look at the history books you can see Arsenal have won nothing since 2005. Nothing. Not a sausage. Some fans and the manager make a great deal of us having qualified for the ECL fourteen years on the trot. We came close once to winning the ECL – once in 14 years. That’s hardly a great achievement. I can’t see us winning it this year either but I can see and would like to see us winning the FA Cup. We need silverware in the Highbury House boardroom. I’m fed up of us always being the bridesmaid…

I enjoyed the Henry comeback and goal like all gooners but why the hysteria? We have a problem scoring goals against lesser opposition at home. Everton, Fulham, Wolves and now Leeds. Jack and Diaby will be back soon but after so long out there are no guarantees they will contribute much this season. I’ve not been impressed with Ramsey or Rosicky so far. Wenger needs to get a creative midfielder, a full back on loan and a striker. This blind loyalty to a manager who has no ambition beyond finishing 4th is a joke. He needs to get the players we need to transform this into winners!! Love seeing Henry back but isn’t the long term answer.

I think this is a good article. All  the AKB’s on this site obviously are not interested in silverware.I suppose it’s all about having a good bank balance… if that’s modern football at the highest level I’d rather watch League 1

Unfortunately a good bank balance is necessary unless you have a sugar daddy, getting the balance is the difficult bit,to make a statement that suggests any manager isn’t interested in silverware is naive.

He may have said the fa cup was not that important but walcott and van persie aside he went on to pick our strongest possible team. lets not forget who was unavailable sagna mertesacker vermaelen santos jenkinson djourou bartley gibbs wilshire diaby frimpong lansbury denilson rosicky gervinho bendtner vela campbell fabianski mannone watt and almunia plus a few young players that may also have got the nod on a different day with different opposition.

ok the performance was disjointed but leeds have in the last few years drawn with us and spurs and won at old trafford. they are no mugs just very good at spoiling a match which they almost succeeded in doing last night until king henry ll returned with a trademark finish.

    roll on sunday

Awful post written by either a child or someone who has no sense of reality. To think wenger doesn’t value the cup is ridiculous. The fact is that in modern day football, like most things in life, has priorities. For arsenal it’s simple, league and Europe come first. Any arsenal fan with any sense of realism understands this. Yes we want to win trophies, but If that’s at the cost of European qualification then most fans will pass. Idiotic post….. Get real.

Glad you said it because I was certainly going to, that side had more than enough experience to hump an awful Leeds team into submission and it looked average at best, fair play to Henry a fantastic moment for all concerned but jesus it doesn’t get any worse than a 34 year old has been showing Wengers current flops how it’s done, Arshavin is just shit !

In the event of him looking average his followers (me included) will just allow for his age, as Arsene said because of his glowing past nothing will be taken away from him and bear in mind he wasn’t match fit last night but exsperience has taught him where to be at the right time and plaudits should also go to Song for picking out the pass.

Great article and my thoughts are the same. I’m a poor, American college student and a die-hard gunner. I’ve never been to an Arsenal match but it is a goal to get to one soon. I’d give anything to go to any arsenal match, whether it’s a Carling cup, FA, league match or Champions. The last thing I’d ever want is to travel all the way, spend all my money and then later find out the boss wasn’t very concerned with winning…. Come’on it’s highest level of football in the world, play EVERY game to the fullest!!!

If you think “the Boss” is not concerned about winning you obviously have never watched an Arsenal game on the TV, the man is constantly ridiculed by the shitheads or more commonly known as sportswriters for his pitchside actions such as kicking at water bottles or crouching in despair. Die hard gunner? You don’t know the meaning of the term son as many fans on here could testify for watching Arsenal pre-Wenger.
