Seven good minutes enough for Arsenal

The Arsenal fans want to win the FA Cup

Three goals in seven second half minutes – that’s all it took for Arsenal to win a game in which they were otherwise unimpressive. While the comeback was miraculous and the result crucial, many problems still remain.

As has been the case for the last month or so, Arsenal started at a pedestrian pace. While Aston Villa did not create much, neither did we, and that’s always a risk with such an error-prone defence.

Lukasz Fabianski started the game and very quickly looked nervous and indecisive, reminding us of the big game temperament he is so lacking. Why Arsene Wenger likes to rest his first choice goalkeeper for cup games is beyond me. In the end, however, Fabianski wasn’t the main problem.

Villa’s first came from a well-worked corner routine, but Richard Dunne still rose unchallenged to head home, which just isn’t good enough. Per Mertesacker was also at fault in the build-up, wandering too far out of defence forcing Koscielny to concede the corner. The fact that such an experienced international can look so lost when he comes here shows it is not about the players but the coaching. No matter how many millions we might spend on defenders in the transfer market, the problem won’t go away unless we change our training routines, or some of the coaching staff. The likes of Swansea and Everton, in 13th and 14th place respectively, have not spent big money on defenders but have conceded fewer goals than us.

The second, and what looked at the time like the killer goal, came right on half time from Darren Bent. Villa got us on the break and, to be fair, it was a great finish from a tight angle after his initial shot was well-saved by Fabianski. Boos rang out as the half time whistle went, as there was just nothing positive about Arsenal’s play at all, and seemingly no way back; we weren’t creating anything and Villa scored from their only two chances.

At this point on Twitter, I said: “Would take a hell of a team talk from Wenger to turn this around. Sadly, I think he lost the dressing room ages ago.”

And yet, 15 minutes after the start of the second half we were winning. We looked a different side, pouring forward and running at players, playing at a pace that Villa simply could not deal with. Obviously Wenger hasn’t LOST the dressing room, as such, but it deeply concerns me that we can’t play like this when it’s 0-0, or when we’re a goal up.

Sadly after our 3rd goal, we slowed down tremendously again and allowed Villa back into it. Their confidence should have been at rock-bottom at that point and if we’d carried on at that pace we could perhaps have killed the game off with a 4th or a 5th, but once again we just put the brakes on and gave our opponents confidence that they could snatch an equaliser.

I don’t know what I can say other than that this team confuses me. I don’t know if it’s the manager or the players, I don’t know how they can go so quickly from slow, boring, indecisive football to fast and exciting, and then back again. I don’t know why they cannot find the motivation to kill opponents off and add to a lead, rather than hold onto it for dear life. We are so much better at attacking than defending, so why not keep attacking? Why put pressure on a defence that can’t handle pressure?

At least we won this one. A 4th straight defeat and an exit from the only trophy we are likely to challenge for would have been a bit of a disaster. Hopefully now the players will be feeling a bit better about themselves and get back to winning ways in the league.

Another positive is that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was given a start and, once again, showed that he is capable of making things happen. I wouldn’t say he was even at his best today, but talented players can still produce moments that scare defenders and lift the crowd. His confidence with the ball at his feet and the vision of his passes is a real asset. Chamberlain on a bad day is definitely worth more than Walcott or Arshavin on a bad day.

Bolton away next. I’d take 3 points any way they come but it would be nice not to have to go two goals down for this one!

I'm 23-years-old and currently living in Bristol, studying to be a journalist. I've been hooked on Arsenal since I was about 10, and as much as I sometimes wish I could stop, I can't give them up. Favourite player of all time would have to be Patrick Vieira for the sheer passion with which he played the game.

Result still only papers over the cracks. Why we havent signed anyone is a joke. Good to see Sagna back. Our defence is a joke.

No No No our defence was not a joke.. lets give our boys some respect for comming back from 2 goals down and our beloved manager because without him we would not have been in the champions league year in year out and have played such pretty football.

Jenny theres a deal on, 2 for 1 at specsavers. Just because a team gives us two penalties to bring us back into a game, you beleive that we have to give respect. I give respect to players like the Ox that never stopped running at their defence. Players like Walcott annoy me. He scores a lucky goal and then he runs to the sideline to do a dance. I cant wait til Jack comes back. It will add more steel to the team. Too many pretty boys in Arsenal. To be fair Rosiky and Ramsey did put in shift. Wenger is the cause that we are faultering. He had his chance to strenghten the team when everyone knows we needed to. But then again we have blind supporters like you who dont see his errors. He is a brillaint manager, no doubt about it. What he has done for us is remarkable. But he has to be held responsible for the drivel players that he persists with. And the tip tappy football that we see every week that has no end product. He persisits with players that shouldnt get on a Championship side never mind Arsenal. If he bought bad players then he needs to grow a set and drop them. Look at Daglish last week and then look at the results his team got this week. No wonder why we always faulter this time of year as the players know that this mundane no end product passes with Wenger.

Perhaps a bit harsh when you consider the injuries, but yes he brought in players of a sub standard nature instead of people like Cahill and Samba, Tiote, or Demba Ba, being honest I still don’t think a fully fit squad compares with the other top4 teams, you just don’t have the firepower and flair to unlock good defences, even chelsea have a sturridge, Drogba, Torres(ok i know but capable) Mata, Lampard, Ramires, you have RVP, a young kid in Oxo and now I’m struggling..without rvp you would be mid table at best..god you have been so fotunate to keep him fit..one injury and you really are fucked !

Sorry Jenny but your deluded. Wenger was once a decent manager but not anymore. Should have gone two or three years ago. This club needs a fresh start not the same old dross we’ve been served the last couple of years. You might love him but I sure as hell don’t!

I cannot understand why Wenger didnt go the extra couple of quid and sign the superb Cahill before the season started.  He would still have cost less than he paid for Mertesacker  and we would have had another warrior like Vermaelen. Mertesacker looks totally lost in the PL.  His height was supposed to have cured our weakness at corners and crosses – has it heck.  You have to be in the right position to use that height, he just wanders around aimlessly.  I just hope that when our proper full backs return, 1) there will be less crosses coming in anyway and 2) Koscielny and Vermaelen with be the central defenders.
The other Arsenal employee who looks lost these day is Arsene Wenger who seems bereft of ideas.  His faith in sub-standard players like Arshavin this year is pathetic.  It threw the Man Utd game away when when we were getting on top and he brought Cantbearsedshavin on in place of the rampaging Ox.  That was the final turning point for me and I believe a lot of other supporters too.  ‘Arsene Knows Best’ certainly looked a ridiculous statement at that point. It seems like just fantasy talk but a Wenger/Mourinho swap could well be what we need

Mourinho could be an option but he would want funds with a squad like that, as you pont out several are just not good enough, and if the board won’t financially support a man who is rightly Arsenals greatest ever manager why would they back Mourinho..I think he will go to spurs if he goes anywhere in London I really do, they are nearly there right now and it would get right up the noses of of Roman and co, as for Mertsacker you are spot on, the bloke is hopeless, you must always look at who is behind the goals being conceded, and 9 times out of 10 his positional sense is to blame, even swansea away big gaping holes for people to run into..just not good enough and better teams will punish you with him in the starting line up…he is ok for a tussle with a kevin davies next week, but i suspect Coyle will try and exploit the lack of pace rather than play into Arsenals hands, if they get at you guys like they did Liverpool it could be an uncomfortable afternoon.

Where’s the logic in your assertion that Mourinho wont go to Arsenal, because of the shortage of funds, and so would go to Spuds instead.  There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Levy has money available.  ’Arry has been linked with any number of high profile signings without getting any of them.  Let’s face it the only signing has been the loan of the mercenary from City and you can’t even pay his wages.

With your pissy little hovel of a ground, you’re having to go cap in hand to the Mayor of London to get a few quid before even thinking of building a new stadium.

When it actually comes to shelling out for the construction there won’t be a penny to spend on new players.

Spuds will be reduced to begging for loan players from the big boys for a decade.

Ok mouthy lets look at some facts, cap in hand or not we have a real need to move into a bigger stadium, our waiting list sits at 25,000 fans, We are losing money hand over fist all the while we sit in that pissy little hovel, you are clearly one bitter old man who does not even look at the bigger picture with any intelligence, we are 10 points clear of you with far superior players on half the budget, you will sit there today hoping old skin flint signs someone knowing Spurs will strengthen further, and the whole time your flase economy is eating away at you, huge bills, vacant seats everywhere, slip sliding down the table and every week that goes by your name is a distant memory with being Englands finest run club, having the type of conversation is pointless because you strike me as the type of fan (not that you are if norfolk is considered too far to travel to matches) who is too tight to pay for ESPN and see the empty stadium for yourself anyway..you lot are like a man going to cash converters trying to keep your head above water each month, we are flying high with double the revenue around the corner..we havent spent our champ league money yet..you won’t get anymore for ages ! keep chasing !

I don’t understand it either, Wenger was quite capable of doing what Chelsea done and waiting for the price to drop and then enter the market, how do you know he didn’t ? perhaps now people look at Arsenal when they are linked with other top flight clubs and feel it is a huge risk to their career regarding top european football

Here’s a list of ‘Arry’s transfer targets.  Adebayor £8 mil permanent move (can’t afford his wages), Rodallega, Mario Marin, Samba, Junior Hoilett.  That’s only today’s list as they appear in the papers.

How many of those are going to be signed?  Your the tipster you set the odds.
