Merson and Robson latest ex-Arsenal players to air their opinions

It seems like anybody who’s ever worn an Arsenal shirt is coming out of the woodwork these days to give their opinion on what ails the club. Former Gunners Paul Merson and Stewart Robson are the latest to chime in on the current state of affairs at Emirates Stadium and the performance of the team and manager Arsene Wenger.

The Daily star ran an article that quoted Merson, who played 289 league matches with the team from 1985 to 1997, as saying, “This is bordering on the end of an era for Arsenal. Another two years and he (Wenger) will probably leave Arsenal like Bruce Rioch left here. Seriously. That’s the way it goes. This has got to change. It’s an absolute joke.”

Merson said the only way for Wenger to save his reputation is to start paying some money for world-class players. He feels if new players aren’t brought into the squad then the booing, which Wenger suffered at home against Manchester United in their 2-1 loss, could continue. He added that if things don’t turn around for the club soon then Wenger’s reputation could eventually be destroyed.

Merson said even though Wenger’s been the most successful manager in modern-day Arsenal history, he could end up being called a flop by some of the team’s supporters and especially by its critics. He compares the situation to Bruce Rioch, who was sacked after just a solitary season as manager back in 1996.

Comparing Wenger to Rioch is a bit of a stretch though considering the Frenchman’s won three FA Cups, and three league championships while he’s been in charge and has led the club to the Champions League each year since his arrival. However, as Merson points out, all of the trophies were won in the first half of Wenger’s managerial reign and the cupboard’s been bare for the past six seasons.

The 43-year-old Merson, who also played for England, said it’s pretty hard to criticize Wenger since he’s done so much for the football club overall, but six years is quite a long period and a lot of football fans have pretty short memories. The ex-winger said it doesn’t look like the team’s going to end the drought this season and the odds of making the Champions League look to be quite slim.

Merson, like former Arsenal manager George Graham and thousands of supporters, feel the only way to change the status quo is to finally start spending some money. He said if Wenger refuses to buy anybody then the club’s upper management should get rid of him. He added that one of the reasons the club left Highbury Stadium and built a new home at the Emirates was to increase attendance and then use the revenue to bring in new and good players.

“Name me one top-drawer player they have brought in since?” Merson asked. “When they were at Highbury, they had Bergkamp, Vieira, Petit, Overmars, Ljungberg, Henry and Pires. Where are they all now? It’s an absolute disgrace. The board have got to say to Arsene, ‘Right, there is this much money, spend it. And if you’re not going to spend it, someone else has to come in and do it’.”

Stewart Robson, another former Arsenal player, who now gives his opinion on TalkSport and hosts a show on Arsenal TV, said the current relationship between the supporters on the terraces and Wenger is at an all-time low and it could lead to an eventual end to the manager’s stint. Robson feels that the supporters of any other football club would have voiced their displeasure over results and transfers a long time ago, but Arsenal supporters were willing to give Wenger the benefit of doubt.

Robson, who debuted for the Gunners at the tender age of 17 and played in 186 games for the club, said the criticism of Wenger has generally been quiet up to now and most of it dealt with the lack of transfers. However, the infamous substitution of Andrey Arshavin for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the loss to Man United seemingly opened the floodgates. Robson now feels the unhappiness the supporters feel about the direction the club is going in could be crucial to Wenger’s job.

Robson stated in the article, “Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis said at the beginning of the season in one of the general meetings that we will never get rid of Arsene Wenger, he is here for life, although if the relationship with the supporters becomes so bad we might have to look at it again. The relationship with supporters is getting worse. Their reaction to the Oxlade-Chamberlain substitution wasn’t just about that, it was because they are unhappy with how the season has gone so far. They’re very frustrated that Arsenal aren’t going to challenge for the league title this year and that substitution was the culmination of a lot of anger that has been vented towards Arsene Wenger.”

Wenger finally made another move in the current transfer market by shelling out a reported 400,000 pounds on 19-year-old midfielder Thomas Eisfeld from Dortmund of the German Bundesliga. According to reports, he’s made just one appearance for the senior side so far this season, but has six goals in 12 matches for the club’s under-19 team. He’s young and cheap, which makes him Wenger’s ideal player. But the majority of reaction by fans across the internet today towards the signing hasn’t been too complimentary to the manager.

From Peterborough, just about 60 minutes from Arsenal's ground. I remember going to Highbury when growing up and after my Uncle's stepson Mark Heeley joined the Gunners from Peterborough when he was just 17 back in the 1970s. Currently cover sports (mainly football, boxing, and ice hockey) for various sites and magazines. Still see most of the games when in Canada. In fact, they get more EPL matches there than in Britain.

Wenger only had success when he bought great players. It’s time to replace Fab and Nasri with Hazard and Dempsey which wouldn’t cost as much as we got for selling them together. If Wenger won’t listen to the Arsenal nation which is screaming for experienced quality players now then he is deaf and dumb and should be sacked. If he can hear us he should leave.

merson named a few of world class players, how many of them were known before they were brought to AFC?i`m almost sure that he`s not given enough money to buy what we fans want and the reason is simple: andy carroll 35 mils torres 50 mil so how much should we fork out to buy the WORLD CLASS PLAYER that the hole world(yes WORLD) is talking about?

The Torres/Carroll deal was not a typical deal because liverpool needed 15 million excess to cover other signings (to net out transfers up to that point) so they asked newcastle about the price and newcastle obviously came back with a high amount and liverpool went to chelsea and asked for 50million which they were given.
Nobody is asking for us to spend crazy amounts of money. We could have got Mata for 18 million but again we didn’t complete the deal and the clause in mata’s contract expired and chelsea got him for 24 million. We don’t get transfers completed early for some reason…negotiating for small amounts of money doesn’t make sense if we end up losing the player or getting the player on the last day of the window and losing points throughout the transfer window. We could have purchased Ozil before he went to real madrid but didn’t. There are plenty of quality players that we can get without spending crazy sums of money.
Let me ask you one question….do we not have the funds or are quality players not available that would give us better reserve striker options than Chamakh and Park?
I hate to say it but compare Spurs’ squad to ours and compare our wage bill to theirs. They seem to attract decent enough players while spending half on wages.
Considering Santos is out for months and we cannot rely on gibbs b.c he is injury prone while didn’t we pick up a fullback (even buying a player is cheap compared to losing out on champions league money). Imagine signing a fullback at the beginning of january and having them play in the matches we lost (3 lost in the league).
I would love Wenger to stay and be successful (I don’t even care about trophies…just want a competitive squad that give 100%).  With small changes we could be so much better – I just don’t think it will happen b/c wenger is set in his ways.

what part is wrong then ? when is this bubble going to burst ? accept what the majority on here are saying, you are being outsmarted by a club on less revenue with a better manager, now take a long hard look at the dealings of Redknapp yesterday, he is a genius, he got rid of 4 players who have spent all season trying to derail the team and their team mates, Bassong, Pav, Pienaar, Corluka, all sent packing because being motivated is what makes you good and also being coached properly, we have brought in a couple of ok ish players of equality i suppose you might say who will be ready to have a go and get in the team spirit..brilliant management, old tight wad wenger could do with learning how to offload a few like that himself, I am sure Fabianski, Squeelacci, Chamakh, are pulling up trees in training…Bale one trick pony ? that just about sums the knowledge of a very  very small number on here the rest can see what is happening and have every right to want wenger out !

I think you’re right on motivation, that is the biggest problem at AFC, yes injuries have played a very large part in dictating our season however the comeback against villa proved what many of us have been saying that the team are pampered, which obviously is down to AW, he has to get tougher with the under performers and have a clear out in the summer.

An additional problem is their wages, at the level some are capable of they are way overpaid so the likes of Bolton, Wiagn etc where they may be suited to can’t afford their wages so why should they move on.

We need to get tough but I’ve yet to see this with Wenger, as much as he has moved a few on they seemed to linger at the club for too long.

Wenger had a great run, he had a group of french players who rules world football, being french helped in this cause, now that france are shit isnt it a coincidence that Arsenal are too..his signings just stink of a man who has lost direction and focus..he was a true great but now he is in danger of doing a venables and losing his reputation rapidly

Yes Wenger needs to spend but its not as simple as you might think. First Merson talks about world class players like Bergkamp, Vieira, Petit, Overmars, Ljungberg, Henry and Pires. These players were not bought for 35 or 40 million pounds, far from it in fact….They were generally unknown and he and his coaching team made them stars at Arsenal.

Secondly you must appreciate that whilst Arsene has funds to spend he will not spend unless he can get players that will improve the squad. Injuries aside Arsenal’s best 11 are a formidable team….right. This season we have been decimated with defensive injuries.

Unless you have endless funds available to spend ala ManC Arsene (all managers in fact) face the following issues when looking for players to buy.

    1. Is the player we want available.
    2. Does the player want to come to England/Arsenal.
    3. What does the player do to the minimum number of English (home-grown) players we must have?
    4. Can we agree a reasonable transfer fee? (eg Torres at 50m is ridiculous)
    5. Can we afford the players wage demands (too much and it can disrupt other players)
    6.  Pass a medical?

Think for a minute about players like Nasri, Hleb, Flamini . At their new clubs they warm the bench. Big wages only appease players for a while, and soon they realise all they want to do is play regular first team football in the best competitions. A players window of play at the top level is short

A manager cannot predict losing both L and R backs at the same time. And you cannot buy 3 top flight R backs for example just incase injuries like this may happen. Otherwise you end up with stars sitting on the bench.

Having said that given Wilsheres injury set back I am hoping Wenger buys a quality attacking midfielder. IMO I also hope wenger buys a quality striker to assist RVP.

I used to think like this but the fact that the same things happen season after season shows us that it its our own (Arsenal/Wenger) fault. Fans are not asking to spend big like city because we know we can’t afford it but think about signing bergkamp in 1996 for 7.5 million and henry in 99 for 11 million. That was decent money back then and we haven’t really increased spending to keep up with current prices.  Players for 15-20 million that can improve the squad (im not talking about spending 100 million).

As for finding players, I find it hard to believe with the scouting network we have and the fact that we are a well know london club in the champions league that we can’t find quality players to play here. Your point on spending on wages and not disrupting the current players is exactly whats wrong with arsenal. Our payroll is huge but we don’t have the top quality players to show for it because there are too many players earning far too much…what has diaby done to deserve 60k per week? that is crazy money for a injury prone player. Compare the spurs squad to ours and compare the wage bill…ours is double theirs. Players like walcott asking for 90-100k per week is crazy considering he isn’t worth it.

The biggest issue I have with your post is the injuries part. We always have lots of injuries and we always use it as an excuse and expect not to have injuries the following season. The injuries are a direct result of having a small squad (im talking about the actual number of quality players that can play in our first eleven at a decent level). We can’t rely on on players like diaby. Bendtner, Denilson are still on the books and players like Park are not good enough. I’m convinced Park was signed for commercial reasons b/c he can only stay with us for 2 years before national duty and hasn’t featured much. Not having a proper reserve striker will come back to hurt us if RvP gets injured (big risk considering he is playing most matches). Lack of rotation in midfield means song and ramsay will be playing in the red by the end of the season and will be at risk of injury. As for the defense…we couldn’t not have seen 4 full backs injured but we know that gibbs is injury prone and have never stayed fit for longer than 8 games so we knew that we can’t rely on our reserve left back.  Our reserve right back is an unexperienced youngster from charlton so not sure how we can have him as our number 1 reserve at right back. Give this we only have 2 experienced fullbacks and having injuries/rotating them should have been planned considering they can’t play every match.

Think about replacing our injury prone players and dead-weight with decent squad players that can come into the first team and do a decent job.  This will allow wenger to rotate the team to keep players fresh and avoid players playing in the red and maybe we will finally finish a season strong rather than dropping off every season. There is a reason why man u finish the season strong.

God, but this really grates on me. Of course we can’t compete With the likes of Man City, Chelsea and the like. But a club like Arsenal should be able to invest more wisely in players than it has recently. Mertasacker is not a great center half and I do believe that there were better options out there at the time. Likewise with Santos and Arteta. I never have been able to get my head around the Park transfer and why does Wenger persist with injury prone players like Gibbs and Diaby. Wenger will not walk and he certainly won’t be sacked so we are stuck with him. I would loved to be proved wrong but I can’t see us challenging for the title again while he is in charge, ditto with C/L qualification and winning any silverware. Spurs have proved – with the right man in charge who KNOWS how to motivate a team – that you don’t have to spend big to compete.
Wenger is no longer the man for the job. His performance this season proves that. But I would still love him to prove me wrong.

Good comment. I would love for wenger to stay at arsenal and win with this team. It seems like fans, ex-players and media can see what we need but wenger cannot. I think he actually knows what is needed but won’t spend on the quality we need because it will leave him with no excuses for failing (he can’t blame money etc.).
We all know that with small changes can have a big impact on this team. We don’t expect spending like city but replacing injury prone players and dead-weight with good squad players will go a long way.  The fact that we have 1 quality striker at the club sums up our problem. Having a decent first 11 and a crappy squad means over playing players and causing injuries.
Not qualifying for champs league should be the end for wenger because chelsea are average this year (I still think we will get 4th but need players to return and need RvP to stay fit). The poor start to the season was down to him…we all knew we had tough matches at the start of the season so why wasn’t a squad in place at the start of the season? you don’t need to wait till the last day of the window. Our injuries are also down to him indirectly because we have a weak squad which he assembled and it makes him play the same players with no rotation. I’m worried that our central defenders, Song, Ramsay and RvP will break down because of overplaying.

All this and ticket price increase last year and reporting increase this coming year means that the fans are being taken advantage of.  We already pay the most out of any football team in the world. I wouldn’t mind if it resulted in a better squad but making money from transfers and having increases in ticket prices doesn’t make sense to me.

The directors that sold their shares made money from having wenger not spend on the team and rely on youth. The club having more cash in the bank means the value of the club increases by a multiple. As long as wenger makes money from transfers he has a job for life. Problem is that our players don’t by into wenger’s vision so his faith in them is not rewarded. Players will keep leaving by stalling on new deals or staying on huge contracts that may not be deserved (if reports are right theo wants 90-100k which is crazy).
For all the talk of wenger being an economist (because of his degree) he fails to realize that we need to stay in the champions league and have a couple of highly marketable/popular players because our main sponsorship deals are up in the next 1-2 years.  These deals should bring in another 20 million per year but who will pay top dollar on a declining team with no stars (if RvP leaves this summer).

I had this conversation with myself after I was laughed at by 3 West Ham colleagues after our recent 3 match defeats.

Question: Why would not the manager sell six current players, some on loan and buy 4 class player to strengthen the squad?

Short term it would make sense, Arsenal would be able to match the likes of the Manchester teams n be top dog in London once again. The only problem with that is what do you do with the likes of Ramsey, Frimpong, AOC, Coquelin, Migel, Gibbs, Carl Jenkinson, Benik Afobe. Chuks Aneke, Yennaris, Ryo and a long list waiting to claim first team places?

I do not know if Merson is watching what is taking place? Wenger has to make the transition very soon for these lads are competiting with the seasoned professionals and holding their own. Even Merson himself if he was aged 26 now and still at Arsenal would find it tough to retain his first team position.

Here is Wenger’s delema: Should I spend £20m on a left or right back or wait a season and have two home grown players with sufficient experience to fill that role?

Is it wiser to build a squad to play with the likes of OAC n Wilshere or take the short term approach and spend £60M on two players and loose the building programme which is nearly complete? Hard for me to admit this, but dig up the already laid foundations via the academy.

Why Thomas Eisfeld? A necessary part of the building we do not have. If he proves to have the necessary quality, it would otherwise cost £30M – £50M to bring in a player for that position. The value of players tend to rise, when Arsenal comes knocking.

I want my team to win trophies as much as anyone. But if teams are to become self financing the model has to change.

What Merson, Graham and others have not considered is the Huge investment we put in the Academy? Not many teams in the world would be able to go on spending BiG monies

Ha Ha, “we are a feeder club”….tosh!

Fabregas returned to his boyhood club, he always said he would some day, even when AFC were challenging the top, Na$ri went for the money, so did Clichy…but wait a minute perhaps it was for the silverware, even if that means sitting on the bench for it in Na$ri’s case. Szczesny and Jack to my knowledge have shown no desire to leave, big deal if Theo goes, he’s hardly living up to expectation and RvP like the other three has reiterated his desire to retain AW at AFC.

As for who will come to us IF we’re not in the CL…who knows, ManC, ManU and the chavs can’t have all of the top players, some will relish the challenge to get back into it IF we’re out, clubs do attract top players when they’re not in the CL. Maybe Guardiola is stalling on his contract at Barca cos he fancies the challenge at Arsenal, maybe Wenger has had a word with him.

Something few people seem to take into account, when berating clubs for not spending cash, the availability of players to spend that cash on.

It’s generally accepted that Arsenal need a left-back, the only one of note to change club in January was Wayne Bridge, a player who has appeared in less than a handful of games for Man City in the last two years.  Would the Arsenal faithful have been dancing in the streets if Wenger had splashed the cash on him and his £100,000+ per week wages?

The Arsenal fans have been crying out for a striker, have you looked at the strikers to change club in this window?  Zammora Fulham to QPR, Jelavic from Glasgow Rangers to Everton, Pavyluchenko from Spuds to some Russian outfit, Oh! and from Everton to Spuds  Saha ha ha ha.  would we have been throwing our collective hat in the air if Wenger had signed any of them?

Maybe Wenger is a bit too loyal to his players, maybe one or two, maybe more, should have been moved on to make room in the squad and to free up some wages.  At least Arshavin seems to be moving towards the exit door, and considerably faster than he has moved on the pitch recently.

There may well be a reluctance to spend money on the part of the manager and the club but, there may just not have been players of the requisite standard available.

Would the disaffected fans have been any happier if Wenger had followed ‘Arry’s example and bought a has been like Saha ha ha.  I don’t think so!

Just why anyone would take notice of what Merson has to say on any subject what-so-ever is beyond me. He has held a grudge against Wenger ever since the manager dumped him for the very good reason of his, shall we say, refuelling habits.

I agree,Merson is just scaremongering now, even last night on Sky Sports he was overreacting.saying if we dont get top 4 where finished.Spurs did not get top 4 last season are they finished or Liverpool.Sure it will be a big setback if we dont reach top 4,however not the end of the World, sure even 4th doesnt secure CL proper.

Utter nonsense, Arsenal should be attracting Baines, Enrique, Abidal, they are a big club, very naive to suggest Wayne Bridge is the only option, when Arsenal come calling you listen, or is it just that they aint that big a deal anymore and everyone can see it except you JIN ? I like the little giggle at Saha but let me tell you if he was put clean through like Walcott was last night he would not be fluffing that one, look within and see there is some real shit that gives you no right to laugh at players like Saha at all.

Just where did Baines, Enrique and Abidal move to?

Why exactly have I no right to laugh at players like Saha ha ha?

        You’re talking shit as usual.

you have lived up here too long, if Arsenal are not capable of getting players from other clubs by dropping in a bid then we may as well all go home and pack the game up..do you think people only sign when they are deemed ready to be sold ? right now several clubs are working on RVP and will raid you lot in the summer if they adopt your route and wait for wenger to announce he can go they will be there forever..unreal lack of football knowledge…all of the above either are or were open to offers for a club like arsenal..Jagielka, Cahill, Samba, Brown, ..you could Paul Pogba from United right now if you tried, he is the new Viera (look him up you won’t know who I mean) ..but wenger just sits there like a tit

Jagielka, Cahill, Samba and Brown, none of them are better than Koscielny and Vermaelen so why would Wenger want to buy them?

Pogba? didn’t see a queue of clubs lining up to sign him, not even Old ‘Arry, but then he can only get decent players on loan because the Spuds can’t afford the wages and he has to go for has-beens like Saha ha ha.

You’re still talking shit and becoming totally boring while you do so.

and you still lack knowledge, back up , back up, your main fault this season, lack of decent squad players, so why the hell do they need to be better than Kos or Vermallen ..and last time i checked your players were leaving you because you don’t pay wages either in company with big clubs, so what is your point exactly apart from being bitter ?

Six years, sorry seven without a cup to show for it is disgraceful for one of the UKs top teams. Wenger must go and before any more of his histrionics.
