Wenger: Cautious Spending Owes More to Recession than to Financial Fair Play

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that lukewarm nature of the recently concluded winter transfer window is a clear sign that European clubs are now unable to match their previously sky-high spending levels.

The veteran Gunners boss compared the business conducted in January 2012 to the spending frenzy that took place same time last year, when more than £100 million were splashed by Chelsea and Liverpool on the purchase of just a handful of players.

While January 2011 had certainly generated some crazy business, things were very much under control this time around, with no major money transfer taking place. The month’s highest spending English club weren’t a title challenger and not even someone trying to boost their European chances by offering silly money. Instead, it was the relegation battlers Queens Park Rangers who spent the most, with Djibril Cisse and Bobby Zamora being the most high-profile of their signings.

Wenger was expected to bring in reinforcements for their troubled fullback position in January as all of their first-choice right-backs and left-backs are currently out injured. But the Frenchman brought in a little-known 19-year old midfielder named Thomas Eisfeld, who never played a professional game for his former club Borussia Dortmund and has a history of suffering career-threatening knee injuries.

The Arsenal boss, whose nickname in the British media is Le Professeur, believes that this new trend of moderate spending is there to stay due to the anticipation of Financial Fair Play (FFP) and Europe’s general economic problems.

Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website Arsenal.com, Wenger said, “The figures show you [that there is more caution]. You must say as well that you had big transfers last year with Torres, Carroll and David Luiz. This package alone was about £100 million, but still there is a significant difference because we are in a recession period and everybody suffers.”

“I don’t know if you have seen the numbers in Europe but [according to a Uefa report on football clubs] there are €1.6 billion [£1.34 bn] losses, that’s not debt but losses. That is absolutely amazing. That means tomorrow if you had to stop your activity, half of Europe would be bankrupt.”

“It means that football has to respond and I don’t know if financial fair play will come in, but it looks like economically the whole of Europe is becoming a bit more cautious.”

In his interview, the 62-year old schemer mentioned Torres, Carroll and Luiz, a trio whose stock has fallen significantly in the past twelve months due to their poor performances. But one player whose value is rising with every match he plays is Arsenal captain Robin van Persie. The classy striker scored twice in his side’s come-from-behind win over Aston Villa on Sunday and is now level with his fellow Dutchman Dennis Bergkamp on Arsenal’s all-time leading goal-scorer chart.

Wenger was quick to lavish praise on van Persie after he achieved yet another personal milestone.

“What is amazing is that you look at the number of games Robin has played and the number of goals scored, and [his record] becomes absolutely top, top class. You have national class, international class and world class, and Robin is world class,” he said.

Wenger, how long do you think that we will have this world class striker? Always a story and no action. Everyone knows we need reinforcement due to the players that we lost and the crap that you bought arent simply up to it. Even Jacks news coming out the day after the window closes stinks to the high heavens. Total sell out, and you blame the recession. Wait till you see next season, how many season tickets will be sold. And it will all down to you and the Wanky Yanks. You cant see the implications of your pig headed penny pinching. You may as well go and work in Greece or Italy. They need you there. Another two points dropped when we could easliy have gained ground.

In the grand scheme of things big clubs are about long term success and survival and this difficult period is no different to trophyless periods Arsenal has had in its long and proud history.

Yes we are now 7th on the table and in danger of missing Europa let alone UCL but what you doom and gloomers fail to realise is that the team that is currently sitting equal top, ManC, whose total player value makes Arsenals look like pocket change, is also dropping points. (remarkably)

Its not just about spending ridiculous amounts of pounds, its about balance given the economic climate (Europe and Global) and our clubs current  financial position. Its true that Arsenal FC made the decision to build a world class stadium to match it with the big clubs across Europe. Arsenal management is working hard to pay it off quickly, but that requires financial restraints. Couple this with a GFC in 2008 sparked in US, followed by the financial collapse of the Euro zone in 2010 and the need to curb spending and consolidate becomes even greater. This is the same for any business not just football clubs.

So in this latest winter window, who spend millions to improve? We didn’t ofcourse but surprisingly ManU who desperately need a Midfielder didn’t either, in fact they sign Scholes!!! ManC with their Billionaire owner………. purchased nothing, Chelsea? well they only signed Dunn (quite cheaply I might add)….Why do you think that is???

Those that bag their club or players or manager, need to go and support another club….Truely!!

Wenger is supposed to be a top manager yet he cannot manage the players he has. This thing about not being able to compete with Man City is just a convenient excuse for HIS failings. I’m not advocating spending fortunes on one player, but what I am saying is that paying moderate money for players such as Mertasacker, Arteta and Arsharvin is just as wasteful. I can longer get behind Wenger but what I don’t get is for all of you who still do support him what it is you expect him to achieve next season? His outlook is not going to change, is tactics and motivational skills are going to be the same as they have been this season. We won’t win the FA Cup or C/L and we won’t reach the top four either. So where do we go from here? He’s just bought a young, untested German with a history of injuries. Was that the type of signing we really needed?

Of course Wenger is flawed, we all are and maybe he needs to correct some of those flaws, maybe he is without broadcasting it but chucking millions at a team doesn’t guarantee results. Personally I’d like to see changes in the coaching staff but not by sacking him at the moment, decisions between himself and the board need to be done at the end of the season.

On Pardew, wasn’t Hughton also doing a greeat job with the barcodes? Maybe it’s the mentality of our team that needs adjusting and as I said we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes and Wenger is naturally protective, perhaps too protective but there you go.

May I make a statement please that I would like a few to consider on here, quite a few of you are asking Wenger to get his money out, spend big, dip into the market, why exactly ? to be brutally honest he is demonstrating all by himself that he has not a clue on what he is doing these days, Pardew is perfectly demonstrating that it is about coaching and not just spending, Wenger got rid of Edu, Flamini, Gilberto and replaced them with pansies, nobody else, the reason I state this is that you do actually have the back 4 in place now ththat you have wanted all season, barring a left back in Santos that is still relatively unproven, for god sake wake up and don’t give this man any money give him the sack, he has done well, but he did it ages ago and right now he is taking you into an area Arsenal Football Club cannot afford to be in this day n age, sack him before it is too late, and actually look for a coach and not a name !..you have had Russias best at a time when we all wanted him, (wenger ruined him playing him out of position) you have had Englands best young talent at the time in Walcott, (wenger has not coached him on to the next level at all) you now have another 2 in Wilshere and Oxo, you have arguably the best defender in the league, and Koscielny not far behind on recent performances, and Robin Van Persie is true class, now if wenger cannot get that lot performing is it not time for him to pack his suitcase and F*ck Off ?
Give him money ? you really are having a laugh !

Correction on flamini, he was expected to sign and did the usual thing of thinking he was bettering himself and Diarra was signed, also not sure we did get rid of Edu who I liked but he was very injury prone, Gilberto’s situation was a mistake.

On “Russia’s best” you calculatingly blame AW for his demise when you yourself admitted no Russians ever fit in well in the Premiership, you’re winding up the Wenger out brigade. If I was playing out of position firstly I’d put in the extra effort in tracking back and not spit the dummy out and if I was as brazen as he is to defy the tactics as in tracking back I’d wander in from the wing and prove the boss wrong, sorry I don’t go for that at all.

On Walcott, it’s been said by many and varied that he doesn’t have a football brain, you should know being an ex pro that if you haven’t got it to begin with it’s an uphill task trying to get it.

Both Wilshere and Oxo have football brains and it’s plain to see so if they go stale then you will be able to state AW has ruined them, time will tell on that one.

The best defender has only recently come back (out of position also) and RvP IS performing. With Sagna back and still not quite match fit the defence looked a lot better last evening and thanks to your freak player Ekotto who I read escaped a red card recently? Hacking a player’s shin?
