Arsene Wenger is on the brink of becoming the longest serving manager in Arsenal’s 125 year history not to have won a trophy, we can reveal.
History shows that assuming we do not win anything this season – which given our current form and the general malaise about the club seems unlikely (at this point I offer a disclaimer should we win both the FA Cup and the Champions League) – on Sunday July 5, 2012, we will have gone seven years and 76 days without winning a trophy. Under the stewardship of AW, unless, of course he quits or is axed before then. Unlikely.
Now we must point out is probably our greatest manager ever. But it is the decline that is crucial here. Wenger has seen his side slip to seventh in the table after taking just one point from their last four games. Not good enough by any stretch of the imagination.
So come the summer AW could hold one record he’d rather not. Prior to this landmark, the longest serving manager in the club’s history not to have won a trophy is George Morrell. Between 15 February, 1908 when he got the job and 24 April, 1915 when he was relieved of his duties, the then Woolwich Arsenal manager Morrell won nothing. The period of his tenure totals seven years 75 days.
Still, could be worse. Couldn’t it?
*These stats are published simply to bok my own argument and I’ll cheer as loudly as anyone (probably louder) when we snare silverware this season. Come on you RIP-ROARING REDS!
