Arsene Wenger says he can’t buy Players until £20 Million Profit Reached

Even though they’re one of the biggest teams in the world when it comes to money, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told a Belgian publication that he can only splash out on new players once the team has made a profit of £20 million. This apparently means he’s admitting there’s a restriction on his spending at the London club and he’s worried the team will suffer because of it.

According to Wenger, the club has to make a profit each year before he can dip into its bank account. However, he didn’t say if that was a club restriction or if it was self imposed. This does seem a little contradictory though since the club said it’s not the end of the world if they miss the Champions League because they have enough money to survive. It’s also a little odd that majority owner Stan Kroenke has bid over US $1billion for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, but won’t spend any money on new players at Arsenal.

In the past, both the club and Wenger have said there was money to spend, but now it looks like he’s changing his tune. Wenger told the Belgian paper that he likes several Belgium international players such as Marouane Fellaini, Moussa Dembele, and Lille midfielder Eden Hazard, but admits he won’t be able to bid on them unless the profit target is reached. It’s a catch 22 situation though. The profit can be made if the team reaches the Champions League again next season, but they might not achieve their goal because new players weren’t added in the transfer window.

Wenger is now hoping that Thierry Henry will be able to extend his loan period, but the New York Red Bulls have every right to expect the French star to show up when MLS training camps begin. Wenger especially seems to like Hazard, saying he’s creative, is a good passer, and has excellent vision, power, and skill. But, he said similar things about Marouane Chamakh, Chu-Young Park, and Nicklas Bendtner and where have they gotten him?

Wenger feels Hazard belongs at a high-level team such as Arsenal, but high-level teams buy players when they need them, not when a certain profit has been made. The Gunners made some cash last year, approximately £64 million by selling Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas, Emmanuel Eboue, and Gael Clichy and then doled out £48 million on several new players.

With Arsenal sitting in sixth place in the table they have just as good a chance as anybody of finishing in the top four. They’re only three points behind Chelsea and two adrift of Newcastle with plenty of time left in the season, 14 games to be exact, meaning there are 42 points still up for grabs. They didn’t strengthen the team in the transfer window since German youngster Thomas Eisfeld was the only other player brought in along with Henry even though the squad is full of holes.

According to Wenger, Arsenal more or less need to make the top four this season if they hope to bid on players such as Hazard, Lukasz Podolski, and Mario Gotze. But if they finish out of the running for a Champions League spot it’s possible that Theo Walcott and Robin Van Persie will move on to Champions League teams and higher wages. Any money received in selling Van Persie and Walcott would then guarantee Wenger reaches his profit target.

Van Persie said he’s not going to discuss the future until the season ends, but Walcott’s agents are scheduled to discuss matters with Arsenal sometime in February. It’s understood that Liverpool and Chelsea are interested in the young England winger, but it’s unlikely that Walcott will decide on anything either until the season ends.

If Wenger happens to receive a restricted budget in the summer he could still go after Dembele and/or Fellaini as they’ll be quite a bit cheaper than Gotze, Podolski, and Hazard. In the meantime, one of Wenger’s loaned players, midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, had to come limping back to the Emirates from Wolves after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, one of the worst injuries an athlete can suffer. He’s out for the season and will likely be out of action for at least six months while he recovers.

From Peterborough, just about 60 minutes from Arsenal's ground. I remember going to Highbury when growing up and after my Uncle's stepson Mark Heeley joined the Gunners from Peterborough when he was just 17 back in the 1970s. Currently cover sports (mainly football, boxing, and ice hockey) for various sites and magazines. Still see most of the games when in Canada. In fact, they get more EPL matches there than in Britain.

There you have it, our great great manager has had his hands tied and it’s not his fault we have’nt spent big in the transfer market..
Unlike Harry from up the road who would’nt care less if he run the club to the ground. So to all the minority doom and gloom posters on here and the odd spuds or two who stir up trouble… Get behind Arsene because Arsene knows best.

Precisely what Wenger wants people to think Jenny well done for falling for it, now what you say is actually correct about Wenger, now give this some thought and see if you can come up with a logical reply, Arsene Wenger is a top top manager, you do not get to the very top and become the greatest manager in the history of football club like Arsenal with all of its proud history unless you have an absolute burning desire to be the best, so you are suggesting Wenger likes his reputation and his good name going down the bog in the name of sensible financial solutions, utter nonsense !, perhaps you are suggesting Wenger now rolls over and likes his belly tickled, more nonsense, Arsene Wenger is a man filled with a will to win filled with a burning desire to be number one, and you don’t lie down and accept there are no funds when your great name is in tatters, your comparison with Harry is absolute rubbish, at our club the manager manages, so he wouldn’t be able to run the club into the ground if he wanted because Levy is in total control, Levy is the best in the business now Dein has moved over, and it would appear that the water bottles being thrown about at an alarming rate, and the constant swift exit down the tunnel leaving Pat Rice to represent Arsenal FC in a professional manner is because Arsene does not know best any longer !

Now come back with a decent educated response as to why I am wrong !

Firstly have we actually seen the OFFICIAL and original publication, secondly if this was untrue I don’t believe for one minute Gazidis or the rest of the gimps would remain quiet if AW was spinning the web of deceit.
To pour even more discredit on this blog wenger has stated TH12 will be going back to the MLS and doesn’t think it would be right to ask for an extension, but again this is all speculation.
I will agree we miss David Dein and so what that he sold his shares to make pots of money, he obviously felt his actions may have aided the club and as most fans appear to want Usmanov at the club he may have been on the right track.

Cor talk about catch 22, Arsenal as a rival fan has always been one of marble halls, class and efficiency, being bullied into this power game and handing over the crown jewels to a fat russian is a dangerous game..

It would help Wenger if Arsenal’s expectations were as low as at Tottenham. Let’s face it, you are at most, going to finish 3rd, in your best season for 50 years. That’s success?

bit harsh considering your man starts his annual we always finish 3rd or 4th about March time, don’t really know how you have the cheek to comment like that to be honest, except he won’t be saying that this year will he ha ha..wenger is happy to finish top 4 he considers that an achievement and sadly so do lots of your fans now, arsenal is about winning titles..full stop !

You are not wrong, Bigsy, you are spot on. Sums up Wenger perfectly, he is a smoke and mirrors man and it amazes me how many people fall for his spin. Wenger has been good manager in the past, but never a great one. In fact, given the players he has brought in in the past ( yes I give him full credit for Henry, Veira, Pires and the like, Jenny) I feel that Arsenal have underachieved these past 15 years.

I can’t believe some people take Wenger’s comments seriously. He has always maintained in previous transfer windows that money is there to spend. I believed him then. Just because our team is playing crap, he is worried about his job come the end of the season. He has been exposed. He is now trying to dig himself a nice trench to defend himself. He has simply not managed this current group well enough. Why are players like Almunia still on the payroll? Why doesn’t the team do basic defensive drills in training?

Does AW consider himself the coach/manager or the financial manager of the club? If he believes that both top players and supporters are going to tolerate fighting for fourth place every year, then I can assure him he is in for a rude shock sooner than he imagines!

I didn’t try to put you in your place Jenny, it was a sensible educated response and in no way anti Arsene it was very respectful, a man with his exceptional skills would not sit quietly and watch all that he has built up collapse without some serious demonstrations to the board or quitting, something somewhere is not right in all of this, Arsene is passionate about his job and is a very succesful man, you don’t get where he is without ensuring and demanding his needs are met by the board, he has earnt that right !..so what is happening then ?
