Campbell 'set for Toon medical'

E-mail Print PDF

SolCampbellSol Campbell is due to have a medical with Newcastle this afternoon with a view to signing for the newly-promoted Premier League club.

The 35-year-old defender has been out of contract since his deal with Arsenal ran out this summer and had been linked with the Magpies' north-east rivals Sunderland as well as Celtic.

But it is widely reported that Newcastle have won the race for his services as they look to strengthen their defence ahead of their return to the top flight.

Magpies boss Chris Hughton has concerns over his defence heading into the new season with the club awaiting to discover the extent of Steven Taylor's shoulder injury.

Taylor is set to at least miss the start of the campaign, which Newcastle begin away to Manchester United on August 16, but there are fears he could be sidelined for several months, prompting Hughton to make his move for Campbell.

Sunderland's interest in the former England international diminished in recent weeks after they signed former Magpies defender Titus Bramble from Wigan, while they are also expected to loan John Mensah for another season from Lyon.

I must admit I had personally wanted Sol to stay at the club for all his motivational skills, squad leadership and love of the team. Having said that, the very fact that he's looking into moving teams signifies that those aforementioned qualities aren't up to the level I'd thought/hoped they were. So I wish Sol well wherever he ends up and, on a positive note, his departure should mark a step-up in our bid for more new defensive players.

My feelings also.
A pity but on the bright side we may get a fitter replacement, he may struggle week in week out over a season.

At the moment the market is trembling with the flash the cash from Man Citeh and Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona. No sane person will go to the table with these four still playing the market and complaining of over-pricing.
I am afriad AW will be left at this point with one hour to midnight, 31st August 2010 to do his business.

It's a pity, he did a good job for us last season. Interesting that he may be needed by them to start the season. My guess is that he's not fit as he's been on honeymoon and hasn't done a pre-season. If he's not fit enough and makes some big mistakes it could effect his head (like we experienced with him against West ham a few years back).

Did any of you guys watch the match this eve on atvo? JET is really impressing me this pre-season, wilshere has been class (both these lads coming on again in second half after being subbed off- think Wenger's considering them as viable first team options?), another good display by Nasri, Velas goal was great also.

All in all quite a pleasing pre-season thus far. I like the work-rate of Chamakh whenever he's on and kos looks half-decent. Albeit against lower opposition.

Points for discussion though: Almunia starting- surely not a vote of confidence in the man?

Worryingly Djourou hobbling off early! Will we really only start the campaign with two recognised first-team CB's (fit)? Wenger MUST buy! Hoping Le Prof steps up his pursuit asap!

How does the home grown effect us? If it effect us, then I can see Wenger bringing in an english defender ( Phil Jag) and keeper who is already in the premier league? but who? Hope it ties it down fast!!!

I dont feel we should feel bad about sol joining Newcastle afterall he wasnt our player before he left. You cant lay claim on a player who has no contratual obligation to you.So joseantonio, your reaction is slightly out of order.
AW need not wait much longer to buy players. I understand alot of players are over valued, but come on, how can you allow two experience CB to live and you replace with One. Aw said he would strenghten the squard this season, i am drawing every strenght from within me to be patience with his approach. Sincerely i thought by now we would have been done with signing new players. When are these players going to blend with the team if we done get them in on time.Well, what more can i say.

Sol has gone and we should wish him well, I certainly do.

Jagielka is still on the radar, it seems, along with Per Meertesacker of Werder Bremen. I'd settle for either or preferably both.

New goalkeeper option could be Cagliari's Italy No.1 Frederico Marchetti. The 27 year old has been put up for sale by his club.

All just speculation, of course, but we can only hope!!!.
