Members Blog - 25 man squad rule is no worry to us!!
By JohnMoore1983 - 25 man rule?? We have room for 5 more at Arsenal !!After reading up on the new 25 man squad rules for this season, alot of press and public were saying we might be one of those to struggle. But after looking into it I dont think this will affect us in any way.
Our squad rolls 26 deep at the moment (source http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/new-squad-regulations-for-this-season). But I believe we will still have 5 squad places left this year. I will explain, Fabregas, Bendtner, Song, Denilson, Clichy, Djourou, and Mannone are all 'home grown' talent and OVER 21, so thats 7.
We do not have any more 'home grown' talent that is over 21 years, so add Ramsey for instance to make this up to the regulatory 8 needed. However Ramsey is under 21, so this could leave a space for an older home grown player if needed.
We have 12 players over 21 years and of foreign origin, so this is a total of 8 home grown + 12 players of foreign origin = 20 players to be named in the 25 man squad. Walcott, Gibbs, Traore, Szczesny, Vela, Wiltshire, JET and Emmanuel Frimpong (who looks the business to me) are all under 21 so can be left outside the 25 man squad but still used at anytime.
So a possibility of 5 more over 21 years of age players can be added, 1 more to that if they are 'home grown' player. Of course, you will have to look at the future and the younger players coming of age and therefore taking a full squad place, but for this season we have room.
Man City however will struggle tremendously, with a squad of soon to be 40 deep, and only a dozen or so under 21 players. They will be offloading some talent I would imagine, so is it time for the Whoopsie specialist Arsene to wonder the Man City car boot, Lescott for instance would be a great addition. Will Arsene splash the cash?

Most people did a review of this at the end of last season and found that both Arsenal and City would be fine with the new regulations. Arsenal had room for at least 4 foreign over 21s before the CB exodus.
City have a bunch of people they don't want like Jo included in the 40, so they still have a lot of space to play with.
are you f**king high?
i'd rather take kolo back and that is saying something
micah richards or de jong though would be blinding
are you f**king high?
I would rather take Pascal Cygan's mother than Micah Richards!
£69.
Hmm I'll wait til I get home.
"..irrespective of his nationality or age, [a home grown player has to have] been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Welsh Football Association for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)"
They list a squad of 27, with 7 players in the under-21 category, a further 7 in the home-grown category (although 6 can be in either)and 14 in the over-21 and not home-grown category.
Confused? me too! But I think that leaves us with 3 places for new imports.
Think he may be cleared on thebit in bold maybe?
This allows Clichy in the home grown, and will also cover the boys turning 21 before January as the rule works from the start of the season, it is not re-evaluated in the January Transfer window, you are the age you are from start of the season till the end.

Frankly of the players mentioned on your post who can't play, I don't think any will be severely missed. Its just a waste of money to keep paying them and pointless for the players to stay at the club for much longer.
And george is right - only players trained in england and wales count as home grown.
This rule is meant to stop clubs for simply buying a team of stars and encourage them to build a team of Enlgish players although in Arsenal's case it has just meant that we have imported our foriegn players earlier. We could name our squad without any English nationals who are home grown, which would be ironic...
The teams who are going to struggle with this rule are liverpool (who only have 4 recognised English first team players - Gerrard, Carragher, joe cole, johnson) and Chelsea (who have 3 - terry, lampard, acole).
This means they will have to have effectively reserve players fill out their 25 man squad taking up places which now can't be taken up by good players. Liverpools squad will have to include players like Jay Spearing, Stephen Darby, Jonjo Shelvey and Martin Kelly. And chelsea will have a similar situation.
He is (was) in the U-19s team for the semi-final against the Spanish finalists.
I do not know. Anybody?
