Time-wasting controversies FIFA’s own doing

When it comes to football there are three simple results. You either win, lose, or draw. You might go through a whole season without losing a game, as Arsenal did back in the 2003/04 season, but I’ve yet to see a team win every one of its games in top level sports. Nobody likes losing and most people don’t like drawing either, but it’s how you handle the disappointments that define you as a player and a person.

Wigan captain Gary Caldwell wasn’t happy with the conduct of Robin van Persie after his team’s 2-1 win over the Gunners on Monday night at Emirates Stadium, and rightfully so. Van Persie refused to shake Caldwell’s hand after the game and was clearly seen pushing him way as the Wigan player attempted to approach the Dutch striker.

Football is already full of team loads of prima donnas and it’s a shame that such an excellent player as Van Persie acted so childish after the game. Whatever Van Persie’s reasons were, there’s not really any excuse to lower yourself to that level in public. Perhaps he’s been paying too much attention to his manager Arsene Wenger, who also embarrassed himself and the club by berating the fourth official throughout the game. What’s the point? He’s not the one refereeing the game.

There are those who’ll stick up for Wenger and Van Persie no matter what they do and will come up with endless excuses for their behavior, but there aren’t any that make sense. Caldwell said Van Persie has to show some dignity when losing even if he was disappointed at the result. He’s on the pitch representing the football club not just himself.

Wenger also refused to shake Wigan manager Roberto Martinez’s hand after the game as he said Martinez was busy shaking the hands of his assistants. But while Wenger and Van Persie should be held accountable for their reactions, this problem, as with most problems in football can be traced back to FIFA. Wenger was clearly upset because he felt Wigan was wasting time and spent about 89 out of the 90 minutes ranting and raving at the fourth official.

But FIFA invites this type of endless controversy with just about every rule they make. There’s supposedly a simple solution already in place concerning time wasting, which is for the referee to add it on at the end of the game. However, this rarely happens and football teams and fans are cheated week after week. If the wasted time was added onto the end of the matches the way it’s supposed to be, we’d be looking at 120-minute games each week.

As far as I know, football is the only “timed” sport on the planet that doesn’t have the sense to use an official clock. If they want to get rid of time-wasting tactics the answer’s right in front of their eyes. This would be to use an official clock which is stopped whenever the ball is out of play or a player’s rolling around with a feigned injury and then start it up when the game resumes, like all other sports do. There’s no need for crying and whining to fourth officials and the controversies will stop instantly.

The way it is now, and always has been, there’s no accountability and the referee has the power to blow full time whenever he feels like it. Anyway, if we get on the topic of FIFA ruining football we’d be here all day. Either way, Caldwell said Van Persie’s a great player and he voted for him to win the PFA player of the year award and is certain he’ll walk away with it on the weekend. He just said he understood Van Persie’s feelings at the time, but was disappointed in the way the great player reacted and I can see his point, Arsenal supporter or not.

good article.  Its dissapointing to see this continual complaining from the players and the manager and is embarrasing

    • Berg10

      or passion?

  • Morrissey’s Love Child

What a hideous article. Are you a Talksport presenter? So you know what Caldwell did to make RVP not want shake hands? If you don’t know, don’t criticise him.

Spot on, the current situation is a shambles (sadly typical of most of the archaic rules/laws). There is no such thing as “the full 90 minutes” and it’s time to join the modern world. Research has shown that most games have 55-60 minutes of “ball in play” so let’s have 30 mins each way of actual play & every time the game stops the clock stops. Simple, no time wasted & no “Fergie time”…

  • Joke of a site.

When a player kicks you for 90 mins and wastes time,  then want to shake your hand – I find it all a little hypocritical.

Same as John Terry and Bridge,  Galalas and Na$ri,   shaking hands is optioal ,if you have no respect,  stick with your guns.

the whole hand shake bullshit is just that bullshit.

I say good on Van Persie for standing up for what he believes.  It is a choice,  just because some mug with a website that never goes to games has an opinion and Caldwell has an opinion doesn’t mean either are worth shit.

  • Fernandes_aaron

The real problem was the players were sleeping the first 10 minutes.. Something they always do against the bottom 5 teams!! Check out how they start a match against a Man C or Chelsea, their always full of pep!!

  • The BearMan

The players shook hands at the start of the game is that not enough? Something happened during the game which displeased RvP. Cladwell who also likes a kiss n shake hands at the end of a game was disappointed. His payment for voting for RvP I guess.

Well to report this to the media shows that he got his reward!

This is not the first or last time a footballer would refuse to shake n opponents hand before or after a game. Do we need another FiFa’s ruling? Or a blogger making a mountain out of a mole hill. On occasions disappointment n frustrations causes the best of us to forget the common curtesies the English have long abondoned!

Cladwell if he was the biggerman would have waited a few days, then invited RvP for a cup of tea n cake. Perhaps Ian Palmer could have arranged it an got us an exclusive.

    What a moronic article.

shaking hands is bollocks, noone moans when wenger storms off sulking and leaves Pat Rice to represent Arsenal in a professional manner so what ? I wouldn’t shake hands either ..especially not with a rapist !

If you know you lot are shit, and you fucking are, why not leave it at that? Chelsea completely mullered you lot. The second goal wasn’t exactly out of the blue, stop moaning. I see Bale one-trick pony was shit again, so was one-footed Modric. So overrated. You’ll soon be bragging to West Ham fans about your FA cup wins when they come up.

After sundays FA Cup semi-final defeat there was only one question on everyone’s mind – how much did the second ‘goal’ influence the result?Harry Redknapp was clearly furious after the match. The second goal was a disaster,” Harry said. “It was nowhere near a goal. It was a huge mistake.“We looked too open after that and they picked us off. It was key. He’s made a big mistake. I don’t see how he can give the goal. It’s nowhere near over the line. There were bodies on the line and the ball couldn’t possibly get over the line.“He must have guessed. He can’t have been sure.”Harry also added that the referee Martin Atkinson apologised after the game.“I spoke to him. He says he feels worse than I do. I said: ‘I don’t think so’.“He knows he’s made a mistake and he says he’ll have a bad week as well.”It’s the second season in a row that Chelsea have benefitted against us in this way but how much bearing did the decision have on the overall result?

    • arsenalbob

Harry is a clown my mate Dan, he does not rotate a squad, he uses the same 13 players and has run them into the ground, same as last season when we bottomed out in Feb too, It is totally Harry to blame, no secret in the fact Fergie would sign Modric, Bale and walker tomorrow mate, so clearly Harry has got it wrong, I hate Redknapp and quietly I am saying’told you so’ to a few pals who love him, we should have tied up 3rd yonks ago, credit wenger for getting the scums season back on track but as we saw with Wigan they are far from bomb proof and have ridden their luck against Everton (onside), Newcastle (fluked last minute winner) Liverpool (great strike but hammered all the game) and Mancini who turned up for some strange reason looking for a draw with no attacking desire at all, Chelsea and Stoke will really test this soft belly at the back and it aint over yet..Monday will tell us where it is heading ! BIGSY under one of my many names !

        • DANTHEHOTSPURMAN

  • ben

you cannot use a normal clock and stop it whenever it goes out of play..
that would change football completely… as currently most games the ball is only in play for 60-70 minutes per game..
therefore adding 20 mins to each game and to the stamina needed by the players..
the more enduracne needed by the players the more the game will change..
as we see in all games with extra time.. the players have no legs towards the end and the standard of football decreases..

and from the clubs POV.. will they want their players playing 20 mins longer and increasing their risk of injury through fatigue?

  • MikeSA

RvP DID offer to shake a hand, he was trying to shake two opposition players at the same time, so offered caldwell the “wrong” hand, which he batted away and then tried to force RvP to shake with the “right” one, at which point RvP told him to go and do one.

Likewise, exactly how long would you like Wenger to wait?

    Quite frankly, you’re an @rsehole.

  • Four times of which I know of have RVP refused to shake the oppositions hand. 1st was Morgan of Sheff Utd, Morgan breaks two ribs of RVP on a set pice by punshing him, it was taken by camera after the game. Stil idiots in England thought that RVP was the unsporting one. 2nd was against Blackburn in the fa cup semi. RVP scores the third goal before some B`brun player punshes him in the face while RVP runs to celebrate. See the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzQABHw22g4. 3rd time against N`castle 4th against Wigan(although RVP acctually does shake his hand). This suggest to me that RVP dosen`t shake hands due to a reason and rightly so. I don`t know his reasons all the time I can just imagine what has been said between RVP and Caldwell and Krul, but based on earlier incidents there might be a very good reason.
