EXCLUSIVE: NEW ARSENAL SHIRT - THE VERDICT

arsenalshirt1
by CARL ELDRIDGE AS we exclusively revealed on Friday, Arsenal will revert to a design based on our 1971 Double-winning kit for next season to celebrate the Gunners' 125th anniversary. And supporters would appear to be backing the club with the design considering the responses I got from fans at the Emirates on Saturday for the 2-0 win over Sunderland.

AS FTK revealed last week, Nike and the club are said to have agreed on a design based on the traditional red shirts with white sleeves much to the relief of some of our fans who had feared the club were set to abandon the white sleeves altogether.

It was thought in some quarters that they were set to produce an all-red shirt similar to those donated to the Gunners by Nottingham Forest after we were founded in 1886. And a hoax image of a shirt similar to this style did the rounds on the net last week which didn't help.

But we have gone with the shirt worn by players such as Charlie George, John Radford and George Armstrong when Bertie Mee's side won the Division One title and the FA Cup.

And fans are delighted that the club have produced a kit with such historical importance. 'That simple red and white kit is iconic with the Arsenal and will sell like hot cakes,' said season-ticket holder Chris Adsett, 36.

'We've had many variations on the home shirt but the essence of all things Arsenal can be found in the '71 home top and we can only hope some of the success of that era returns to us next season.'

Harvey Burchill, 11, and a season ticket holder in Block 109 is keen to buy the kit as soon as hits the shops in the summer. "I think it's well nice. I've seen pictures and matches from 1971 and can see that it's a great shirt to have again and I am really excited."

Sue Greenhow, 45, said she was a fan of the kit but wouldn't be buying it. "I'm not into wearing colours actually but I do like the shirt and it'll be good to see the boys run out in it next season. I just hope the away shirt is the classic yellow and blue from the final against Liverpool."

There was one dissenting voice from Silver Member Brian Fellows, 44, who said: "For something as important as 125th anniversary we should be ditching the 'Fly Emirates' logo and have a pure kit. I know there is a commercial deal in place for the sponsorship but conversely Emirates would get publicity from it and get some respect from true Arsenal fans as well. That said I still like the idea of harking back to 71 which was a great era in our history."

Remember we set aside our traditional red shirts with white sleeves in 2005 when we quit Highbury for the Emirates Stadium and adopted a redcurrant shirt, the colour we wore during their first season at the old ground in 1913.

At last, a really decent, proper ARSENAL shirt for Arsenal players. Red shirts. White sleeves. Yellow away shirts. Blue away shorts. It isn't rocket science, Nike...

The idea of Brian Fellows is great. I really hope Fly Emirates could take off his big letters for this shirt or at least only put thier logo instead of the letters.

Its a great shirt but I agree with Brian Fellows. For our 125th year it would've been much better to keep the shirt pure, without any of that nasty Chelsea castoff Emirates shite plastered over it. So until the sponsorship changes, I will continue not to buy anything with it written on.
All the same, I'm sure Arsenal will shift
a lot of them

wow I feel like someone heard me!!! been harping on this since.... well before the 2006-2008 shirt which I thought was the closest they would get to the design.

Now all they need is to make it out of a material that in long sleeve when wet grows by about 15% and hangs loosely over your hands, like the way george armstrong used to wear it... when he wasn't pulling the sleeves up his forearms every 5 minutes!!!

I am pleasantly surprised by that! let's hope it is as close to the mock up as you were with the white kit last year.

The photoshop of the arsenal logo could not be any worse than that, even to someone that doesn't use photoshop I would of thought you could tell that image had just been pasted onto that shirt, oh well if its just an attempt to get people to read this blog then you've succeeded, if you had a brain you'd see it was a fake..

Yes it is a photoshop!!! It's a mock up not the real thing.... This is from the information we have received from our sources.

why would there be a new away shirt? didn't ivan just take the micky outa manu for releasing a new kit every year?

The problem is, the 2006-08 shirts was already based upon the 70-71 Double winning home shirt - http://soccerlens.com/shirts/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/arsenal-home-06-08.jpg

Nike are more likely to go with another 'redcurrant' number.

an, there will be, it's already confirmed if you look at the Arsenal Online store. The current Navy Blue away will become the third kit for next year and there will be a new away kit (perhaps the mooted green number of recent years), I wouldn't bank on it being yellow mind with the poor sales of last seasons away.

no problem with shirt, but would be good to have the 'fly emirates' in much smaller font and more subtle to look more classy and up market. you don't buy a pierre cardin shirt with the name emblazoned across it.....

doubt if emirates would allow it but i think it would look better if the fly emirates logo would be much smaller and under the arsenal crest like man city's away strip this season.

Maybe it would look a bit more nice with only the emirates logo instead of the text over the whole shirt. Check this out if you dont know what the logo looks like. It's the same logo as taped on the stadium. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2143/2248931662_123ef33ef9_m.jpg

Well, it's a nice shirt but the other one that's circulating around I prefer. After seeing that one you realise how much a large sponser logo ruins a good shirt. That one was also going retro had a White cannon (right way round) in place of the crest.

Anyway, I like this one and may very well be buying it
