Kudos Emmanuel, But Here’s To Bacary Sagna: Footballer And Dance-Master

sagnaandjimc1

By JAMES CURTIS For those of you who thought Bacary Sagna had been dropped on Saturday, or rested, the truth is he was carving up some shapes late into the night on the dance floor of El Divino in Mallorca, as my photographic evidence shows. As I sobered up around 6am, the poor local man who I had almost convinced into believing was actually Sagna, became no more than a great look-a-like, or at best a long lost cousin.

Whether Sagna was rested, dropped or indeed clubbing in the Mediterranean, doesn’t hide the fact he is a key asset to Arsenal. Emmanuel Eboue had a fine game against Sunderland, and some comments on Insider suggested the Ivorian should keep his place ahead of Bacary, but I just can’t agree.

When Sagna first came on the scene in north London, I joked with friends about when the Bacary Sagna Stand would be built; such was my interest and adoration for our latest French acquisition from Auxerre. The personal belief still, is that there are not many defenders in the Premiership better than him.

Perhaps Sagna is not at his best right now. Everybody is due a slight dip in form and can’t be expected to play to the highest level throughout a whole season. For Bacary, there are some exceptions anyway; given the fact that he has missed only three Premiership games all season.

What makes Bacary one of the top right backs in the Premiership? First it’s the Frenchman’s textbook style. Usually his first touch is good and if there is a clearance to be made, the ball ends up down the field in corners, rather than sliced into the stands, separating him from the technical underclass of the Prem. He defends first and chooses his moments to attack with care, which can’t be said for others at times – rule one: defend first!

The left-hand side has been the weak link this season, where injuries and inconsistent runs havn’t helped. With Sagna, the right flank comes under less pressure because the spider-haired Senegalese descendant knows how to stand on his feet and get tight to his opponent. Crosses are allowed to arrive into the Arsenal box much less frequently from the right, compared to the left.

In his three seasons (including the current campaign) as a Gunner, Sagna has made 89 appearances, and 16 for the France national team. At the end of the 2007/08 season he was named by his piers in the PFA Team of the Year alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard, Cristiano Ronaldo and Fernando Torres.

The consistency of the 27-year old is one of his strongest characteristics as a footballer, partly down to his professionalism and serious attitude, to perform to the same standard regardless of who he plays against. This was magnified greatly during the 2007/08 season when Bacary’s older brother was found dead in a bathtub just one week before a Champions League tie with AC Milan. Under advice from his father, Sagna played on helping the team to victory.

Kudos to Emmanuel Eboue for showing a similar professional attitude against Sunderland considering it was one of few starts this season. He also won the man of the match award in the opinion of many Insiders this week. Still, I hope to see Bacary back in action soon, who at an investment of around £8 million is by far one of Wenger’s shrewdest buys.

No doubting the fact that Sagna is a quality defender.

However he is not he best going forward, and that is a must for a full back with our current 4-3-3 system.

Personally I think Sagna could solve our upcoming CB exodus (Gallas,Silvest re, Campbell). He has played there before and it would suit his style.

Eboue offers far more going forward, more so than even Clichy and that can be the difference in unlocking a stubborn defence.

i cant see sagna as a centre back myself. as a defender he is top class but maybe he isnt as natural as eboue going forward.

but still its the weaknesses up front that are to question before sagna is criticised (although im not saying he has been attacked that much). i think if we had natural wingers and some recognised forward for the 4-3-3 we wouldnt need to rely on sagna so much.

again, i dont think sagna is a massive conundrum at the moment, but now it seems eboue has people talking !! it's all healthy

I agree with Arse&Nose above :)
On the other hand, i must say that the picture above looks nothing like Bacary Sagna apart from the hairstyle and skin colour. I will never understand 'Europeans' who see to think that all black people look alike!

chill out mide, it was just a bit of fun, and OBVIOUSLY the hair is the nearest thing to being sagna-like. if it was a poor white look-a-like you wouldnt have said anything about race !!

I knew that would come up. Yes I have. :-*

Cannavaro was a 1 off freak with an amazing jump. Sanga is too heavy to jump like that.

So let me rephrase. SANGA cant play centre back when he is only 5'9'' you plums

im pretty sure somebody at 5'9" could still play centre-back. verms is just 6 but with a good leap he makes heading looks a doddle. anyway there are loads of things to consider like partnerships. but sagna will be in the right back spot come the weekend !!

The biggest question is: Would you refuse a £60 million+ offer for Fabregas?

2 inch, i love how clichy and eduardo must be sold, but traore keeps his place. djourou looked class in pre season and its a shame he is injured. nordveit looked like an interesting player at barnet !!

lots of potential in your squad above and i apprecuate that must have taken a while to draw up. my answer to your question is much shorter: i would refuse £60+ offer, but my question: would wenger?

i believe 60m would be good enough to sell fabregas. But with that money wenger should buy Dzeko/Gignac/Agbonlahor/Balotelli/Lukaku (any 1 of them) and Hamsik/Banega/Turan/Assiati/Ozil/Krasik/Gourcuff (any 1 of them)

apart from these... i think he is already getting chamakh and sakho so if he decides to let go off fab he should get a quality striker and playmaker.

I've been watching Olympiakos v Bordeaux and Chamakh looked ordinary but maybe Wenger will transform him should he arrive at the Emirates.

not agbonlahor please. a striker who likes to drift out to the left isnt what we need. we need a centre forward plus specified wingers. anyhow i cant say gabby is that great. gourcuff is clearly a talent as is dzeko ...

YES - he improves year on year so his value will increase for the next few years at least then the option to sell is more lucrative.

point well made berg. to think that slick haired whiney muppet at madrid was £80m. he will burn out soon, or the many tears he cries will have eroded away his silly face

my question to you: silvestre for messi, straight swap?

agree chamakh looked average. switched at half time to barca stuttgart and pavel Pogrebnyak looked a much better and more effective player. But i suppose its impossible to judge on a half of football each.

I wouldn't sell cesc for any amount this summer unless we have become a selling club and are not serious about winning anything for another four years. if we sell our captain and best player (and we won't be able to replace him unless we buy iniesta or xavi or gerrard :-x ) then it wil say to the rest of the squad that the club i'm at isn't interested in winning its only interested in making a profit. It will send the same message to the fans and considering we have repeatedly been told that we are in a wonderful financial position, if we were to sell him this summer then the board should look for a new manager because it is a sign of a lack of ambition.

The only reason i would accept it if cesc left would be if he personally said that he wasn't happy and that he wanted to return home or if the board told us that they have been lying about the financial position and that we actually really need the money.

yes db10, selling another captain would be real damaging and quite pathetic. chelsea have managed to keep hold of gerrard and chelsea, terry (although i never saw jt leaving the bridge). we need our skipper to stay and build a future, and show some resolve. you know liverpool and chelsea would implode without their main men and i suspect we would too.

i couldnt watch either champions league games this evening as i was watching dagenham and redbridge away at aldershot. the daggers were 2-0 down and came back to win dramatically 3-2. have your £60 million for cesc if you will, but this was priceless

difference with Terry and Gerrard is they are english and play for the teams they have been at since they were 9-10.

Plus I can't see either of those learning the lingo abroad. JT would take his mum and she would get caught stealing in the Supermercado.

And Gerrards missus would no longer need to go on sunbeds to get her nice 'Phil Bran Tan', so that rules her out going as well.

If Cesc decides to leave, so be it. We have to make sure we replace him with someone as good. Maybe Sean Derry from Crystal Palace? He wouldn't cost much as they are in administration.

tj, yea i see your point. with cesc it feels like arsenal has been his boyhood club. he is a different case to most players and at 22, to be captain must enhance that.

gerrard and jt are so thick, nowhere near capable of learning a new language. cesc speaks better english as it is.

sean derry would be the ideal replacement but i heard he is in talks with ac milan. unlike john 'father of the year' terry and stevie 'i'll smash your face in mr dj' gerrard, derry's gal is a italian super model and apparently wants the switch away from south east london. how about neil danns?

Yeah db10, I was switching between the two games and caught glimpses of Pogrenbyak and he penetrated more than Chamakh, could have been the differing formation and style of play I suppose but Chamakh's overall performance was very subdued for me, let's hope if he is coming AW has seen something more in him.

Jimmy, just one point on Sagna. He was ripped apart against Chelsea at home by Cashley. You say our left side is weak, but our right side hasn't been much better of late.

As for Chamakh, he is not playing for a new contract and he has signed for us now. Maybe he doesnt want to go through in case he faces us and knocks us out. Not the best way to endear yourself to your new fans.

yes sagna didnt have his best game up against cashley. but at least cashly no wife is a half-decent player. seeing the left get carved open by the likes of landon donovan and nani was a sight for sore eyes.

but i dont think clichy or sagna (our first choices) need replacing. they will find form again, unlike all those wasters in the full-back positions at liverpool and chelsea - josemi, del horno, how much was zhirkov? feel free to name some other, those who come nowhere near our lads.

looking forward to the smile of mourinho's face tonight !!

TJ
Sagna has had a bit of an up and down season but he's quality and I like having Manu as his back up but he should get sufficient starts such as less prominent games to keep his interest at AFC.

On Chamakh, that's a cute reason for a mediore performance lol, or maybe he's simply lost interest, I can't see him being a poor player given Wenger's continued interest, we just didn't see one of his better performances I'd like to think.

ok, how about this to spice up the transfer market. We could have a High-Low auction, where the lowest unique bid wins.

i know chamakh is not that effective, but i have a feeling wenger has already bought him. We really need some one at CD and DM because if song gets injured then seriously we lack in that zone. Diaby is a much better player when he plays up front. But i dont see any harm if we sell fab. But as i said before if he is sold we should buy a world class player like edin dzeko. I mean Dzeko and RVP can rip and team off in the league. Also we should get a playmaker. I really like Hamsik, he is a talented lad and also young. But yes once again we should only sell fab if we get a world class player... just dont go and sell him and then say we were in the market like how he said this winter, stupid wenger
