Nasri: We can't compete...

E-mail Print PDF
samir_nasri_791530c
by CARL ELDRIDGE Is it me, or is Samir Nasri getting his excuses in early? I only ask as the Frenchman, yet to fulfill his potential at the Arsenal I believe, has been telling the Press that we can't compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United. Nothing like talking up your chances and breeding a bit of confidence ahead of a vital Champions League game, eh, monsieur?

Nasri told the Sun: "This season we've had bad results in big games. We lack experience at the highest level. Teams like United and Chelsea have more experience and can deal with these games." So pull your bleeding finger out then Samir my old China and, er,Ā compete!

The tabloids are full of our in injury woes this morning and we go into the match tonight with key personnel missing and with Sol Campbell set to start the game alongside TV5 at the heart of our defence. Also missing is Manuel Almunia with Lucasz Fabianksi taking his place. The Daily Mail's Matt Barlow, not one to overstate the problems (ahem)Ā writes: Porto is no place for the spineless but Arsene Wenger rocked up on Portugal’s wind-battered Atlantic coast without four players who have come to represent the backbone of his Arsenal team this season.

Almunia, William Gallas, Alex Song and Andrey Arshavin are all absent and what seemed an agreeable last-16 draw against the troubled Portuguese champions has suddenly acquired a very different complexion. Even Wenger, among football’s purest purists, felt obliged to namecheck ā€˜defensive solidity’ on his way to a land where the Gunners have never won.

"We need to revive that spirit,"Ā  AW tells the Telegraph. "We need to be special. We need to dig deep. You cannot go to Porto, who have played 10 consecutive years in the Champions League, and turn up with an average game. The difference will be mental. We also need to be defensively solid but not cautious; that means when you have the ball you have to play. We want a good result that keeps us in the tie."

He adds that Campbell's experience should help him tonight as heĀ replaces Bill Gallas: "That was one of the key reasons that we re-signed him. A lot has happened since the Champions League final in 2006 – when he signed for Notts County six months ago, he certainly didn't think he would be involved in a Champions League game now. When you have quality you can always come back. As long as you are hungry to work hard, a central defender can play three or four years longer than a striker."

Fabianski's inclusion prompted the Times to point out that the 24-year-old Poland goalkeeper has started only five matches this season, three of which have ended in defeat, and was at fault for both goals in last year’s FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea.

ā€œI have complete faith in Fabianski,ā€ AW said. ā€œHe has shown both that he has exceptional talent, but that he also lacks a little bit of experience, for example against Chelsea. Sometimes maybe he comes too much for some deep balls, but he’s very talented.

ā€œDon’t forget that one of the greatest goalkeepers ever in England, David Seaman, made mistakes at 22 or 23 if you watched him. That’s part of the learning process. I believe he’s a very intelligent goalkeeper and he will have learned from his mistakes.ā€

The Guardian tells us that we have Āprospered against the odds before, reaching the 2006 final despite losing key players enĀ route. "We need to revive that spirit from 2006," AW told the paper. "We need to dig deep. We need to be defensively solid, but not cautious.

"That means when you have the ball you have to play. But you do not go to Porto, who have played 10 consecutive seasons in the Champions League, and get away with an easy game. They are a dangerous side, and we know that. We need to be special. We cannot turn up in the last 16 with an average game [and expect to succeed]."

In Arsene we trust...

All I know if you want to win trophies and titles you have a strong defence.Arsenal are in a way like Brazil. Throw cautin to the wind and to hell eith defnce.
AW has been beaten so many times by Mu since 2005 that it's a wonder he doesn't get a defensive/tactical coach.
I blame him for Arsenal's problems and don't think the cl is easy to win.

Is this the same Brazil that has Gilberto Silva and Felipe Melo as the midfield pair? How is that throwing caution to the wind? If we were anywhere near as solid defensively as Brazil, we'd be streets ahead of chelski and manure in the league. Your comparison is nonsensical.

Defeatist talk like this has no place at Arsenal.

Dock Nasri a months pay and stick him in the reserves untill he end of the season. He will hardly be missed as he's been pretty well rubbish every time he's played.

yes because we'd rather have walcott on the pitch??? the kind of disproportionat e action that you suggest would only destroy morale.

Walcott could be no worse than Nasri, and a bit of discipline could do wonders for team morale, much more than the denigration of team-mates by a serial underachiever.

almost every arsenal player has been talking like that you idiots

i can't stand seeing players singled out

especially the players of samirs calibre. he wasn't voted number four last year for no reason. and also for fucks sake, this is what his second or third month back?

now i love arsenal, but i almost want him to go to another team and kick our asses sideways then you fuckers will appreciate and miss what he gives us on the pitch.

the fact you can even mention walcott replacing nasri makes me realize how little you could ever know about the game, and really, it makes me want to puke.

did you watch any of the recent games walcott's featured in?

i'm sure the boss wants to put him on loan, but the thing is i bet no one good enough wants him, fuck me you lot are idiots

have a good day morons

have you watched any of the games nasri has played in recently u f*ckin twat... he's awful, he does nothing but pass sideways and back, and every time he's involved in an attacking move, he resorts to the usual tippy tappy bullshit... agreed walcott is nowhere near the finished article and is unbelievably disappointing and frustrating at times... but whats the use in having nasri start every game when he produces and adds nothing, we already have fabregas and rosicky, and nasri is just a carbon copy but not as good, its hleb all over again, the only difference being hleb was a better player for us... oh and it sounds to me like you're more a fan of nasri's than of arsenal, if youd like to see him play for another club against us and play well... wheres the fucking sense in that u moronic [censored]

he never re-signs players... oh wait... thats not right...

we musn't forget that nasri is still young. he isn't even close to being in the peak of his career yet. remembering those two goals against man u i think he deserves more time and support. its a sign of the talent and potential.

ok fair enough. but his form is so woeful that right now nasri is still better. at least he doesn't lose the ball every single time he gets it. oh and i'm not calling for walcotts wages to be docked and for him to be put in the reserves.

His form is no worse than Nasri's and he hasn't been able to play the games he needs.

Oh! and he doesn't slag his team-mates off in the press so doesn't deserve to be penalised.

You serious Eldo?! Bring Hleb back?....I doubt it...he chose to leave and go the glamor of Barcelona...now? he's way back where he started...let him rot where he belong..he wasn't a true Arsenal player from the day he got here. Let's not forget the badge kissing scene where he constantly kissed the Barcelona badge...the hell with him.

live by the sword die by the sword. all footballers are mercenaries but some, like anelka and hleb think they are flavor of the month and jump at the first big opportunity not realizing that they are not going to an arsenal where we show loyalty to players and allow them time to settle but to a real or barca or other club which if you don't produce the goods from moment one you are surplus and shipped out. one chance and that's it. so it was his and their gamble. maybe some short term profit for em but long term... look how long it took anelka to make it back to the top level and he was very lucky.

It was good to see that player, who so many fans want Wenger to re-sign, warming the bench at Milan last night. What's his name? Oh that's it Flamini! what a success he's been since leaving Arsenal just like his old mucker Hleb.

eldo! i normally don't mind your posts but i found this one to be unfair and harsh on nasri.

he's only said what every player has said. not only that but you didn't publish the whole interview.

please, be fair, at least don't treat nasri like a denilson or almunia.

i'll be real disappointed if he's forced onto the bench

Hleb should stick to Ice creams

We have Hleb's replacement in Jack Wilshere...

Bench Nasri, and give Walcott his run of games he deserves.

But what is it with the Injuries at THOF?

Do we push the little darlings too hard, or bring them back too soon.

I think that we should be told!

My thoughts exactly.

The brittleness and injury quotient of this current squad beggars belief!

And if i see Denilson signaling to the bench he wants subbing again after a cruncher, only to receive a 'get up' wave from Pat Rice i will not be responsoble for my action.

Anyone have any inside on training methods at London Colney? Seems the only two hard nuts who are prepared to get stitches and get on with it are TV5 and AA23, who, after what I've seen of the Russian League must relish not getting a pasting every week.

Also heard a rumour that RVP is responding well and might be back for the run-in early April. TBC

I think Nasri is completely wrong. I bet he didnt even mean to say it like that and the SUN have turned his words into that.

Its just a few players who are inexperienced, ie: Denilson.

If Diaby played against united, then he would have added a little steel going forward and defensivly.

If we had Van Persie for the two big games in January, we would all be thinking very differently.

Actually if rooney was injured for Man U, then they would be in a way worse position than we are.

We have an overall better team than they do.

I believe Nasri is correct. We can't compete coz of our defensive frailiites. The fellow is telling the truth and if anyone is has a contrary opinion just see the unbelievable unforgivable errors by Fabianski and the back four. Tho the guy is better than Alumnium, he needs to play more games for him to be the best in our team. We will not an anything again this term but I am not too worried about that. But the question is when will we turn into a team that wins? The time is not known at the moment and fans will b frustrated. However, the Arsenal has a history of going 18 yearsband not winning anything so we fans have to dig in mentally, not emotionally and not by giving AW a time frame to produce a trophy. All I know is like on one of the plays of Shakespeare, it will come when it will come.

Players like Cesc and TV5 deserve to play in front of a world class keeper. DESERVE.

Plus that was a stonewall penalty on TR7.

And how on his current form Denilson gets the nod in front of Eboue i have no idea....

Still. An away goal and hopefully, finally AW will have to address the keeper situation.

What a crock that match was, a 2-1 defeat and all because we have crappy goalies. I'm not one to blast Arsenal players, but sometimes the blasting is well deserved and tonight Fabinski (sp) deserves all the blasting he gets.....What in the H$#* was he doing, it's called a "Back Pass" you DO NOT pick it up, you kick it back out to an outfield player, basic goalie 101 Fab... Anyhoo at least ol' Sol salvage a goal fer'us and it's not all bad, but we had better not concede one goal on home soil, if so I'm afraid another trophy will be done and dusted for this season, come on Arsenal!!!!

In defence of Nasri I think he“s playing out of positions for the injury of RVP and the poor form of Walcott.

I think that in the summer when we heard that we will be switching to the 4-3-3 we imagine Nasri playing in the middle next to Cesc like Iniesta plays next to Xavi.

Im still wanting to see Nasri playing in the middle next to Cesc where I think he will be far better that in the wing.
