Lucas Torreira looks set to leave Arsenal this summer after an incredible loan spell at ACF Fiorentina this season, however, a permanent move to La Viola now looks unlikely.
According to reports, the Tuscan club have pulled out of negotiations with Arsenal over the signing of Torreira, with the Gunners now needing to find a new buyer for the 26-year-old Uruguay international ahead of the summer transfer window.
With a spot in the Arsenal squad unlikely given that Mikel Arteta has sent the South American out on two different loan spells in the past 24 months, Torreira looks more likely than ever to leave north London, though where the midfielder ends up is now up to speculation.
And speculate we shall as list five clubs who should be looking at signing Torreira this summer, with the midfielder primed to leave Arsenal in the coming months with his position in the squad unlikely to involve playing football in north London.
Torreira has flourished in Serie A this season with Fiorentina, and whilst the Italian side have failed to meet Arsenal’s financial demands for the 26-year-old, one club that could meet what the Gunners are looking for is AC Milan.
The newly-crowned Scudetto champions are set to lose Franck Kessie to FC Barcelona this summer, meaning a new central midfielder is welcome at the San Siro, and Torreira is a perfect candidate to replace the Ivory Coast international.
Before moving to Fiorentina, the one club with the strongest links to Torreira was nonother than Argentina giants Boca Juniors, the team the midfielder supports and who the South American publicly admitted last summer he wanted to join.
Whilst a transfer never materialised, this summer could see Torreira join his boyhood club, with Boca Juniors expected to sell some of their highest-rated talents, such as Exequiel Zeballos and Valentin Barco, who are reportedly wanted by Manchester City.
Probably the most left-field suggestion on this list, Leeds United could be a surprise contender to sign Torreira this summer if the Yorkshire club sell Kalvin Phillips, something that according to reports is very likely to happen in the coming months.
With a passionate fanbase and an electric style of football under Jesse Marsch, Torreira could be well-suited for life at Elland Road, with the midfielder’s mentality and never-say-die attitude something that will resonate with Leeds fans.
With the news that Boubacar Kamara has joined Aston Villa this week, Olympique Marseille need a new defensive midfielder, and following the success of both Matteo Guendouzi and William Saliba this season, Torreira seems to be a logical option for the French giants to target.
Ligue 1 is a division that requires athleticism and stamina, two factors of Torreira’s game that could help the midfielder flourish at Marseille. And just like with Leeds, the supporters of the French side will quickly warm to the Uruguayan given his style of play.
Torreira has had a crack at life in La Liga with Atletico to mixed results, yet Sevilla could be the ideal club for the midfielder given their incredible track record of South Americans in the Arsenal star’s position thriving at the club.
Moreover, with Sevilla’s defensive midfield options all in their thirties and the Andalusian club set to compete in the UEFA Champions League, Torreira could be a perfect summer transfer to help bulk up the squad ahead of their next venture in Europe’s elite club competition.
