Arsenal fans have reacted with fury after former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson hit out at Arsene Wenger’s move for Luis Suarez.
Thompson angered Arsenal supporters with a rant on Sky Sports News about Suarez and his potential move to the Emirates.
Gunners target Suarez wants to quit the Reds and says senior Kop figures promised they would allow him to depart if they didn’t qualify for Champions League football.
Wenger’s bid – £40million plus a pound in order to try to trigger a release clause – was rejected with Liverpool demanding £50million.
And Uruguay attacker Suarez could hand in a transfer request by the end of the week.
Thompson, now a pundit, questioned why former Ajax goal-getter Suarez, 26, would consider a move from Merseyside to north London.
He said: “If you want to go play Champion’s League football then fair enough. But don’t say that then go and join Arsenal.”
A clearly riled and upset Thompson, who made 477 appearances for the club, added that Suarez would have been thrown in the reserves and left to rot until his current contract expired if he took his current stance while playing under legendary Anfield managers Bill Shankly or Bob Paisley.
Supporters were quick to deliver a barrage of withering tweets about Thompson’s outburst – the majority of which are too offensive to publish – but were along the lines of him being “delusional”, “disrespectful” and “insulting”.
Thompson, 59, also served as assistant manager to Gerard Houllier.
