It’s another win
Well, it’s another win, this time against Southampton, 2-0 away with goals coming from Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud.
It was not the best of performances but it’s three points and a much needed win. The victory now moves us into fifth, three points behind Manchester City, in fourth and four behind Liverpool in third who have played one extra game. However, we still need a slip from one of them to have a chance of a top four finish.
Sanchez was not involved much during the game, but his goal was excellent, as he left two Southampton defenders on the floor after selling them a dummy before firing in.
Granit Xhaka had another good game in midfield and may suddenly be getting to grips with the Premier League.
The team do seem more defensively stable at the back, and confidence is slowly returning to the team.
There was some bad news last night as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain went off injured in the first half with a suspected hamstring injury, which could force him out for the rest of the season. Oxlade-Chamberlain has been in excellent form since moving to wing back and his loss is a major disappointment.
Wenger said that it was more “tight” than anything and he was able to walk so hopefully it may not be too bad.
Alexis Sanchez worth
It’s an interesting one, but for a player who has scored 20 league goals now this season, which has not been seen since Robin van Persie in 2011/12, you have to think that maybe Sanchez is very much worth the £300,000 a week wages he is holding out for.
The question for me is ‘would he get into every other top team in Europe’ and the answer is yes. He is a world class player and surely, as a club, we should be looking to keep him and pay him what he is worth.
I have been disappointed and frustrated with him at times this season, but if he is scoring like he is and not happy, imagine what he can do when he’s smiling and loving life.
According to his latest interview, Mesut Ozil is happy in London and playing for Arsenal. Ozil claimed he is comfortable at the club and happy, and has reiterated that contract talks will continue in the summer. Ozil did tot up another assist last night for Alexis Sanchez’s opener.
The first half was not his strongest but the second half was very good for Aaron Ramsey. His ability to run from deep and attack has been excellent of late and it’s no coincidence that the change of formation has suited the Welshman.
New transfer target
Arsenal are targeting Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar, in a bid to improve the side in the summer. The 21-year-old has been in sensational form this season especially in the French side’s run to the Champions League semi-final. Lemar would cost in excess of £25m but would be seen as a great signing for the club.
Next up for Arsenal is a tricky match away from home against Stoke City. Another three points is a must this weekend.
