Arsene Wenger has been urged to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema to give Arsenal a realistic chance of winning the Premier League.
The Gunners are top of the table but rely heavily on lone frontman Olivier Giroud to lead the line.
And if the France ace was to lose form, run out of steam or get injured, Wenger’s outfit would struggle up top.
That’s why Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has told Wenger he could lead his charges to the win the top-flight title if they recruited Benzema.
Shearer said: “I tend to stay with what I said earlier in the season that, up to now, I don’t think Arsenal will win it, but if they went out and made a big statement come January and were to get someone like Benzema and carried on the form it could be different.
“They have had a fantastic start, you can’t deny that, but if you were to give them a world class centre-forward like Benzema then people might have to start revising their opinion.”
Meanwhile, former Gunners defender Nigel Winterburn says Wenger will definitely capture a top class striker in the transfer window.
He said: “We know Arsenal tried to get Demba Ba before they signed Mesut Ozil. Wenger must have realised he needed another forward.
“When you look at it in the cold light of day – they got caught out. Maybe they felt they could bring in a forward and it didn’t work for them. When you look at it now, Giroud has to stay fit until January. I can’t see any way that they won’t sign somebody else, whether that’s on loan or permanently, in January. Wenger will have to do that.”
