The Loan Report: Loan Spells Come To An End

Wojciech Szczesny – Roma
In the penultimate Serie A game of the season, despite his team running to a 5-3 win in the second half, Szczesny could’ve performed better to keep the scoreline down with a couple of the goals. Sadly for Woj, the win wasn’t enough to keep the pressure on now-champions Juventus, who are 4 points clear with a game to go.
Calum Chambers – Middlesbrough
As everyone probably knows by now, Chambers couldn’t help Arsenal out as his Middlesbrough side leaked three goals away to Liverpool, which saw the Merseyside team clinch the final European spot. In his 24 games out on loan Chambers scored once and assisted once. Also, he played more as a centre-back rather than a right back this year, seeing him make an average of two tackles a game, so it looks like we’ll be seeing him playing more centrally when he returns.
Kelechi Nwkali – MVV Maastricht
The 18-year-old helped his side over the two legs of their Dutch Nacompetitie semi-final games against Cambuur. In the first leg, it only took him eight minutes to score with a well-controlled half volley but that game finished 1-1. However, the second leg saw MVV Maastricht secure their place in the final round against Roda, as they won 2-1, with Nwakali assisting once.
Ismael Bennacer – Tours
Bennacer ended his loan spell at Tours playing 74 minutes in a 3-2 loss to Ajaccio. The Algerian stepped out for the Ligue 2 side a total of 16 times, scoring once since moving in January. The 19-year-old has also spoken about his wishes to go out on loan again next season in search of first-team football, rather than playing in our under 23’s.
Jon Toral – Rangers
Yet another loan spell came to an end, this time in the shape of midfielder Jon Toral at Rangers. The Spaniard played 75 minutes and scored after a good run from Tavernier in their 2-1 win against St. Johnstone. Toral spent the first half of the season on loan at Granada where he made five appearances but spent the second half at Rangers where he scored four times in 15 games.
Takuma Asano – Stuttgart
Yet again Asano failed to get minutes this week in Stuttgart’s 4-1 win against Wurzburger Kickers. However, over the course of the season, he made 27 appearances, scoring and assisting four times each, helping Stuttgart to win the Bundesliga II.
