Arsenal will welcome Liverpool to the Emirates for a 4pm kick-off on Sunday, August 14 which can be viewed on Sky Sports 1 as part of Super Sunday.
With several feasible challengers for the title this season a good start to the campaign is important for both sides, in what pundits believe could be the closest title race for years.
Both sides have significant injury concerns and Wenger does not have a fully-fit defender to call upon. It seems likely that Laurent Koscielny will be rushed back into action to deal with a Liverpool side that has had a great pre-season start, culminating in a 4-0 thrashing of Barcelona.
Liverpool look nearly as light as Arsenal in defensive areas so we may have a contender for game of the season inside the opening week, if the respective attacks take advantage of weakened defences.
Wenger is clearly relishing the challenges and opportunities for the new season, recently commenting:
“Everybody’s ambitious – never has the Premier League been gifted with so many ambitious people or clubs at the start of the season.
“We have Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, Antonio Conte at Chelsea, Pep Guardiola at Man City and Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, so it’s a little bit a world championship of managers as well.”
Klopp has remained tight lipped about his intentions for the opening match against Arsenal:
“I never in my life made a decision about the line-up one week before the game because experience teaches you that everything can happen.
“We will have 11 very good players on the pitch against Arsenal and we will have a very strong bench, I’m really sure. But at this moment I have no idea who is where.”
Likely starting line ups:
Arsenal XI: Cech, Bellerin, Chambers, Koscielny, Monreal, Xhaka, Coquelin, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey, Iwob and Sanchez.
Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Clyne, Lovren, Matip, Milner, Lallana, Can, Henderson, Mane, Firmino and Coutinho.
