Arsenal’s Premier League kick-off has been thrown into chaos with the news that Mikel Arteta is set to miss the first six weeks of the season through injury.
Influential Gunners midfielder Arteta will be sidelined after suffering a torn thigh muscle in training today, reports claim.
Emirates boss Arsene Wenger is said to have disclosed that the Spanish star had a scan after picking up the injury, which is a massive blow to Wenger and his desire to get off to a winning top flight start against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Wenger has so far failed to spend any of the £100million transfer kitty he has at his disposal and the lack of strength in depth could come back to haunt the Frenchman.
In a summer in which pundits and fans alike expected a clutch of big name arrivals in north London, Wenger has failed to secure a single significant signing.
Now it seems that Arteta will miss the crucial Champions League qualification tie against Fenerbahce as well as vital Premier League clashes.
Wenger is already without Thomas Vermaelen, Nacho Monreal and Abou Diaby for the start of the new campaign while Bacary Sagna also faces a race against time to be fit for the Villa encounter after suffering an ankle knock during international duty for France.
