Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Calum Chambers is very close to making a comeback after missing over 11 months due to injury.

The 25-year-old ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the final game of last year against Chelsea. He had to undergo surgery and has spent almost an entire year on the sidelines.

Chambers has played a couple of games for Arsenal’s under-23’s in the Premier League 2 over the last few weeks. He has had no set-backs and it looks like he will be back in action in the very near future.

Arteta is really excited to have Chambers back. The Gunners boss has claimed that the former Saints man is ‘evolving really well’, and has called him a ‘really helpful’ player to have in the squad because of his versatility.

Arteta: Chambers is very close to a return

He told “He’s evolving really well. He’s played some minutes with the under-23s in recent weeks. It’s been a long injury and you know that injuries like that take a long time to get your body, your biomechanics completely natural to compete. But I will say that now he’s very close to returning to play.”

“He got injured against Chelsea if I remember correctly and he was starting the game. He was having a really good time. I think his performances were much more stable, he was growing in confidence, he matured a lot from his spells on loan at different clubs as well.”

“He’s also a fantastic character. He went through the injury in an incredible way, everyone that’s involved with him during the rehab, during training, says incredible things about him. He’s such a nice guy, a great character to have around, and is a player we can utilise in different positions which is really helpful as well for any squad. We want to have him back and I think he’s very close.”

Chambers looked very good for us before he got injured at the end of last season. The Englishman can play as a centre-half, at right full-back and also in defensive midfield. His return will give Arteta a ton of options and that is always a good thing for a manager.

Chambers, still only 25, can be a really important player for us. Injuries haven’t been kind to him, but if he can stay fit, he will be a regular for Arsenal in all competitions for the best part of the next decade.
