Jose Mourinho has admitted Arsenal are Premier League title contenders with club record signing Mesut Ozil in their ranks.
And the Chelsea manager says he put a stop to Demba Ba’s switch to Arsenal because the Gunners snapped up the Real Madrid star for £42.4million on transfer deadline day.
Blues manager Mourinho knows just how exceptional the Germany playmaker is having worked with him for three years during his reign at the Bernabeu.
And the prospect of Ozil teaming up with Ba meant the StamfordBridge boss pulled the plug on a deal to allow Ba to join the Emirates outfit.
Mourinho said: “Ozil is unique. There is no copy of him – not even a bad one. He is the best number 10 in the world. He makes things very easy for me and for his team-mates with his football vision and the decisions he makes.
“Everyone loves him and sees a bit of Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane in him. We didn’t accept Arsenal’s offer for Demba Ba because the signing of Ozil makes them title contenders.”
Chelsea’s refusal to sanction Ba’s switch to north London means Wenger must make do with just Olivier Giroud as his only recognised striker.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy tried to block Arsenal recruiting Ozil on transfer deadline day.
Levy was said to be shocked to learn the Galactico was on his way to the Gunners after being told he was not for sale by Madrid.
Spurs had reportedly asked about the availability of Ozil in the summer during talks over the £86m transfer of Gareth Bale.
