FA Cup winners 2017
The impossible happened and Arsenal pulled off a shock 2-1 win after an impressive performance against an under par Chelsea team.
Much was made of the makeshift defence, Per Mertesacker making his first start in a year and David Ospina preferred in goal, but it was a fantastic team display.
Ospina made some good saves and apart from a couple of moments he did well, Mertesacker was a colossus in defence alongside Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding who is fast becoming a bargain at just £2m. The wingbacks of Hector Bellerin and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played well and got forward. The midfield of Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey knew when to push forward and when to sit. Of course, Ramsey scored the winning goal with a beautifully timed run. Mesut Ozil was excellent although was guilty of perhaps not making the game safe with some great chances. Alexis Sanchez was immense and did not stop running and scored the early goal to set Arsenal on their way, and the ever willing Danny Welbeck up front, whose tiresome running ensured Arsenal could close down Chelsea from the front.
The sending off of Victor Moses came at a time when Chelsea were coming back into the game, but the referee made the correct call. But what a match, what a result and finally a performance to be proud of. Each one of the players deserves huge credit for how they played and how they made Chelsea look ordinary. FA Cup winners 2017, let’s just let that sink in a little.
It seems Wednesday is the day that we find out if manager Arsene Wenger will be staying at the club for a further two years. Whatever frustration the fans have had, Wenger has delivered again with another trophy. Yes, he makes strange decisions and certainly I would like to see a change to the backroom staff, but if Wenger signs for another two years let’s all get behind the team.
We do need to see an improvement in the league and some new players coming in, and after that Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez display, these players have to be signed to new contracts. What’s for sure is Wenger got everything right for the FA Cup final win.
Disappointed goalkeeper Petr Cech deserves credit for his professionalism after the final whistle as he ran straight to the keeper that replaced him and celebrated the win. Ospina made the most of his opportunity and made some excellent saves when Arsenal needed him.
Alexis Sanchez future is still up in the air after he was confused with a reporter’s question about the first goal and replied he does not know and his agent will be speaking soon. After his performance not only in the FA Cup win but for the whole season, the club should be paying the forward what he wants.
