Report: Roma interested in signing 'phenomenal' Arsenal man, Mourinho wants ace

AS Roma are interested in signing Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka this summer’s transfer window.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Italian outfit’s new boss Jose Mourinho wants to sign the Switzerland international this summer.

It’s not the first time reports have emerged over the future of the midfield enforcer. The Athletic claimed there was fears Swiss ace, alongside Bernd Leno, could force a move away this summer.

Xhaka has enjoyed a brilliant personal season with the Gunners and was named in the CIES Football Observatory’s 2020/21 Premier League Team of the Season.

He was lauded by manager Mikel Arteta, who labelled the defensive midfielder a ‘phenomenal’ player back in January.

However, he has endured a less than amicable relationship with the north London faithful during his time at the club.

The ace was famously booed after being substituted during the 2-2 home draw to Crystal Palace last term. Xhaka reacted furiously by taking off his shirt and throwing it down to the ground before storming down the tunnel.

Focal point: Xhaka has become Arsenal’s main man

Amid the chaos of the 2020/2021 season, one thing has become apparent.

Xhaka has become the side’s main man, especially in the absence of anything resembling consistency from most of the senior players.

Willian has endured a torrid debut season and could be on the way out, whilst Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette have been inconsistent all-year long.

However, it’s the Swiss man whose been the focal point especially in getting the side firing in attack.

None of Mikel Arteta’s men completed more passes than the former Basel man (1974). And of those 1974 passes, 268 of them were into the final third, a Premier League high.

Xhaka is important to this Arsenal team amidst reports of a transfer to Roma. Selling him would be disastrous especially due to the gaping hole it would leave in the Gunners’ midfield.
