Wenger ‘agrees fee’ for Giroud

ARSENE Wenger is said to have agreed a fee of almost £13million to take Olivier Giroud to Arsenal from Montpellier, reports tonight suggest.

There is a vast amount of conjecture swirling around that Giroud joining the Gunners could be part of a deal that sees Marouane Chamakh head the other way either on loan or as part of a swap-deal plus cash.

I would be inclined to believe that Chamakh will remain at the Emirates because both the player and the manager intimated as much as last season came to a close.

But it seems that France striker Giroud, 25, who has a chance of facing England tomorrow night in the opening match of Group D Euro2012, one way or another could well be heading to north London.

Al Jazeera first reported that Arsenal have agreed upon a fee with Ligue 1 Montpellier that would bring Giroud to the Emirates next season and the story has gathered momentum as the night progresses.

Giroud, who was top of the Ligue 1 scoring chart with 21 goals last term, has long been touted as a Wenger target with former Gunner and now scout Gilles Grimandi being tasked to follow the striker’s progress and report directly to Wenger.

Chelsea were also said to be in the mix and talking with Montpellier president Louis Nicollin about a possible deal with Romelu Lukaku being offered as a possible makeweight to seal a move. QPR, too, have been reportedly keen on his services.

Nicollin has said he rated Giroud at £50million but the player has a £12.8m release clause in his contract.

We’ll strive to bring you more news as it breaks.

  1. wenger need to get the guy as soon as possible

  2. I have to admit first that I don’t know much about Giroud, but I’m excited to see us get a French player who plays for his national team. Just give us two more major signings and I’m happy!

  3. Arsenal sounds promisin this time around..Prof. WENGER get the boy on the plane (down to the EMIRATES STADIUM  ) asap ….!!!!!

  4. Is this a middle of the road signing or top notch ?  I tend to use the yardstick as if Chelsea, United and City are prepared to let him go by then he is probably not worth bothering with, I note there are rather alot of loan deals involving him in his short career to date, where he has not been getting playing time, is it a potential wenger turd to diamond ? watch this space !  expensive gamble !

  5. If the story is true this is a great signing for the gunners, Giroud is a very strong player, now Wenger needs to concentrate on a defensive player and a centre and the GUNNERS are back in action, we would be sure to win silverware this season…. Lets all hope this is enough to keep RVP at the club…….

  6. I would be happy with him signing. And if it is a replacement for RVP, then so be it. RVP has shown when fit how good he is. But lets not forget a striker is only as good as the service he receives. You put another top international striker in our team and they will score goals too. And also, loads of Arsenal fans wanted us to sell RVP 2 years ago when he was injured most of the time. Now those fans are saying we fucked up by not tieing him down long term. If he chooses to go, no problem. I will always want players who want to play for the club, anyone else can jog on.
