According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal are now prepared to offer a fringe player like Reiss Nelson plus cash to sign Leicester City star James Maddison in the coming weeks.
Mikel Arteta was desperate to sign Martin Odegaard this summer, but that deal looks impossible now. The Norwegian is set to stay at Real Madrid and as a result, the Arsenal boss has turned his attention to Maddison.
The 24-year-old has been one of Leicester’s best players ever since he joined them. He is an integral part of Brendan Rodgers’ side and he still has three years left on his contract. That puts the Foxes in a really strong position, but Arsenal reportedly believe that there is a deal to be done.
Arsenal are ready to offer Reiss Nelson plus cash for James Maddison
The report hints that Arsenal are looking to offer £50 million for Maddison, but that will not be enough. As a result, the Gunners are ready to add someone like Nelson into the deal to convince the Foxes to let go of their number 10.
The 21-year-old has entered the final two years of his contract and Arsenal need to make a decision. It is looking very likely that his future lies away from the Emirates, and a move to Leicester, who are looking for a wide player, could just work out for him.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles is another player Arsenal could be willing to include in the deal if Leicester don’t fancy Nelson, claims the report. The Englishman is also expected to be sold this summer, and he too would be a decent signing for the Foxes if a deal can be struck.
The Insider’s View:
Swap deals in the Premier League are extremely rare when compared to the moves that happen in other countries. That could well change this summer and Edu is absolutely right to try his luck.
Maddison, labelled as ‘incredible‘ by Brentford boss Thomas Frank, will certainly cost a fortune and not many people expect Arsenal to afford him. An offer of £50 million-plus one of Nelson or Maitland-Niles or even potentially Eddie Nketiah makes a lot of sense this summer.
However, it is unclear if Leicester would be willing to entertain any such offer. Nelson would be a decent fit on the wings for them and Arsenal’s potential cash-plus-player offer is arguably a fair one, but it won’t be a surprise to see the Foxes turn that down this summer.
