Arsenal have reportedly suffered a blow in the race for Houssem Aouar as north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have more resources to sign the Lyon midfielder.
According to Le 10 Sport, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side can offer the Ligue 1 side what they want for Aouar this summer.
The same outlet reported earlier in the month that Arsenal had a €20m (£17m) offer rejected for the 23-year-old. Lyon are open to selling this summer Aouar for €25m (£21m).
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Aouar for over 12 months. Mikel Arteta and Edu are admirers of the creative midfielder.
And with Emile Smith Rowe the only natural playmaker in the squad heading into the new season, there is a vacancy for the Frenchman in the side.
Indeed, a quick scroll through social media will also show that Arsenal fans are keen on the club signing Aouar.
Yet if they were to miss out on the Lyon youngster to Tottenham, it would be a transfer that might shatter trust supporters in Arteta and Edu.
Insider View: Arsenal have to win race for Aouar
Arsenal’s need to sign a creative midfielder has been somewhat underestimated this summer. And the Gunners risk running into problems they experienced last season if they do not address this major issue.
Indeed, before Smith Rowe came into the side, Arsenal were sitting as low as 15th in the Premier League table.
Had Arteta not brought in the playmaker and signed Martin Odegaard, it is difficult to comprehend where the Gunners would have ended in the standings.
And that is why Arsenal simply have to win the race for Aouar this summer.
The Gunners need creativity in the squad more than any other position or role. And in Aouar they will have a player who can fill this much-needed void in the side.
