Report: Arsenal target to leave European giants for free next summer

Arsenal target Andre Onana will depart Ajax next summer if no suitable offers are made during the winter transfer window.

According to Goal, the Eredivisie giants are keen to receive some sort of fee for their star goalkeeper. Onana has been unable to play football this year due to a ban from UEFA for taking an illegal substance.

Indeed, the FC Barcelona academy product has been a target for Arsenal during the summer. However, Inter Milan now look like the favourites to sign the 25-year-old shot-stopper in the coming months.

Scotland 1-0 Moldova: Billy Gilmour shines again but questions remain ahead of Vienna trip

Arsenal went big on Aaron Ramsdale in August. The Gunners paid a reported fee of £24m according to the Athletic which could rise as high as £30m if certain clauses are met.

Supporters were desperate for the club to sign Onana. The keeper was available this window for as cheap as £5m according to reports.

However, Mikel Arteta instead pushed to sign Ramsdale. The keeper is yet to make an appearance in the Premier League after arriving from Sheffield United.

Insider’s View: Arsenal could rue not going for Onana over Ramsdale

Of all the signings Arsenal made in the summer, Ramsdale has been the most controversial and most scrutinised so far.

The England international has suffered back-to-back relegations with both AFC Bournemouth and Sheffield in the past two Premier League seasons. And his hefty price tag has raised question marks over whether or not he will be worth the value for Arsenal.

Indeed, with Onana a UEFA Champions League-level shot-stopper and a player who could have been signed for a sixth of what Ramsdale could eventually cost, it is easy to understand why Arsenal fans are asking questions.

And with Inter now in the lead to sign Onana, Arsenal could curse themselves for not going after the Cameroonian international when the perfect opportunity was there to sign him.
