Arsene Wenger is keeping tabs on Napoli enforcer Gokhan Inler and may be considering a £13million move for the Swiss international in the January transfer window.
Gunners boss Wenger was said to be tempted to make a bid for Inler when he was at Udinese – but the schemer switched to Napoli and was in the side that lost 2-0 in Champions League earlier this season.
French football circles are awash with a rumour that Wenger has set his sights on recruiting Inler to the Emirates but Galatasaray, where Roberto Mancini is the boss, are also keen on his services.
Wenger been delighted with Mathieu Flamini’s tough-tackling displays in the Gunners midfield this season and sees Inler as back-up should he or Mikel Arteta get injured.
Meanwhile, defender Per Mertesacker has been speaking ahead of the Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.
He said: “It is difficult to play Dortmund, especially away from home, but we have to keep our confidence. We are on a high level. We are top of the Premier League.
“We try to gain confidence and we need to get a good result over there. But we are relaxed. We did show already in the Premier League that we are one of the best teams.
“It is a little bit different in the Champions League, though, and we need a result there to stay in line for qualification.”
