‘Yes, they are interested’: Agent for Arsenal target confirms he is in talks with another club

Arsenal could miss out on Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana following an update from the player’s agent.

Speaking to Voetbal Primeur, Albert Botines, Onana’s representative, confirmed that the Cameroonian international is in talks with Lyon. The football agent said when asked about recent rumours linking the Ajax star to the Ligue 1 side: “Yes, they are interested. The clubs are in talks.”

Arsenal had once looked like nailed-on favourites to sign Onana from Ajax as reported by Goal. However, the Gunners appear to have fallen in the race to sign the 25-year-old. Onana is likely to leave Ajax this summer.

Arsenal look set to miss out on Onana

A goalkeeper is on Mikel Arteta’s agenda this summer. The future of Bernd Leno is currently up in the air. The German star has just two years left on his current deal. And a new contract is unlikely to be put on the table anytime soon.

The Gunners have tied down Arthur Okonkwo to a new long-term deal, though. However, the teenager is yet to play a single minute of first-team football for Arsenal despite his promotion to the first-team this summer.

Insider View:

Onana is, to simply put it, the beat goalkeeping option Arsenal can sign this summer. The former FC Barcelona keeper has experience both domestically and continental, and he is also available at a low price.

As per the Goal report, Ajax are looking to sell Onana this summer for as little as £7m. And for a quality shot-stopper who is relatively young and has played multiple seasons in the UEFA Champions League, the Cameroonian international is a bargain for any club that signs him.

And Arsenal have to ensure they’re that club this summer. With Leno’s future at risk and the club’s backup keeper next season likely to be a teenager with zero first-team minutes, a goalkeeper should be a priority this window. And Onana is too perfect for the Gunners to let him slip through their fingers.
